As per the thread title, could anyone recommend a good software product to OCR a bunch of PDFs in Japanese?

I'm willing to spend some cash, thinking about $50 or so.

I have no idea if it does Japanese, but I use ABBYY FineReader 11 at work. I think there are a few newer versions as 11 is a few years old. It works great and is very fast and takes full advantage of i7s. All eight threads are maxed when it is 'reading'. It reads 350 pages in less than 3-4 minutes depending on what I have running in the background (i7-4770).

EDIT: here is a link to FineReader 12, turns out it supports Japanese and even has a dictionary function too.

Apparently 11 supports Japanese too. I didn't even know that haha.

Abbyy finereader is good, I've used over a number of years without issue.

He said he was looking to spend $50 or so, so can you provide links where it can be bought at that price? I don't see it anywhere for much under $100. It sounds like good software.

mmm...I might use the 30 day trial:

You can process up to 100 pages (max. 3 pages per export) with your free, 30-day trial version of ABBYY® FineReader® 12 Professional.

Max 3 pages per export? I suppose I could live with that, the longest PDF is 15 pages long. I guess I could open it 5 times and save 3 pages each time. Unless I misunderstand the statement

For those that read this I have found PDF Studio Pro at a modest $129 does everything and competes well with Acrobat and is cross platform. My understanding is that it does Japanese as well as Chinese. Best to visit the site at http://www.qoppa.com/pdfstudio/ I find Wondershare a little restrictive. Hope this helps

PDF Studio is great!! I have Verison 10, and it is a neat tool. The thing I like most about it is that the program keeps the orignal formatting and font of the PDF. If you edit a letter, it automatically ajdusts it to the same font. This is something Adobe does not do. Kudos, PDF Studio!
