fps incease from 480 to 970?

Can I expect double approx? It seems to look that way from fill rate ect. I'm suffering from sticker shock... 500can to buy this little beast, I'm hoping it makes a giant difference. About 750can for a 980, which is what I wanted, but on a fixed income that's impossible.

Should be double if not more. Depends on the tests. I only found 1 or 2 sites which actually benched the 400s with the 900s or even gave any glimpse at performance expected. My dual 460s hits into 480 level and it showed a good speed up. At least until you run games that push past 3.5GB. Then you'll get the performance hit. But it should still be better than a 480.

Tree fiddy increases.

I went from a GT220 to a GTX660, and from the 660 to a GTX780, and then 780 SLI.

Lemme just say that with every increase besides the SLI, the performance has went up 2-3 fold. The SLI only about doubled the performance.

Think big bump.

Well, 480 doubled should be 960 and still have a little to go to reach the 970.

Not sure if a 960 is double. Dam thing is too crippled. It's why I had to whip out charge card and deal with interest to buy a 970. I really wanted a 980, but 750 up here. Ridiculous.
Besides, I'll get a 2nd 970 used in 6 months to a year, and blow away titanx....

Depends on the app but going from say a 780 to a 980Ti I myself gained a solid 50% with overclocks.

SLI GTX 480s would roughly equal a Stock GTX 780
A Stock GTX 780 is about 17-20% behind the GTX 970 at stock

So in terms of frame rate
If a 480 got 50FPS
A 780 got 100 FPS
A 970 gets 120 FPS

its a rough figure but yes performance will more than double in terms of %
Of course the extra vram, modern architecture etc means in newer games the % gap increases. Example WItcher 3 comes to mind

Iunno what kind of crappy 780 you have as my 780SC came up to par with my friend's Strix 970. Both are overclocked cards to about the same extent.

Try playing Witcher 3 and other more modern titles. the 780 tends to drop back a bit. I also consider minimum FPS. Then again I went from 780 to 980Ti as well. But my card would do 1050 base clock (not boost cant remember what that was for a max)

But yeah. 970 isnt a MASSIVE increase but like i said STOCK vs STOCK, i dont take OC into it because no everyone gets a glowing god sample of amazing proportions.

My 7970 that failed to go over 1050 stable or my 8800GTS 640 come to mind.

2500k that couldnt do anything more than 4.4 stable. Silicon lottery can be good or bad depending on an overclock for performance is well stupid.

OP should get minimum double the FPS.

But hey if the 780 is good enough why by a 970 thats more expensive

I think you failed to see my "Both are overclocked cards to about the same extent."

At stock the cards are more of a 12% difference, not this huge 20% you speak of.

Anyway, off topic, OP go for a 970 and be happy.

12% is the average across all games. Witcher 3 the difference is bigger than 12%. Depends on the Title

Cherry picked benchmarks? sure also depends on how you calculate the percentage.

780 = 106

106 / 138 = .76 x 100 = 76%
138/ 106 = 1.30 x 100 = 130%

A simple flip of numbers aka X is slower than Y or Y is faster than X can make a big difference.

Still as we move on toward newer games the 780 will end up far slower just as the 480 and 580 fall ever further behind today. Its a fact of how architectures evolve.

Again doesn't change the fact he should see about 200-230% performance boost. over what the 480 offers.

We also have to remember Nvidia likes to or at least as of late to sand bag the performance of their older generations to make their newer cards look better. In which case the 480 which is dead in the water becomes severely left behind.

I'm a fan of nabbing older hardware for a really nice price/performance ratio. The 970 is a strong card, but it might be worth it to consider a 680 or 770 as an option as well. Both would drive a 1080p screen well (judging by your system specs).

I would of gone for a 2nd hand, but they seem to be all in the States. The exchange rate makes them as expensive as a brand new card almost.
My new strix 970 shipped today, so I'll be finding out first hand how much it beats my 480! Hopefully down the road I can find a 2nd used one
for a reasonable price.

Does anyone know how high a 970 strix oc will boost to? I actually have no idea what most of the oc settings are or do.... It's stock 1253mhz, whatever that means.
