Gears 5 is the latest release in the epic game series that used to be an Xbox exclusive. We thoroughly test this Unreal Engine 4 based game on 23 graphics cards at three resolutions, including 4K Ultra HD. Both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards do very well here.

Seems like a good game. Windows 7 compatibility and good coop makes it a buy on the first Steam sale.

Are you going to retest when the game is released and game-ready drivers are available?

Whats going on with the GTX1660 in this game? Losing out the GTX 1060 3GB and AMD 570?

Good to see a well optimized game doesn't need over the top hardware to play it.

Probably newer drivers should have been used. Nvidia is at 386 series now.

At 2K leaving a 1.2K Euro for a 2080ti gives me additional 15FPS...

Well... I don't know if to laugh or cry about it.

Rare for Nvidia to miss a release date with an optimized driver. If this is the worst case, so be it. I would be curious to see if the game ready driver improves the situation at all. Pretty odd to see the 2070 Super so far behind the 1080 Ti, especially on a DX12 game. Are there any plans to retest the Nvidia cards on Monday, @W1zzard ?

It's interesting to see games like this that run almost exactly the same on a 5700 XT, and then games like Control that run much better on the 2070 Super. Looks like games that are meticulously optimized for the base consoles come out pretty well on the AMD PC GPU side.

Digital Foundry over at Eurogamer have a pretty interesting tech dive. They're using a lot of vertex shaders to reduce CPU utilization. Maybe that AMD shader grunt is what's making this such a good performer for AMD!

Whats going on with the GTX1660 in this game? Losing out the GTX 1060 3GB and AMD 570?

Looks like the 1660 Ti is suffering too, usually it's practically identical to the 1070 or better but here we are with a big deficit putting it closer to the 1060 6 GB. I don't know what's going on with Turing in titles like this. I thought Turing was a straight upgrade to Pascal, but here we are.

Yeah, my mistake, I meant 436. I haven't manually updated drivers in a while.
Still, that 1660 looks strange. Even more so considering other Turing cards seem to perform as expected.

What's the actual install size Wizz? If I remember right, GoW4 was around 120GB...

Seems like it's mostly well optimized. **looks at Control**

Id really love to know why that is. Ive been playing since yesterday at 9PM and am using 436.15 and I honestly cant believe how fantastic it is running without the mGPU support that GoW4 had. It is honestly the most well optimized game I have played in some time. Also, 431.68 was a hotfix release that corrected that weird mouse cursor issue and nothing else. Not saying your wrong or being dishonest, my concern is nVidia and the reasoning behind that recommendation. Good job btw, love these reviews/benchmarks! Long time lurker....

Weird opinion to have, I am assuming you have the game and play it with one of the cards that are performing oddly? No official GRD’s from nVidia yet either, this is hardly how performance will be by Monday for those 2-3 cards that are exhibiting strange performance. Lastly, the game is the most well optimized, best looking UE4 game released on PC yet and it isn’t even “Officially” available till Monday.

Definitely

Steam is 64.2 GB including Ultra Texture Pack

Gunfire Games is the developer of Remnant: From The Ashes.
Whoops, we have a system that auto-selects the mfgr based on title, which apparently failed here. Fixed now.

Not sure what makes you think the other Turing cards are performing as expected as they sure do not look as impressive as in other games compared to Pascal. The 2080 is a hair behind the 1080 ti where as it typically beats the 1080 ti by at least 10% or so. And the 2080 ti is only 20% faster than the 1080 ti where as its typically around 40% faster on average in newer games.

Hello from Denmark.

I've seen it again and again, why do you only use RX 570 4Gb in the tests when you now use both GTX 1060 3Gb and GTX 1060 6 Gb, AMD´s RX 570 8Gb could probably do better in many of the tests with the 8Gb version.

Game seems mediocrity personified and graphically decent, nothing more. This is a game built from the ground up for the 1.3TF Xbox One remember.

Of course it will.

I specifically picked the 4 GB version to test highlight differences between 4 GB and 8 GB (580). Both 570/580 with 8 GB would be too close in performance.

For NVIDIA the same comparison is 1060 3 GB and 1060 6 GB. The cards differ in shader count, just like 570<->580, it's just that NVIDIA named them the same
