Getting dozens of email notifications for old, dormant threads

In the last couple days, I have received close to 3 dozen email notifications for new threads in forums and replies to threads I subscribe to where the last post was made as far back as 11/21/2015, up to 12/15/15.

I thought it was just a problem from yesterday, but I am getting more today.

Anyone else?

nope... but, I had it happen a long while back.
So I turned it all off, except for conversation notifications.

I can't turn it off if I want to be notified of new threads or replies to posts I participate in.

I am not ruling out my email host as being the culprit - but I wanted to know if others got them too.

Well, this morning I got three that were originally sent on the 27th. So I am going to change my email address and see if it keeps happening.

spambots tend to post in old threads, and we decimate them and take all their posts with them. If you get an email to a dead thread with no recent visible posts, that could possibly be why.

Yeah, I considered that as I know that is a common cause for emails that point to old or deleted/non-existent threads. But there were just too many and apparently, no other participants of those particular threads were getting notifications. At this point I am 99.9% convinced the problem was the email forwarding service (Bigfoot) I was using resending emails that should have been purged. I am guessing they had an outage of some sort (of course, they did not inform us

), restored from backups and resent those particular emails.

I have had that Bigfoot address for 20 years. I get 70 - 80 emails daily sent to 6 different email addresses, but this TPU is the only site I've been active in recently using that Bigfoot address, and so the only site I was getting these resent emails from. This is why it "appeared" (to me) to be a site issue.

Since changing my email address here at TPU to my GMail account, I got a small handful of emails sent to the old Bigfoot address, but only for threads with timestamps from when I was still using Bigfoot. I have received none (except expected emails) for any threads with timestamps after December 27th when I changed to the GMail account. That reinforces my belief it was Bigfoot and not TPU.

So hurry up and wait to see if I get any more but as each day passes and I get no more unexplained emails, I move closer and closer to 100% certain it was Bigfoot.
