Fresh NVIDIA AMPERE rumors

Since the beginning of this month Nvidia has been giving out the technical paper work to tech companies about the upcoming Ampere GPU's, they will be receiving the first reference boards and silicon by the end of this month so that they can start designing and testing the next AIB cards for the arch.

Ampere should please just about everybody, some of the big points that we had communicated to us:

• Significant raster performance increases (higher than Turing gains)
• Massive RT performance increases
• Expanded Vram capacity on the full range of SKU's.
• Dialed down TDP's on many cards in the range (high end remains unchanged at 250w)
• Increased core clocks (healthy 100-200MHz bump over Turing)

That ends the good news.

Bad/neutral news:

• Prices, unchanged on the most popular cards, slight decreases on the unpopular ones. (x80ti and x80's will see a price drop, while x70's and beneath will remain UNCHANGED)
• Overclocking, core clocks stock will be higher than ever, 100-200MHz higher depending on SKU, however this does not mean the 2100-2200MHz ambient cooling upper limit of frequency will be broken when overclocking, which brings me to the next point.
• Voltage limits decreased. We went from 1.2v of Maxwell and previous generation to 1.093v in Pascal (maintained in Turing), we will now see a decrease to sub 1v in Ampere, which will severely limit overclocking frequency, but has a positive impact on power consumption's.
• Be aware that no matter how valid this information is today it is subject to change between now and release depending on what Nvidia decide to do, many points are highly sensitive to market forces (Prices, TDP's and vram capacity especially).

Sounds like a simple turing shrink and should be for common sense reasons ,will be interesting to see how the next twelve months shakes out.

Well... we'll see. I mean, that all sounds good. A die shrink, eh? Frankly I don't care about most of it, but if the first three are true and the prices stay the same, that's great. Basically they're saying it's going to be what Turing should've been, and maybe people can finally more than just try RT without spending over $500. But I'd really need to know what the definitions of the words 'significant' and 'massive' are in this context, being that this is nvidia we're talking about here... till then they're just telling people what they want to hear as far as I'm concerned. I dunno... sounds kind of too good to be true... or more it will be what they say it is, but getting what people would want from those things won't be so cut and dry. Getting to a point where RT performance is actually viable this fast would really be something... I think if anybody tried to claim that was going to happen now most would say they were dreaming. I suppose with a node shrink and expansion of the RT section it may be closer to reality... but only time will tell on that.

Better high-refresh/high-res I can sorta see... or at least they better hope it can do that.

I'm just looking at what it implies... as in, what people would think/hope for when they're told "massive RT performance increases" and "significant raster performance increases." If I want to sweat the semantics, I could say the term "significant" is problematically vague. It could be "significant" in a pure numbers sense, but still not allow for the bump in what hardware such and such level card can drive that people might hope for when they hear that. "Significant" in measurement versus "significant" in practice and so on. Either way, you would still want to use the word to suggest a meaningful change... it just leaves that meaning up in the air.

I don't want to sound negative about it. Just not looking to get my hopes up over a rumor with no real concrete info outside of suggesting that yes, Ampere will be a node shrink of Turing.

Looks at my wallet, then over at my GTX 1080 TI that looks back at me with puppy eyes, then looks at my wallet again and while taking credit card up from wallet looks back at GTX 1080 TI while saying these word's: I'm sorry little one.

I sure hope Nvidia's RTX 3000 series card or what name scheme Nvidia will be using lives up to my hope. So I together with my Ryzen 9 3950X can get a proper card for proper 4K gaming.

Dont get me wrong 1080 TI is still a great card, but It just doesn't have the power for 4K resolution and sli is just not what it used to be, so for me the only solution is a more powerful card that can handle 4K at fps above 60 FPS or more.

I will just have to wait and see if ampere can deliver the performance boost over pascal cause I feel rtx 2000 series disappointed in on that fact.

That depends on the games gpu needs and settings. There are apselutely games out there that can bring it down to its knees in 4K at ultra setting. For 4K 60 fps at high settings, you need a rtx 2080 ti at least.

I will say a 1080 TI is better suited for 1440P gaming, where it so also do a great job.

4K Is a gpu hog.

well this is nothing new.more raster and rt performance,more vram,better power efficiency - this is a die shrink and a new series,what else would anyone expect ? we've been on 8gb xx80 cards since 2016.Time to move to +10 and xx50 to 8gb.
I do hope for faster rtx and more classic game remasters cause frankly this is the best thing about the rtx series for me.
