The number one thing to remember about marketing is that it takes all types. You will reach people on twitter that you will not reach on facebook. You will reach people on facebook that you will not reach through opt in emails.

Simon obviously did some things that were very specific to the enthusiast market and he did them through forums like this. But if he is doing something to reach the broader market, you need other outlets.

I think the issue is with how half arsed it is, out of all the free services on the net, why only choose one?

If this chap was good at his job he'd spend the extra 10 minutes it takes googling a few other places creating an account and copy and pasting the information.


You have the capacity as a company to reach so many people all at once for free, yet choose one medium?

If I had told someone to drum up some sales and they came back to me with " oh I set up this thing on twitter" I'd tell them they're not getting paid for that week and to come back when they've actually done their job

Very well put. AMD marketing is kinda shoddy at best.

I have no idea about how all of this worked, that is a question for simon. My only point is that via twitter and facebook he'll hit millions of users.

Every campaign does not have to have exactly the same elements. That is why compaines alternate between different magazines, tv, radio, billboards, mobile, bus boards, etc.

I realize that forums are essentially "free", but you also run the risk of spamming (which is why you see me responding to answers here and rarely - if ever - actually starting threads.)

Two of the most important rules for any campaign are 1.)select the media appropriate to the target audience that you are trying to reach and 2.) don't over use a media (or particular publication) because that will casue you to oversaturte that market (think about how many banner ads are invisible to you now because you have seen them so often.

That is all I am going to say on this, it's Simon's deal and I am sure he had good reasons for doing what he did. Obviously, from the facebook reaction, this is not the facebook market so if he was trying to reach that market, this is not the right venue to hit them.

You know what...you are very right. (Duh, of course you are).

Adn I'll also say that your responses here are pretty good, too.

As you know, we have a pretty strong group of pro-AMD users here, and there are alot of commonalities between us..after all, that's what brings us all here to TPU day after day.

For alot of users, AMD really needs to prove themselves in order to gain any favor. Everyone is going to be highly critical. And while you cannot keep everyone happy all of the time, more often than not, there are ways to not make everyone anrgy, too.

You've kinda said and hinted that we were not Simon's target audience, but his postings on other forums about this campaign kinda says differently. Some people are going to be angry jsut simply over that...TPU is a fairly large community, and as a community, we were ignored over some other, much smaller ones. Heck, even HWC had this info before I posted it here.

We don't really see alot of real AMD marketing over here. We need some. And that's all I really wanted to highlight.

Sure, but that's not to say he didn't hand the account off to some lackey. With very directed psots on specific issues, he's just running damage control on BullDozer.

Closure..well..yeah, slow death works too. I don't think it serves any purpsoe any more other than to allow people to harp on AMD, since the promo has basically expired. A little anger here, taken to another thread, can cause issues elsewhere. Shiny happy people everywhere.
