The news has for some reason been about TSMC having engineering samples shipped, or then a rumor that Zen was going to TSMC, because GloFo funding was pulled due to low oil revenues. It's almost like someone plants these to prompt GloFo into a response.
Well, the original rumour about AMD switching to TSMC from GloFo came from and Italian tech site whose contributor is so confident that the rumour is reality that he is quite content to allow Expreview (who reprinted the rumour and most attribute as the source) to remain the focus of the information.
And I’m not saying it’s companies (like Intel or Nvidia), more just other there’s a lot interested parties and investors wanting an "inkling" of what the heck is up at GloFo?
Oddly enough, the site that initiated the rumour is avidly AMD orientated rather that Intel or Nvidia, and pretty much stated that AMD related news gets the page hits for them:
At Bits And Chips the news about AMD are the most read. Idem at TechPowerUp!, WCCFTech and other sites. AMD is not the most important company, but it moves a lot of visits.
Small time tech site struggling for page views and ad revenue in a market very competitive for readership initiates a rumour guaranteed to raise readership. Seems like smoking gun material, no?
Whatever the reason GloFo had rather holding information as to 14FinFET close to their chest, though finally the chatter necessitates a counter to quell rumors.
GloFo have been through this before. Remember when the company were going through their "our yields are great" phase for 32nm? which then morphed into "yeah, maybe there was a problem - but its fixed now" and then "Yeah, it's really screwed up"
Add in the cancelled processes, the late ramp and bad yields of those it has undertaken, and you can see why GloFo probably aren't too forthcoming with information.
Eh?, No-one is the slightest creeped out by the two bunny suits staring deep into each others eyes. That 14nm process must be something else.

They probably share adjoining work stations in that cozy environment you can see in the background.

1) What exactly is "good yields?" The human part of me wants to say reasonably high, but the PR side of me says that it's anything in the ballpark of what they were expecting. If that was 80%, and they actually only got 75%, it's not a "good yield" by the 25% loss but it's about the 80% they were expecting.

80%+ is usually considered "good".

Well, the original rumour
Wow, it a rumor written up by Gian Maria Forni Bit and Chip. I'm not saying he didn't "hear" what he wrote about, but where does he get it from?

Here's my thoughts and reasoning, the rumor in most subsequent writings indicated the Holding company Government of Abu Dhabi, or is it ATIC, or is it now Mubadala Technology... didn't want to infuse cash to buy new 14nm FinFET equipment. Rather wanting to recycling where possible current 28nm equipment. Such capital expenditure didn't get decided 6 months ago, and probably not even a year ago, but those kind of decisions are long term funding to source and deliver. The idea the recent fluctuations in the revenues being garnered from oil business are what causes them to think now of cutting-back funding for tooling and equipment that was written and funded in budget 2 years ago seems far-fetched.

Oddly enough, the site that initiated the rumour is avidly AMD orientated rather that Intel or Nvidia
As I said it probably had nothing with any competitor hardware company so the site being pro/bias is not as concerning.

GloFo have been through this before
Well their track record in the early years has been fraught to be sure, but this shrink has been (or should've) been the one exercise to bring what would be a true 7 year plan to fruition. I'm not counting that GloFo can/will shake the Fab business to it core, but if they can't start pulling business in for 14nmFinFET they will miss-out on gaining true acceptance for many years.

Now I try no to get wrapped up in a tech-site speculation and rumors, rather read carefully in the corporate weasel wording of "forward-looking" statements. That's all this Discussion of 'News' wasn't about their 'announcement'... those words should've been part of article. I see nothing about AMD, Zen, Artic Samsung, etc.

"Our 14nm FinFET ramp is exceeding plan with best-in-class yield and defect density. The early-access version of the technology (14LPE) was qualified in January and is well on its way to volume production, meeting yield targets on lead customer products. The performance-enhanced version of the technology (14LPP) is set for qualification in the second half of 2015, with the volume ramp beginning in early 2016. Prototyping on test vehicles has demonstrated excellent logic and SRAM yields and performance at near 100% of target." - Jason Gorss, Senior Manager, Corporate and Technology Communications at Globalfoundries 9/26/2015

Breaking down what I say is not important, as it all boils down to...
we wait and given what’s on-the-line for all involved it will be a turbulent year.

No idea. The site doesn't have a reputation for insider scoops that haven't originated elsewhere.

I'm guessing that when Abu Dhabi's development company purchased Globalfoundries and Chartered Semi, they thought that the process was going to relatively easy to manage (since the key personnel remained in place), but the collapse of the gate last process technology in such spectacular fashion, and subsequent issues with cancelled bulk nodes, late ramp of SOI, 20nm being MIA for a long time, 14nm XM going belly up all likely contributed to Abu Dhabi reassessing its bottomless pit funding.
As I said it probably had nothing with any competitor hardware company so the site being pro/bias is not as concerning.
The bias wasn't the point directly. The point I was making was that B&C tailor their coverage towards AMD content to maximize readership. A story about GloFo's 14nm ramp has a direct bearing on AMD's fortunes, and thus should generate a disproportionate amount of page hits in comparison with a similar rumour concerning Samsung, or Intel, or UMC.
