hi,

Right now there is a couple of online vendors with discounts on two great PSUs

Either Corsair HX750 (Plat efficiency) at appr. 132 euro incl. VAT
or Seasonic Focus GX-850 (Gold efficency) at 128 euro.

I have this setup right now, where I run my Kaby Lake 8700K at shy of 5 GHz and want to keep it there.
OuterVision PSU Calculator part list

CPU: 1 x Intel Core i7-8700K
CPU Speed: 4900MHz
CPU Vcore: 1.25V
Video Card Set 1: 1 x NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
Core Clock: 1710MHz
Memory Clock: 1188MHz
Liquid Cooling Kit: 1 x Corsair iCUE H115i RGB PRO XT

Load Wattage: 591W
Recommended Wattage: 641W
Amperage: +3.3V: 11.5A, +5V: 11.4A, +12V: 45.5A
Recommended UPS Rating: 1100VA
Generated by OuterVision PSU Calculator 2021-02-24 03:48:39

What I want is a more quiet PSU than the 10 year old Corsair TX850 that served me well, but is not modular, fan is always on and has begun rattling.
Im just gaming, not mining so absurd load is unlikely to happen.

Between two great choices what is better:
Plat efficency 750W Corsair? Or Gold efficiency 850W Seasonic? Agonizing here...

PSU's generally perform better when not being stressed or underused, i would advice for the 850 but we are not just looking at watts here so it depends on each units components as well.
I would go for the seasonic or a completely different unit, is the shop online so that we can take a look at alternatives?

Out of those 2 the seasonic.

The 100w more of headroom matters more than a couple % points of efficiency.

I would actually go with a 650W Prime. (Or 550W but that may be pushing it.) - Depending on your local pricing. In a pinch, it can do 750W without any real issues and your usage case doesn't seem to be drawing peak power for more than but a sliver of your total useage time, so I wouldn't bother spending extra on the wattage premium, except of course if you care about more than just performance (thermals, acoustics) but then you'd be looking at like, 1,000W or greater Titanium units at that point, and they will come with a significant price premium.

One is happii.dk and the other Komplett.dk - prices are in DKK. Around 1.050 DKK (150 euro) is what I had in mind. Seasonic Prime 650 is around 200 euros.

I care about noise and thermals, but my old TX850 does fine on thermals, so I need nothing crazier. 650W is under recommended level - but for 50% moremI get 100 W less but a little better efficiency. Is that worth it?

EDIT: If you do care about noise, you may also want to consider the fanless version. It's quite more expensive though. Honestly, it all depends on what you are comfortable with like, your spending budget.
EDIT 2.0: The other part is of course your PSU fan may be unnoticeable anyways when you are on full load - the 3080 generates quite a lot of heat that needs dissipation, so I very much doubt that will be very silent on such a situation. And afaik all Primes have a fan-stop switch and are also quite silent when it isn't loaded.

Im good with the low rpm/hybrid fan psus. The HX750 is both platinum efficiency and has 0 rpm mode. When I game I wear headset so during load it is ok with a bit of fan noise.

I would recommend the 650W Prime in that case. (The Gold rated one, no real need to pay the Platinum/Titanium premium unless you're really worried about thermals.)

id say go with the higher wattage. i normally wouldnt, but since my own experience with a 3090 drawing more power than it is rated for, id advise on the side of caution. 3080's & 3090's drawing more power than is expected is not hard to find with a little google searching. it took a little checking before i realized it had to be the cards & not the power supplies. so, air on the side of caution is my advice.

HYBRID SILENT FAN CONTROL
The industry’s first, Seasonic patented, advanced three-phased thermal control achieves optimal between silence and cooling. This Hybrid Silent Fan Control functions in three operational stages: Fanless Mode, Silent Mode, and Cooling Mode.

BENEFITS
Reduced noise without increase in temperature;
Extended fan life due to the reduced number of fan rotations;
Optimized heat dissipation at all times;
Unsurpassed silent performance in Fanless Mode.
Additionally, there is a switch at the back of the power supply which allows users to customize their cooling needs by selecting between the Seasonic S2FC (fan control without Fanless Mode) and the S3FC (fan control including Fanless Mode).

i really wouldn't take that outervision wattage is factual. i assure you from first hand experience, (several time w/different rigs)that if you took a reading w/meter that it will be at least 100 watts less.

hell igor use a 500 watt bequit for a 5900x and 3080 rig . . .albeit barely.

that said and assuming you web brows and what not along with gaming; go for the plat. you'll already have 150-200 watts of headroom and the low load efficiency blows gold out of the water.

The Seasonic calculator seems ok. Though every time you choose a 3080 it pairs you up with their 850s

Maybe I should have went with that GX-850 after all :D

Yes, first I wrote a post in New Build Forum, but it disappeared, so I asked another thread. And then the first appears again later, maybe moderator approval? No harm intended and thanks for everyone who helped.

I wouldn't do any less than 700w for this build, as i said its better to be below 80% usage, its not just for efficiency but it also affects longevity, fan speed/noise and even future proofing.

Well, what do you know: Asus themselves recommend 850W for this particular card. I never paid attention to it as I already had an 850W PSU that albeit old, still supplies the necessary power without fuss. Case settled. You can go home now, Internets.

+1 for the Seasonic. I have that exact unit and can attest to its performance. Even when pulling 700w from the wall i have yet to actually hear the fan.

Edit: I have the Focus+ not the GX.

The Corsair power supply has half the ripple in comparison to the Seasonic unit. Just something to keep in mind when purchasing.

How did you find out that? I looked and looked for reviews of the GX-850 but couldn't find any. You have them?

Do some Google searches for something like "Seasonic Focus GX-850 ripple" and you'll find them pretty quick. Tom's Hardware is a great resource because they review pretty much every power supply model, but more importantly those reviews have great information on actual performance like ripple and efficiency at various loads. JohnnyGuru is also renouned to be great for power supply reviews, but his website is down and he's off working at Corsair now.

You may sometimes not find the EXACT model, but if that's the case, you can usually find a near-identical model that can be used as a point of reference.

As far as I know there isn't any good one's for the GX line only the older Focus+ but I wouldn't feel comfortable pairing any 750W with a 3080 too many people having random reboots even with a 850w power supply.

Like others, I would say the Seasonic and don't go under because the RTX 3080 like the 3000 series do peaks when in use and a PSU that can't handle the power peak will shut down.

People having random reboots with psu's in general or Seasonics? It is one of those topics that live well inside anecdotes and is hard to get a full fix on I think. Ive read a few reports of this happening here, so already now I am worried about the 850W model I have decided to get. Which is out of stock so delivery in early april first. Will cross my fingers. At least I will have it under warranty and right to return it if it indeed does crash with my 3080

People having random reboots with psu's in general or Seasonics? It is one of those topics that live well inside anecdotes and is hard to get a full fix on I think. Ive read a few reports of this happening here, so already now I am worried about the 850W model.
I have decided for the 850 and will cross my fingers. At least I will have it under warranty and right to return it if it indeed does crash with my 3080

I got a couple of Seasonic PSU's in my life and Corsair's the best have been SeaSonic's at the moment I am running a Prime 1200W 80+ Platinum with my system listed no issues.

It's just with the spikes that the RTX 3080 can produce having a 750W PSU doesn't sound great if it makes 489-500W spikes that means you got 250W left for everything else.
