It loads up as soon as I go into Outlook Express (my email client).

I can't remove it unless I log out of Outlook Express, because it's "an application using features from Windows Messenger"...

I don't use it, I use Windows Live Messenger.

I tried to remove it from add/remove programs in Control Panel, but it's not listed.

Any ideas on how I can do a complete uninstall of Windows Messenger? I'd hate having its fragments in my HD...

Pop in your Windows CD and go to Install Optional Components, unselect it.

It's a component service, not in add/remove programs.

To turn on the Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run option, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
2. In Group Policy, expand Local Computer Policy, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then expand Windows Messenger.
3. Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run, and then click Enabled.
4. Click OK.

uncheck windows messenger in the component wizzard which can be accessed by hitting the button for windows components on the add/remove software window.

Thanks Silverel, that kept Windows Messenger from having to run every time I open up Outlook Express.

Now to remove it from my hard disk (I have a thing for not wanting stuff which I don't want) I am guessing that I have to follow Danish Devil's advice...

look at my post.. its what danishdevil was hinting at.. but you only have to pop in the cd for installing stuff.. not removing.

Just done that (saved my very lazy ass from travelling to the next room to get my windows cd after sorting it out from the other xp cd's...:) )

Does that mean that effectively Windows Messenger is now removed from my system? Totally?

Edit: nvm I think that your post answered my question (you posted within a minute of me, I hadn't read your second post while I had been posting mine).

Thanks! :)

is there anything (if the folder even exists now) in the program files/messenger folder?

actually.. the uninstaller removes the main messenger and stuff.. but some residual files are still there.. you just delete the folder now, before you couldn't.

Yup I got this:

Ahh ok I just delete it and then check if Live Messenger works... Ty. :respect:

Edit: It gave me a warning that some programs might not work but it let me delete it.

the main program is gone.. i supposs those are files that the messenger would want when you reinstall it.. or files that didn't come with the messenger.

I deleted that stuff. Windows Messenger doesn't pop up anymore, Windows Live Messenger works well and so does Outlook Express.
Exactly the way I wanted it. Thanks.

always glad to help man.
