Hey guys, I play most modern games at my native res of 1920x1280 and I am wondering if the improvement will be huge over my Radeon 4890.. Don't get me wrong,, My 4890 still does the job when it comes to those demanding games (Skyrim, Diablo, Starcraft 2, BF 3, Crysis etc. etc., But I am curious if it is a significant boost in terms of performance. The reason I am upgrading so soon is because my 4890 GPU Fan is making an annoying sound and is starting to die, so I figured to either replace the fan or just flat out upgrade and i've chosen to upgrade.. So should I get the 7950? I found a guy who is selling it for 460$ Canadian used and perfect condition with receipt.. Sounds tempting..

So 7950 >>>> 4890 by a lot???

Thanks guys..

peter

uh look at reviews

4890 is a tiny bit faster then a 6770 compare 6770 with 7950 not that hard ;)
4890 is about 30% slower then a 5870 so the 4890 from a rough guess should offer 24-25fps at the settings w1zzard tested at so 24 vs 52 at stock vs stock w1zzard managed a 36% overclock the 7950 with 29% increase in performance if we extrapolate that data that takes us to 67 fps and BF3 just got another update for 7000 series gpus increasing performance another 10-15% taking us to 73fps granted this is all based on a general idea of proper performance scaling but still 24 vs 73fps is about the upper end of what you can expect to gain, while 52 should be the minimum you see out of the box.

Also why buy a used 7950 you do realize brand new they cost the same or less then what that guy wants correct?

7950 Sapphire stock reference card $460
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=67897&vpn=11196-00-40G&manufacture=SAPPHIRE&promoid=1078

7950 Gigabyte Overclocked Windforce x3 model $480
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=67546&vpn=GV-R795WF3-3GD&manufacture=Gigabyte

7950 PowerColor overclocked edition $480
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=67618&vpn=AX7950 3GBD5-2DHPP&manufacture=PowerColor

7950 XFX Double Dissipation Edition $480
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=67748&vpn=FX795ATDFC&manufacture=XFX

so considering a brand new card is about the same cost as his used i would haggle and get a better deal, or just buy new

Thank you for the great help.. but 460$ without tax is not a good deal? I think those prices will go above 500 for this card after taxes.

If you can hold off I would, that's not a great price, and the new cards come out in march or so I have been told so those prices will drop as will the 6 series cards..check out the 6990 that card will get cheaper very soon. I have 2 4890s and the performance is good but I'm tired of the crossfire problems so I'm just sticking it out til prices drop. 6990 or 7950 for me

At that price i'd hold off a bit. Used you should save at least $100 compared to new IMHO

7950 should walk all over a 4890, 4890 was a pretty good card for it's time. I still have a LNIB VaporX in the spare part's drawer  I may update this generation if the price is right otherwise i'll be on the next series of ATi GFX

Just a quick contribution:

He mentioned $460 Canadian, and as I'm also Canadian, I already know that isn't a very good deal. Our tax rates differ according to what Province we're in, but just as a reference point, I live in Ontario and our tax rate is 13%. So for him to live in Ontario and buy a new 7900 series, it would cost him at least $520.

So why isn't $460 flat a good deal? Because it's used. Why someone would purchase a 7950 and then want to get rid of it so quickly may be unknown (or maybe petepete has an explanation he hasn't mentioned), but I'd raise an eyebrow at the situation and the possibility that this person tried to overclock it hard enough to ruin it and is trying to pawn it off for almost enough $$$ to try again.

When you're dealing with dollar figures this "high" and a Buy -> Sell timeline this quick, the risk of that possibility has to be taken into account. So no, $460 for a Kinder Surprise is not a good deal, not when the first possible price changer from Nvidia is so near and for just $60 more you get covered by a warranty and get all of the cabling goodies of a retail package. Those HDMI and DisplayPort cables included in some of these retail packages aren't just shits and giggles when you're suddenly looking at making a HTPC setup or upgrading your monitor.

So either wait or save up another $100 petepete. I would recommend doing both.

I have his phone number and where he lives, and he has the receipts to give me with a lifetime warrenty. He says he had it for only 8 days and needs the money for school.. I think it's legit.. He says it runs perfectly and the temp doesnt even go above 60'C and "there are no issues with this card." He offered for me to try the card in his house as well.. So 460 is terrible deal eh? :(

EDIT: Sorry for the confusion,, 460 is the price for the card, TOTAL

id still say wait but thats just me next month the 7850 is coming out supposed to replace the 6990 in terms of performance but at a cheaper price around $350 i think it said. if it out performs the 7950 like they say it will price on 7950s will drop accordingly. but if your also like me you want the NEW card now. also beware the new card has an 8 pin power supply make sure your psu has the 8 pin
