My ASUS ROG STRIX G731GW Gaming Laptop was playing everything fine in Full Ultra for the first 2-3 years, but in recent years I thought there was a problem with the processor and graphics card and tried to fix it by changing a few things myself, but it didn't work. I did everything, changing thermal paste, cleaning, 6-cell batteries were purchased. Even though I upgraded the 32 GB RAM Dual, the problems still continue. I looked and now my graphics card's MHz usage and voltage usage are halved and it drops from 50-60 FPS to 5-10. Even though I turned off Intel Turbo Boost, the problem still persists.

Laptop Specs
CPU: i9-9880H.
GPU: RTX 2070 Mobile
RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz
1TB SSD.

No such thing as a Gaming Laptop anymore, all mobiles thermal throttle.

Use Throttle Stop and reduce either CPU Core or CPU Cache by -125mv
Lower GPU Core frequency too with Nvidia-Inspector since the cooler being used together with CPU
The final objective here is to get decent framerate 30 fps

The OSD shows exactly what is happening, the system thinks it is power limited and thus drops the GPU clocks to compensate. That could be for many reasons - Windows power settings, BIOS update that has different power limits, not being connected to AC power, defective power sensor, the list goes on.

You might want to consider budgeting because the way mobiles are made the gpu is on the same pcb as the cpu. Other than buying the exact same motherboard that you can test in person at a shop without buying it, or getting your existing board repaired which if the gpu die is bad, you will have to procure one, and they aren't cheap. Your options are limited.

You might consider building a desktop or getting a Steamdeck.

You have done what you can.

I don't think the gpu is dead. I think you want to take a really good look at your power settings. Not getting hot enough for thermal throttling, so it is likely artificially power limiting itself somewhere.

Throttlestop is a good start for cpu. Afterburner isn't really for mobile, so it can be a bit tricky for laptops (do not ask Unwinder about it). Since i do not know the state of your system. I recommend a clean windows install (or at least get rid of armoury crate and all the BS asus software), update bios, firmware, drivers, etc. Then get work figuring out what is limiting power. There are other things it could be, of course. It sounds like it has a lot of hard hours on it already. Could be worn out.

You changed the memory before or after performance issues?

I don't have any idea what order you have done things in or when. Your original post doesn't give much info. I really don't start worrying about laptop temps until they get above 90. Power limiting is taking place somewhere.

Where? I don't know without more info. It also has no mention of when you did a windows re-install. no mention of when and in what order your you did all this maintenance (nor do i know if it was done correctly).

Perhaps it doesn't like the memory you added. Perhaps a bios update along the way has placed limits on power and thermals that are different from the originals (not uncommon). Perhaps you did a lousy job re-applying TIM on cooler when you removed it. Perhaps you have fans going out. Perhaps your AC adapter is weaking and isn't providing full power. Perhaps the system is old and worn out (it is a 2019 model). There are lots of possibilities.

I'll leave you to them.

Mobiles lack the cooling that laptops had from 20 years ago, because todays crap are too thin.
