So you've spent anywhere between $170 to $600 on a G.Skill Trident Z Royal memory kit at a time when memory prices are on the decline, what do you do next? G.Skill thinks some users find their modules too pretty to be installed inside a computer, and has come up with a completely useless jewel case to let them admire G.Skill's creation. We initially dismissed FC-UM4A-TRK as an April Fool's joke, but turns out it's a real commercial product purchasable separately. Commonly sold as the "G.Skill Trident Z Royal Display Box" in cursive font, this jewel case clad with faux leather much like the faux diamonds on the memory modules' RGB LED diffusers, is somewhat functional.

You open its top lid to find four DDR4 memory slots. You seat your Trident-Z Royal memory modules, pull out the USB cable from the bottom drawer, and plug the jewel case to your PC. This lights up the memory modules, cycling through their lighting presets. If you were expecting the USB connection to do anything beyond powering the case, such as mounting the memory modules as a RAMdisk volume, we have bad news for you. On the plus side, you get a microfiber cloth to wipe the pristine mirror finish of your memory modules, and a 1-year warranty, just in case.

This should be battery powered so you don't have to plug it in to look at the pretty lights.

The resale value of a kit inside this case will make some money.

As a species, we truly make way too much junk.
This should win a pointless product of the year award and we're only in April...

For real, why would I make this up? I know someone that has a unit.
Maybe they tried to make it into a music box as well, but failed?

The RAMdisk is an interesting thought, though. Too bad they didn't actually include that functionality. I remember some of us were using RAMdisks years ago... but then SSDs happened.

Holy... they overdid it, its not uncommon step down converters whistle. Actually any PWM related circuitry for RGB it does too. They should have put a linear shunt type regulator, albeit that is more inefficient (hot), but cheaper.

It looks like a mausoleum where you can put Lenin inside to me tbh.

not sure if this works for any memory kit, but if it does its a good way for reviewers/content creators to showcase ram lighting without having to use a testbench

I actually wouldn’t mind having one of these for my RAM reviews. It’ll make it significantly easier to get better shots of the RAM doing its thing compared to being in a motherboard. It’ll look much cleaner too.

If it’s not insanely priced, I may have to go against all of you and buy one. :D
