Edit: THANKS EVERYONE. I WENT WITH AN X58 MB/i7-920/6gb Ram FROM @Jetster ... I PLAN TO BUY A 6c/12t X5670 ON EBAY. SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND! ;)

Looking to up my crunching game. My 24/7 ATX cruncher is a measly 4 core/4t Xeon x5470 at 4Ghz In an ASUS P5Q-deluxe. I WANT MORE CORES!

Anyone got a used single or multi CPU MB that'll support 6 or 8 core Xeons on the cheap? If it comes with CPU(s) all the better. Would prefer ATX form factor so I can slip it into the case I'm already using.

I just missed out on two great deals here for Xeon/MB combos.

There is 1 atx 2011 board afaik that even exists if you need modern crunching power. You can throw together a dual node quanta board for cheap, or pay the atx tax. I just put together two e5 2640's and two e5 2660's for $520.

Im in the process of upgrading my WCG setup as well- definitely look at 2011-3 Xeon ES on eBay. For about $300-$375 you can get a 14c/28t highly efficient Haswell/Broadwell-E chip that turbo boosts at 100% load across all cores to about 2.2-2.6ghz.

That's
moar coars :D

I have 3 boards but only one is ATX - X9DAL-3F. PM me. One is EATX with a 2687w v1 ES. The other is EEB form factor.

I thought the P5Q supported hex core chips?

If so, I've got a couple of x5650's that I'd shoot ya for $55 shipped. I think that one of them might possibly be bunk, but I know one works great.

Isn't the P5Q LGA775 where the x5650 is LGA1366?

I have: Evga X58 Sli3, x5650, 6gb Patriot 1600 - got everything except the cpu here on TPU for the combo, would be nice to see TPU keep it. :)

Technically, it only supports 775 consumer chips, the X5470 is only through a socket mod and a trace sticker on the CPU contacts, which I did, and it really does work. No clue if HEX cores are supported.

If you're interested in the P5Q and/or the X5470 (+8Gb DDR2), I'm willing to trade that & add $ as well.

If you're going to offer trade goods you must also supply images of them.

X99 motherboard isn't that expensive nowadays. It's as much as a Z270 mobo.

Asrock mobo is known to work with all ES chips. I cannot vouch for others when it comes to ES v4. ES v3 works with virtually all X99 though.

I'd like to know myself. I've run out of cores, I need more, but horribly poor! x99 is stupid expensive for what it is. I'd kill for a cheap used 8 core and mobo....

By using NCIX outlet (2nd hand items or returned items) or Newegg refurb center, I am able to source a X99 mobo at 150 ~ 200 CAD. That's like 110 ~ 150 USD.

Coupled with the Xeon ES I linked, you get CPU (12 cores) and its mobo for around 300 USD. That's inexpensive for what you get.
Additionally, HEDT (X59, X79, X99 etc) motherboards age well and don't go down in price. Sometimes, it goes up. So, it's sort of investment.

You're probably right. x99 will be my next platform. I just need to find a used 8c/16t cpu that won't put me in the poor house for years... arg!
And of course I'd prefer a xeon....

Ebay is a must if you want 10+ core xeons on the cheap.

Haswell-E 14 cores / 28 threads @ 350 USD (OEM, not ES, cinebench score @ 1700) <- this is what I have.

Broadwell-E 12 cores / 28 threads @ 200 USD (ES, cinebenc score @ 1500)

If you go for earlier gen, the CPU gets cheaper but mobo gets pricey.

You have options. You just need to find bargain x99 board which is easy nowadays.

The pain I'm having is figuring out what CPUs work with what motherboards. It's frustating.

@Jetster has and x58 board and 920 cpu for an awesome price. Looks like it'll take a 6 core xeon (can be had for less than $200).

v3 (including ES) will work on all (as in 100%) X99 mobo. Just watch out for an ES chip that is too cheap. It could be a very early ES that is blocked out by BIOS. You don't want an early ES to begin with anyway, especially for crunching.

v4 (including ES) is a little tricky because newer BIOS is required for mobo to recognize it. The Asrock mobo I purchased came with late BIOS that already supports v4.

If you want to be safe, choose v3. v4 is about 10% better than v3.

If a mobo claims it supports i7 6800+ out of box, it will recognize v4.

Ask @cdawall here. He knows his stuff around ES Xeons. I don't recommend going for Xeons that are older than Sandy bridge era. It's okay for gaming but you are crunching. Pure CPU powerwise, there are crystal clear gaps between generations.

FYI,
Sandy bridge xeon has a name like E5-2650.
Ivy bridge has v2 at the end of its name: E5-2650v2
Haswell is v3.
Broadwell is v4.
Skylake is v5. (2011-3 version isn't released yet. Actually, it will probably be on a new socket.).

I think I'm going to jump on Jesters X58 board. It'll support an X5670 6c/12t chip, fetching about $60 on eBay and supposedly does over 4ghz with ease.

Next generation will absolutely be a different socket because they removed FIVR.
