Well, I just looked at the recent Steam statistics that are publicly given out to everyone if you just go on Steam and click on the gamer's online number and it will show you. Here are the SS:

counter strike has always been on top, and will be for as long as i can see.

what you have to take into consideration is every counter strike player has to use steam, and thus is represented. not every call of duty, battlefield etc user has to.
in other words, they are not accurate stats, as they only track steam users.

I would say most people would play more recent games if they had a nice rig to do it on. Most people see their money gobbled up by other things. Sad but true that in a recession we see decreased consumer spending compounded by the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer.

That's what I was really getting at. Both CS 1.6 and Source still dominate the boards on Steam. Maybe in a few years we might see it taken off its throne again by TF2 or some other new game, but I guess that was just a first time thing and CS has since regained its standings.

I was just trying to point out the obvious that some people don't actually take the time to do, and 1 of those things is to check the game statistics on Steam. We are all too busy talking to our buddies on Steam and playing games on them to be completely unconcerned with what the demographics are in correlation with what games are being played nowadays.

TF2, as of recent, trades blows with CS:S and 1.6 depending on the time of day (since TF2 has been free to play since 6/23/11. Right now, 27,800 TF2 players vs. 11,400 1.6 and 11,100 CS:S are playing.

Anyway, you are right about the "required Steam" games vs. "optional Steam" games and that can make a difference in the representation of the number of people playing the game.

My favorite in that list is, despite all the "required Steam"stuff, is that FM 2011 is fifth on that list. And it doesn't even require Steam to play. It's not something you'd imagine being in front of titles like COD: BO or L4D

Indeed, makes you wonder where Pro-Evoltion Soccer or Fifa would rank if they were on Steam.
