Graphics are an essential part of gaming. But without a real good gameplay, no matter how good the graphic is, the game is not worth the time. (unless anyone really likes to "look" at games rather than actually playing them)

Gameplay. I am very competetive when it comes to gaming so I usually set my graphics on very low settings to crank out as much FPS as I can. However I cant always look at a bunch of little squares, I like the options of HAVING good graphics.

Crash Team Racing?
It's those type of games where you don't have to be good at them to win so you can get your girlfriend over and she'll play it a couple of times round, then the third time she starts to slaughter you.
After the fifth time of losing you say "I don't wanna play anymore."

I still dig out a lot of the legacy games, even though I've beaten them numerous times over - Dungeon Keeper 2 for example. I especially love the games that give you enough freedom that you can find new ways to challenge yourself . . . I'm still a big fan of the Thief series, and still reguarly play Thief 1 and Thief 2. As dated as that game engine has become, the gameplay and freedom itself still tops out just about everything else I come across.

Personally I'd rather 75% gameplay and 25% graphics quality. It's so damn disappointing to not see any newer games coming out that are reminiscent of the good ol' days.

Balanced difficulty is awesome, plain stupid difficulty that makes gameplay un-enjoyable is mainly what we see nowadays when a game has 'good gameplay'.

Gameplay all the way. Good graphics doesn't make a game good, but a game can be a true gem and still have crappy graphics. There's so many examples of games that look good and play like scheit that it'd take a year to mention them all.

We've come to a point where any decent game looks "amazing" or at least good.
I mean, look at the final fantasy movie. When it was released everyone was stunned by the amazing realism - 5-6 recently released games look like or even better than that movie.
So, we could stop here and concentrate on nice game concepts and new gameplay styles. super mario galaxy for example looks ok, the graphics look 4-5 years old, but I don't care, cause it's damn fun to play! no need for global illumination and phong-shaded and normal-mapped whatsoevers. Just good ol' fine gameplay.
