Hey there. I’ve been keeping an eye on 2TB M.2 SSD prices & deciding between a good value/reliable Gen 3 or Gen 4.

I was set on settling for a Gen 3 as I don’t think I’ll notice the Gen 4 speed benefits for my use case, but I just noticed a Gen 4 Gigabyte model GP-ASM2NE6200TTTD on sale for Australian dollars $369 & was wondering if others here have it & can comment on its performance & whether it’s a decent SSD to entrust with my data!

I have an Aorus Pro AX B550 motherboard with 5600X CPU fyi.

Thanks.

So that's like 271 usd? For that price it's a pretty good deal if it's within 50 usd of the 980 pro or SN850 I would go with one of them instead.

That's the first generation Phison PCIe 4.0 controller.
They get hot and you only gain sequential performance over a good PCIe 3.0 drive.
Personally I wouldn't get one and I would avoid all Phison E16 based drives.
This has nothing to do with it being a Gigabyte product.

Maybe it’s a good thing the price rose overnight & I missed out on the deal then.

I notice the same controller‘s used on the newer model release 2 years later…

Reviews do recommend decent case airflow to keep them cool as they do tend to get warm, backing up what you say. Thanks.

Hopefully more deals pop up on newer drives in future & on Black Friday (Considering the Kingston KC2500 or Samsung 970 Evo Plus Gen 3 as alternatives).

No idea what that novel is that you find, but this should be the one to go for if you're going Gigabyte
It won't be nearly as cheap though.
Phison normally makes good controllers, they just rushed the first PCIe 4.0 one, so it's more like a souped up PCIe 3.0 controller that runs too hot.
It still does the job, but personally I'd pick something else.

This is a review of the drive you were considering, look at the thermal images and performance and you'll see why it's not a great purchase.

Compare that to a drive using the more recent Phison E18 controller

It seems like quite a few companies have been "dumping" their E16 based SSDs, as here PNY has been doing a deal on their E16 based drives for a few days.
The 2TB model was going for the equivalent of AU$344.
That said, they've also had their Phison E12 based PCIe 3.0 4TB model on sale for the equivalent of AU$589.
