Microsoft Studios' latest entry to the Forza racing series, Forza Horizon 4, launches on PC and XBOX October 2, 2018. In a nice change of pace from the norm these days, a free demo has been released for trial on both platforms. Those interested will have to navigate the Microsoft store, however, as this will join the other Microsoft exclusives in only being available for purchase there and nowhere else. Initial impressions of the demo are positive from media outlets in general, although there were also videos out that showed the game still has random bugs a few weeks out from launch. PC Gamer also shares more details on the demo, and the game alike, which is worth a read if you are a fan of the series.

The demo also included an benchmark mode that offers useful information beyond just an average FPS number. Indeed, we see also a timeline on how the CPU and GPU fared throughout the length of the benchmark, a stutter count, whether the GPU was in a limiting situation or not, and how far off the achieved frame rate was compared to the target number (which can be left unlocked). Initial results from MotoGamesTV on YouTube show an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 and AMD Ryzen 7 2700X-based system netting an average of 57 FPS at 4K under Ultra settings, with a similar system netting over 75 FPS in Forza Motorsports 7 from last year. The demo is impressive looking on PC, and we remain curious if a driver update will help gain more performance.

It shows 2x MSAA enabled at 4K along with the demanding ultra settings for geometry and shadows. Seems pretty good for 4K.

I enjoyed FH3 once they fixed some of the issues but I still have a weird memory bug where I lose about 10fps after my 970's VRAM fills up the last .5GB slower part and then dumps it to go back to under 3.5GB.

Wot? Trolling? By fiasco do you mean the slower section that was falsely advertised? Where all us buyers assumed there was a full 4GB of VRAM running at rated speed, not just some of it? Yeah I know about it all too well..they rejected me my $30...bastards..
The memory thing only happens in FH3, my other games fill it up and dump but don't permanently lose 10fps once it dumps that slower section.

Search in google Forza Horizon 3 memory leak, gg

pointing out a minor error: it's Forza* Motorsports 7.

Played the demo yesterday right after I saw it went live via Microsoft Store. Have to say, leaving the graphics settings to Auto (which is around Medium-High) yields a very stable 60fps, with very small, to barely noticable stuttering.

not using more than 3.5GB VRAM; ok. Filling all 3.5; still ok. Going past 3.5: uh-oh. Going past that + filling the slower 512MB "reserve": gg. Yea...

Ah, I am not sure how that typo even happened. Thanks for letting me know, I have corrected it.

And ppl kept saying it won't affect thing. And here we are, just 2 generations later.

Another one in the long list of 'told you so' statements :) Yup. I mean, it was super obvious to begin with. 'But games never use 4 GB anyway and if they do, your card is obsolete anyway because crap performance'... oh really? :p

Compared to FH3 the performance is better and it looks better , which surprised me .

Definitely a slicker experience than FH3, judging by the demo and to be honest, it's one of the best demos I've ever played.

Performance seemed pretty good to me. Kinda annoying that you have to manually max out the settings.

for Microsoft x Playground Games to put FH4 Demo out into the open via the Microsoft Store app is pretty ballsy & showing us how confident their "demo" game is. First time I've seen a demo that doesn't disappoint. Kudos to those guys for leaving us a good impression of the game.

The optimisation definitely feels more refined than FH3 and lets hope the load times in the actual game will have improved.
Actually, it's the best looking game I've ever seen.

With tons of positive reviews of the demo game from so many outlets, its safe to say FH4 delivers that promise well. In one of the youtube vids, Digital Foundry pointed out the reason why FH3 didn't get any significant optimizations like FH4 was due to outsourced codes being implemented instead of Playground Games doing the work, hence the horrible memory leaks on the PC & very late optimizations on XB1X.

I just can't trust them. I'm sure it's going to not be so much a racing game as a DLC / microtransaction template that also lets you drive cars.

They just announced they're getting rid of their loot box schemes in Forza 7 (update due sometime in Winter, I think). I don't know why they'd instantly go back here.

I just hope they don't screw this one up as badly as Forza 7 - which is still giving me grief on my xbox one.
