I usually have my headset plugged in and it sounds crystal clear, but today I decided I wanted to blast some music throughout the house from my speakers, and when I plugged them in the music was fuzzy and distorted, so I rebooted and it was the same deal. I figured it was my speakers because they are old and they have loose cables, so I reconnected my headset and I had the same fuzziness.

Any ideas?

are you using onboard or dedicated sound? i had a problem a long time ago where my sound was all fuzzy, but only when i overclocked my video card. the problem was that when oced, the video card produced so much interference, that my sound card could pick it up. the solution was to move my sound card down a few pci slots.

Component wise wouldn't the mobo only matter, seeing as it has the sound card

Yes, in this situation that should be the only component causing issues, but in rare cases other components may cause issues. It helps us to assist you if you A. List your system specs in first post, or B (better option) fill out System Specs in UserCP.

Verify you have current updates, etc..
Also you didn't designate, are you using the connection at the sound ouput on the MB itself or through the header and at the front of the case? Also when using those connections, they can be worn from use and not completely and cleanly connect after so much use. That's why I A. plug headphones into speaker jack or B. plug headphones into case connection, that is connected via header on MB. That way the sound output connection(s) I use on the motherboard don't get worn down. God knows how many stereo/walkman's (tape/cd) I went through because of this problem..eventually you'll lose one channel, if you adjust it just right you can get it.

But still, verify your drivers...re-install them even. Also, may not be the case, but check for dust buildup in the case, just as good habit, I haven't had any sound issues from this, but since the sound processor uses electricity...it could happen.

Check Device manager in Control Panel > System, verify there's no issues, also make sure to check for any conflicting IQR's.

And I have a question, what did you do/change after your last clean headphone sound output and before the fuzzy headphone sound output?

Depending on how much you use the sound output jack and how many cycles of plug in/take out you've done, it's probably not making full connection, but we'll hope it's software based and simple so we can get you jammin again!
