This game is free on Steam. It looks like a slick, fully developed FPS according to the Steam store page and I was wondering how the developer makes their money on it.

So, I downloaded and ran it, but then Kaspersky complained loudly of sneaky driver installations:

So I aborted it.

I've never seen any other Steam game throw up warnings like this, so I wonder if this game harbours spyware? That would certainly explain their "business model" now, wouldn't it?

Opinions?

My guess is that it is a false positive. Eaglex64.sys is part of AhnLab HackShield to prevent online hacking.

The fact that a friend is playing it is irrelevant to whether it's spyware or not, as he may have missed this completely.

I've also posted this question on the Kaspersky forum and will let you all know how they respond.

It's highly unlikely that Steam would allow a game with a real virus to exist on their service. I think it's a false positive, and I'm sure some other programs install drivers in a similar way.

I'm surprised that the publisher of a F2P game has the money to include a 3rd party anti-hack mechanism.

Yeah, I kinda agree, but I'd rather err on the cautious side and sound it out before running it. It's always just possible that they somehow got this past Steam's vetting process.

I hear ya. Always good to be cautious if you don't find reformatting fun. I know several of the indie games update through themselves and bypass Steam, so you do have a point. :toast:

I didn't trash it. I said uninstall it, for reasons not really specific to this topic. Anyways, it is a false positive. If Kaspersky didn't know what, say "Punkbuster" was it would mark that as suspicious too. I would think you would get better clarification if you contacted Kaspersky support perhaps?

I thought you meant uninstall as in don't use it?

Anyway, I have already made the same exact thread over at their forum, just after TPU, but haven't had a reply yet. Judging by all the responses on here, I'm thinking it's likely a false positive too.

I agree with rhino... forget all these nay sayers. best bet is to do a fresh install. if you keep steam on a seperate drive then wipe that too. If problems continue to exist jst stick with solitaire and peace of mind will be it's own reward.

Edit: Change your fucking quote didn't i tell ya once before!

Epic response...great analogy for false positive situations like this. I completely agree with Erocker and had a good laugh at Easy Rhino's response. In all seriousness though, anti-hacking programs for MMO's over the years have been notorious for causing false positives in various anti-virus programs. Probably has something to do with the way they monitor your system for hacks while running the actual game.

All free games look suspicious to me. On the other hand I had Avast keep telling me a file written by Starcaft 2 onto HDD when loging in was malware so I switched to MSE.
