Going 10th Gen! Check out my parts list, thoughts?

I'm pretty pumped. I last upgraded to the most mature quad core and waited as long as I could stand.

I love AMD but can't do it, all I do on my pc is game so best gaming fps is my only decision criteria here. Hilarious coincidence is that I just recently got my settlement check from https://www.amdcpusettlement.com/ for my long gone turd, the fx8350. Not interested in waiting for zen 3, but if it's a show stopper when it drops I'd switch.

From what I can tell the new gen of intel boards supports very fast ram speeds and that some games benefit from ram clock. So I am going to try ddr4-4500 CL18 over a kit of ddr4-3600 CL16. See what happens. Both are an upgrade over re-using my present ddr4-3200 CL15.

It's only another ~$100 to go 10900k over 10700k but I reason that I'll be able to keep the i7 cooler easier with 2 fewer cores and thus stay at higher clocks longer.

I do not understand the giant motherboard market right now, there are so many options it's a little nuts to years past. The high end options are fucking retarded!! Pay the cost of a cpu, or full tier gpu upgrade, to upgrade to the high-end tier mobo that will net <1% performance??? Simply a dumb proposition there. I considered the Strix Z490E but it is sold out, $100 more for a Maximus Hero for no assured gains... skip. So I decided to go Gigabyte Aorus Z490 Ultra, may even have better power than the Strix E. The evga Z490 FTW looks good too but isn't out yet... w/e

Recycling my 1080ti and will hold off a generation or two. I would love a fast AMD card to come out so I can use freesync2....

The piecemeal nature of getting ones too small. 4tb is for backups, 970 evo was for os and games. Ran out of room for games, got another nvme. Ran out of rooms for games, got another.

Half the stuff on the parts list is recycled / already have.

I agree, the 10600k is basically the 8700k and still a very capable gaming CPU

Intel's 10th generation is DOA.

Thanks! Ya I've seen all those and been keeping up. I wanted i7 for the balance against between i5 and i9, hoping to run the 10700k at the same speed as in the last video so it should be even better than the i5 slightly, obviously. I also have the 4500 CL18 which if that runs in XMP (it should!) will be almost as fast as their CL15 4000 but for about $200 less.

Crazy ram and an i5 doesn't make sense to me.

edit: why only 16GB of RAM. You should look at no less than 32GB . For a high end gaming 32gb is a must.

When you're building parts lists at PCpartpicker, you can go to "saved parts lists", then click on the "inventory" tab to add components that you already own. You can then use them in parts lists.

If you're buying a new SSD, consider a 2 TB model instead of ½ TB.
If you're buying a new HDD, consider a 6 TB or larger model instead of 4 TB, but don't buy a drive that's infected with shingles.

My Steam library won't fit on my SSD, so I have multiple steam library folders (under settings, download, steam library folders) and keep most games installed to the NAS, with only the titles that I'm currently playing moved to the SSD (right click on the title in your Steam library list, properties, local files, move install folder).

I'm somewhat skeptical of the benefit of heavily overclocked memory versus reasonably-priced DDR4-3600. Can you link to some benchmarks that show that this is a worthwhile expense?

Go with AMD until Intel lifts the ban of overclocking on non K processors and mid-range chipsets.

Na matter what we write he has it in his head that he wants intel so we cant change that. Keep the 1080ti and get the 10700k and a hell of a good cooler to keep it cool. Also because this is a gaming machine the multiple NVMes are completely unnecessary, you might occasionally save 1-2 seconds in load time, so paying almost $300 for a motherboard is lighting money on fire no matter what processor is chosen.

My post wasn't clear. I meant load times vs standard SSDs. It'd be better to get 1NVMe and the rest as SSDs or HDDs. Part of the reason that the motherboard is so much is because a) it's a new platform, b) because it needs to be beefy to support the amount of power the current gen Intel parts are pulling. Depending upon what Ryzen 4xxx brings he could get an x470/b550 for half the price and identical performance.

your money to burn, parts list looks fine, but i'd probably get a 750-850 watt psu instead, intel cpu and all the storage will use quite a bit of power especially with a 1080ti

I would urge you to consider going bigger (and possibly fewer) on the m.2 drives also, and whichever ones you do buy, get all the same model, size, rev. etc.... that way if you wanna raid them (for moar spppeeed) in the future, it will be much much simpler

Also consider this before buying ANYTHING: Intel has already stated that the LGA 1200 socket will only be around for 2 generations of cpu's (until LGA 1700 comes out), so if you wanna upgrade again in about 2-3 years, you will have to buy yet anutha mobo/cpu to get there....but OTOH, you will be able to sell those last gen parts to recoup part of the upgrade costs too ....

I can understand saying "No" to a suggestion because I've done it before myself but this is kinda harsh, esp for a single suggestion.
If someone keeps coming at you over it after you've already said "No", then I guess it's warranted but that wasn't the case here.

MEG z490 Unify is a better board, but otherwise the build looks good.

I would personally go with a Prime TX 650/750 rather than the gold PSU you have, since an extra 4% efficiency and better performance for OC would be noticeable when you're pulling 250w from the CPU alone.

If you want to do an AIO - Alphacool are better than anything Corsair puts out. But I would be seriously considering custom water for a 10700k. You could sustain 5.2ghz all core with no issue, maybe 5.3 if you had good enough cooling.
