I think this change has started the boulder down the slippery slope of Facebookification. Actually, it started with replacing Thanks with Like. I want Thanks back; I want Like and Rate gone. It was a simple system that worked--was positive in nature.

While i agree with the Thanks VS Like, i think it's a bit early to go that route since this new system is literally a few hours old.

How about we have this tested for ... say ... 2 weeks or so and then decide whether or not it should be canceled / approved?

These new badges are kind of funky. Is there a breakdown anywhere that details how one achieves these badges? or is it down to how many posts we have in one subsection? Because if that's the case, I would like a badge called 'Lounge Monkey' because I spend a lot of time in the lounge sub forum.
Based on how many likes you have in the field

::EDIT::

Are these badges also to show that we know what we are talking about when it comes to a certain topic?? be it VGA Bios's, Motherboards or Overclocking?? Cuz im an expert in every one. Since it seems to be a ranked thing, Im guessing it is also some sort of accreditation or 'certification' as if it were that we are knowledgeable in that field to a certain degree.
W1zzard initially had to base it on likes in sub forums. It is a dynamic feature though and changes with contribution. Eventually it will be based on post ratings (which you can see he started), and then will actually show yours and others’ expertise in different areas.

Yeah, I estimate that the like system will be retired ultimately
I disagree with this. Very helpful for telling someone that you agree with them, Thank them for their input or indeed like their post because it shows who's giving the like. This +1,+2,+3 only shows that someone upvoted you without any input as to whom.

Going to have to agree with an earlier statement that was made concerning the downvotes. It does kind of create a bit of negativity. Might be better if they're hidden. EDIT; Just the negatives/downvotes hidden. The positives/upvotes should still be shown.

Ok, now I get it how the new tags work. Depending in which section of forum you got the likes, they count towards your "expertise" level.

it's not section based. it's based on tags that get applied to individual threads

Or that. Because my "expertise" tags basically display what I usually engage in the most. Quite like it actually. This way anyone can see what each user is engaged in the most and probably also the most experienced with. I don't remember seeing anything like this anywhere so far. Really cool idea W1z!

Same here
I reply usualy where i feel i can give a reasonable Answer
Often its not "Expertise" but common Sense that one supplies to thread answers ( sometimes this seems to be lacking in lots of replys :()

I mean, these new tags under each user gives the reader an approximate idea how "expert" user saying something is on the given matter. So, if it says "Security:Master" under my posts, it gives those who are reading a rough idea that I may know a thing or two about security, but if I'm talking about overclocking and I don't have the tag, it means I probably don't know all that much on the matter. It's not a definitive thing, but I think it can help people shape a better opinion whose reply or post makes the most sense and whose is probably just a guess. I really like the idea of this system. It's interesting I haven't seen it anywhere till now and I visit tons of forums.

Mine says motherboard master, and I have no idea why lol I mean I know the basics, but I don't know how to create my own mobo BIOS or anything, so not sure I would call myself a master. I'll take it though, it looks neat lol

if anything, mine should say Internet Speed Master - see sig, lol

You probably hang the most in discussions on motherboards I guess :D It's interesting I don't have anything on Graphic Cards, Soundcards or Motherboards though. I talk about that stuff quite a lot.

That's the thing, it's not about the posting alone per se, it's about what you said that helped/clarified someone and that person decided that you should be rewarded in some way.
If you are rewarded often, then it should be a signal that you are in fact a valuable member in that field. And the badge pops-up.

However, the concern of users paying more attention to badge owners vs. non-badged shouldn't be one to begin with. It's up to the user to decide what opinion to hang on, which is something no one controls, and it is up to the community to leverage the useful help/input on a thread, oblivious of titles owned. Simple.
Acting like this also filters out the vitriol.

I don't think i've even created a sound card tag yet. Motherboards I've tagged maybe 3 threads.

I'll start working on some analysis options for people to figure out why they got those ranks

@up Nice. Now I get where I stand :)
A question : So, if system is based on tags, how wide range threads stack up ?
Example : Old Hardware thread - LINK ?
or
Xeon owners club - LINK.
Does liked posts in those count in only one tag "CPU", "Intel", "AMD", "Motherboards", or all of them ?

PS. Help page (or a post) with basic info on this would be nice. What given badge means, how many levels are there, etc.

Looks interesting.

A small suggestion: just because someone has within the top of good contributions in a particular section doesn't necessarily mean he / she is very knowledgeable of the subject. As such, add a condition like ... say ... @ least +100 to be eligeable (meaning, @ the time i'm writing this, only the gaming and graphics categories would have "experts", "champions" and such). As time goes on, this +100 figure may need revision: after all, this system is barely 1 day old.

Also, on a personal note: i'm in the AMD's processors section (dead last)? How the hell did that happen?

at the moment it counts for each of them, which means threads with more tags give out a higher sum of points.

Neither of the two threads you listed is tagged, btw

Also, on a personal note: i'm in the AMD's processors section (dead last)? How the hell did that happen?
If you don't make the list, your own score will be displayed at the end of the list as additional entry, so you know where you stand
