Hey, my friend just text me in a panic saying that his PC has 'died'. He says the lights come on but the fans don't and nothing displays on screen. He also stated that his PC was very warm so naturally I have just assumed that it's overheating and should be fine in the morning. I'm going to see it tomorrow and if the problem is still persisting I will try resetting the CMOS, testing the individual sticks of ram and reseating all the components. Can anybody think of any others reasons that would happen?

His specs for reference:

q6600 @ 3.4ghz 1.4v (1.36 in windows) with freezer 7 pro cooler
MSI P35 Neo2-fr LGA775
6GB RAM (2x1gb + 2x2gb corsair xms2 800mhz)
500GB HDD and 128GB SSD
AMD 6850 1GB
Corsair GS 700W Power Supply

He was very vague as he doesn't know much about pc's so I can't say for sure. Thanks for the suggestion though I will take along a spare power supply.

Yes that would be wise. Please report back what the problem was and if it was psu related or whatever as it is handy for others to know and im quite curious. Thanks :)

Ah rite well probably not the psu but i would still have a look. Do as you said in your op and reseat all components and maybe a good clean out of dust, that can cause all sorts of problems :)

I had a strange issue with this board too, The PSU i used was slightly defective. Also bring a spare video card. be aware this board boots twice, all the 4 LEDS will go green second time it starts, if not all are green (eg: 2 red) then pull the manual and take a look at the error codes.

What kind of DVD drive are you using?? Try unpluging it, mine had an issue with one

Take a buzzer with you, just in case his mobo PC doesn't have one and you need to troubleshoot.

I would:
a. reseat everything (solves like 80% of the problems)
b. test without RAM (to check if the mobo gives the error beep codes)
c. reset CMOS and start with the bare minimum (CPU, 1 stick of RAM) then start to add device by device until you get to the culprit

yeah, that too, might be a DMI issue.

Benchmark Scores 2cm mark on bench with a razor blade.
I'll be pointing to PSU or fried memory controller.
After that it would be RAM which may have been taken out by the fried memory controller/onboard chipset.

The 775skt CPUs themselves rock but the NB/SB cooling on the motherboards shat themselves over the years sadly.
