As the DailyTech author Tuan Nguyen states in one of his new articles the IEEE, a non-profit standardization gremium, is currently working hard on the new 802.16m standard. The technology behind should bring wireless products to new speeds as fast as 1Gbps. The good part is that the standard will apply to Wireless LAN but WiMAX and 4G as well. The bad news is that the standard itself is one or two years away from being finished.

until then im going to have to live with 108mb/s :(

I have to think how high into the speed/frequency range before sitting next to it will be the equivalent of sticking your head in a microwave.....

most microwave ovens operate around 1.8ghz to 2.45ghz (low to high power)...

Thats why it interferes with WIFI a lot.

also...

satellite dishes operate at the microwave frequency...

but you dont see some guy warm his casserole with an access point ;)

As long as they don't have to raise the output power I'm fine with that.
Especially cause I won't use it.

LOL in 60 years:

"Various people sue wireless access point/router sellers for causing cancer."

reminiscent of the days when smoking was seen as healthy

Well that's cool, but knowing wireless standards you'd be luckey to actually get half that in real world bandwidth.

Even if the per-point bandwidth didn't increase much... if it allowed multiple devices to successfully stream 100M both ways that would be AMAZING. For 99% of users, a cabled 100M network is quite sufficient bandwidth. Only fileservers need higher bandwidth. However, we still use wired 100M on a hub/router/switch because it remains SO MUCH FASTER than wireless, why:

1./ More than one device operates over router/switch simultaneously
2./ Less contention
3./ 100M guarantees... not handshaking and dropouts to slower speed

IF wireless could achieve this... then we could do away with wired 100M networks. Imagine the cost savings in new installations! Thousands of dollars for small business networks... NICE

Even though your throughput is supposed to be 108MBS...it really isnt so. I mean, if your connection is 3GBS....then your only able to download up to that. However, rarely is it so that you can do that...so in response to this, I hope that they make it where its a true connection, because if it is, that will be awesome. Less wires and more speeds with half the costs.
