Helllo,
I'm getting a new PC tomorrow and I am practically building from scratch.

can someone Please write a check list for me of what to do when i get windows up.

Eg

=bios update
=drivers


That sorta thing as i unfourtunatly don't have time to do it myself tonight as i am going out.

I want it printable for morning thanks!

What specs will it be? Please say you didn't go with the Q8200!

Check list:

Drivers; Do these before the BIOS update.
BIOS update; this can be done through windows, so no floppy drive or USB crap.
Install an AV, so you're shiny new windows doesn't get screwed up.
Install CCleaner (google it), clean up the registry and stuff. Make sure to back it up when it asks you to.
Find a defragmenter program, run that.

After you've done that, I'd say you should install all your favorite apps (games, office apps, media apps, etc) and then go and overclock!
Also, try installing Opera as your web browser because it is awesome. :D (Awaiting assault from Failfox fanboys).

I would update the BIOS before installing the OS.
install all the latest drivers
Go into msconfig and set your cores and max ram.
disable UAC and manage your services and start up. http://www.blackviper.com/
install antivirus and firewall and all that mess
defrag
Bench it with PI to insure stability and to monitor load temps.

I think thats about all I do. I may be missing something though.

No i'm going with the E8400 and overclocking it to hopefully 4.8GHZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Software Windows Server 2003 R2 as a Workstation now migrated to W10 with regrets.
  1. Set up your hardware
  2. Insert CD/DVD install
  3. Format a partition of 30GB as a quick format
  4. Install the OS
  5. Create a new partition D: for data, and S: for setupfiles
  6. Put all your install files into S
  7. Before installing, run windows update
  8. Once up to date, reboot
  9. Install AV
  10. Update AV
  11. NOW install any drivers
  12. And then any software
  13. Top Utils: ccleaner, defraggler, tclock, utramon, winrar, irfanview, wordweb, malwarebytes, speedfan,
  14. Now create a partition copy of your C: into a hidden partition. If you evey need to reformat, you just copy the setup from the hidden partition
  15. You might want Acronis Disk Director to do the previous step. Easy

i got my e8500 to 4.75ghz on air idk if youll be able to get that 8400 to that unless you have water

How often do you upgrade or better yet how long are you planning to keep this new rig? If the answer to the questions is not often and/or a very long time then I would consider a quad CPU instead if I were you...

The only quad that was in his budget range was the Q8200, and IMO for playing games an E8400 overclocked to 4+ GHz would easily outdo a Q8200, which doesn't OC that well.
