My rig in my system specs has given up due to the motherboard failing and taking out a stick of RAM.
Replaced the motherboard and found it was DOA.
Replaced it again and found the last motherboard would not even show a green light.
So I have had enough and I am going back to the AMD side of processors.

So now I am wondering which processor is the best value vs performance out of:-
FX6100 & the FX8120.

I'll be mainly doing audio recording, encoding and gaming.

I'm leaning towards the FX8120 based on seeing what people are using and what OC they are getting with it.

I don't plan to reach 4Ghz but FX8150 speed and will be using the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ in push>pull.

BTW I will be getting is a M5A97 EVO and 2 X 4GB Corsair Vengeance CL9 sticks.

?

Are you having issues because used replacements (socket 775 is no longer produced new) for your motherboard don't have a good replacement record?

Do you mean that you've tried something on the lga 1155 socket, and they were DOA?

If you're jumping from a 775 to a new AM3+ then you might not see a lot of performance improvement. The "eight" and "six" core processors don't function like Intel's offerings; so the performance beats 775 almost exclusively in multi-threaded (read: not games) applications, but falls very much short on single or lightly threaded applications (read: games and most applications). If you compare an FX processor versus a sandy bridge, you might be shocked to see the difference (how much sandy bridge beats FX)...

If you are still bent on not getting a 1155 socket processor (2500k being an extreme value), then ask yourself what you really need. The 8120 has more cores and isn't bad, but puts off some crazy heat. The 6100 produces less heat, which will better support the high overclock you need to get comparable performance to a stock Intel system. If you were doing a lot of encoding the 8120 is a no brainer, but a gaming rig will likely benefit from a 6100.

Seriously though, Intel is beating the FX by a wide margin. They've got good pricing (8120 versus 2500k or 2550k), much better performance, and they put off less heat. 775 may be a venerable socket, but Intel has done much better in the past couple of years....

If you get an AMD board, I would recommend getting a Thubian Phenom II X6 for now, and if Piledriver performs go with a Piledriver X8. But yeah right now the current FX offerings are 30-40% slower clock-for clock vs Intel SB, whereas the old Phenom II's are only ~20% slower clock-for-clock, core-for-core. Piledriver is looking to have IPC similar to or better than the Phenom II's and clock higher than Bulldozer, so hopefully us on the AMD side will have something that can compete with Ivy Bridge.

@lilhasselhoffer
The 775skt boards weere bought used, one was considered in working order and the other needed to be tested.

I have considered an i5 2500K package deal would be 100NZD more than the FX8120 package.

I would like to get a Thuban but there are none available new anymore which is why I am looking at the FX series.

@JrRacinFan
Yes I have taken a look at the reliability of the board through reviews on the web and found it has much better reliability than my old 680i any day.

Have you thought about picking up a secondhnd 2500k or Skt 1155 boards in the FS section? might save you a bit of money. Im sure theres probably one or two floating about as members have either upgraded to the 3770k or Ivy Bridge where possible.

a 2500k@4.7 or 4.8Ghz will pull clear ahead of the FX-8120 for everything you need it to do and it will do it on less volts too.

So I really recommend that you squeeze as much from your wallet for the 2500k as you can. sell your body if you need to :p

Going from Q6600 to Phenom II X6 is not worth it, to begin with, and AMD FX has nothing nothing substantial compared to Phenom II X6.

At around US $230, Core i5-3570K looks like a really nice upcoming option.

go for the M5A97 EVO and the 8150. they kick ass..

i dont think it'll help, but recently one of my friends had to RMA his i5 2500K TWICE. it died on him at stock volts, 4GHz.

comparing that to another of my friends who passes 1.56V through his 955 to get to 4.2GHz on stock cooling, AMD is pretty reliable now.

Yeah from now playing on the i3 Sandy, I can tell you that even though the chip is not able to be overclocked. I haven't had the inkling to need to(even though I couldnt anyway). Core clock nowadays is secondary, its all about the IMC now.

I can't see any reason to build a new machine with an FX CPU except for the price (this is also debatable). It sounds boring really, but an i5-2500K or the 3570K is the way to go. You can choose from a wide offer of chipsets and boards on 1155 socket to suit your needs.

Go with a 8120, you save a few "bucks" vs the 8150 and the Performance/OC is about the same.

Just make sure you get a nice Mobo to let that best OC like hell...;)

Your post coincides with your avatar.
I never said it was anything to do with Intel.
Unless you are sensitive about the whole AMD or Intel choice which I really don't care about as I have jumped back and forth between all competitors.

My choice for AMD is based on the pricing of the packages available in my area over the Intel packages.

I can't see any reason to build a new machine with an FX CPU except for the price (this is also debatable). It sounds boring really, but an i5-2500K or the 3570K is the way to go. You can choose from a wide offer of chipsets and boards on 1155 socket to suit your needs.

Lol

Yeah I see it time and time again even though I state the pricing in my area brand new with the packages available are more expensive if going with a 2500K otherwise I would go that route and I am reluctant to buy second hand after the mess I had gone through recently with failed motherboards.

Id be reluctant too if i was buying second hand parts off someone i didnt know on ebay. I rarely buy secondhand stuff on ebay for that matter.

buying from another TPU member is different though, Most members have been around a long time and have done a lot of trades with other members and have heatware and feedback to prove that a good trade took place. Ive bought a lot more secondhand stuff from TPU members then I have bought off ebay and ive had my ebay account a lot lot lot longer then my TPU account.

but of course its upto you. Im just saying there are good things in the FS section that shouldnt be overlooked because they are secondhand.

Yeah after what has happened I had enough.

I am seriously looking at going for an Intel 2500K now and spending the extra cash after taking a look at the Skyrim benchmarks and finding out the FX6100 performs worse than the 1090t.

I went for the FX-8120 and before this I had the Phenom 1055T the FX is considerably better I have it running with E.C.O water-cooler and running perfect @4.6Ghz I get great frame rates in most games like BF3 130+fps Skyrim 90fps older games not so good but still acceptable and for the price it is well worth it. Hope this helps:):)

For gaming the FX4170 and FX6200 are the best choices in the FX range.
