Good buy or not on GTX 465?

I was thinking as I'm going to get rid of my 775 system soon and go all out with my new system in June, I was thinking that I could give it some extra life and have it as a spare or even just buy this card as a backup. A local store have MSI GTX 465's on sale for $109, now that sounds pretty cheap to me. I might even buy two, so guys...is it worth it or not?

Could the $109 not go towards something else in your new rig? Personally I wouldn't bother & put the money to something of better worth.

That might be dirt cheap for AUS. How much are GTX 460 cards going for so we can have some reference.

Well Gtx 560s start at around 180$+ and the 465s are pretty hard to come across. 6850s start around 145$+. Its not going to be my main card but could definitely give this system a buzz once I build my new system in June. sorry if any.mistakes are present im on my phone.

backup card for what reason. IIRC if just to get a display goin a PCI Graphics card will work in that instance which can be had for 44 Bux

If you really want a decent backup card (which can play games decently), then I guess the GTX 465 from MSI is pretty okay for that price; it would be even better if it can be unlocked (to "GTX 470"), but I suppose these are the newer GTX 465 cards which are not unlockable.

I have looked up the Techpowerup's performance summary in the HD 7770 review and you can see the GTX 465 is still quite decent, it's overall performance is between a GTX 460 1GB and the HD5850, and is overall faster than the HD 7770 which costs more but is more energy-efficient.

if you have the $$ to spend i would do it. Unlocked or not @ that price its a good deal for a 775 system. Like you said you could use it as a spare PC or as an extra budget gaming rig if you have a friend over. I know i wouldn't mind using someones GTX 465 for some gaming action if i were at their house.

its return to your need? for gaming or just for all around needs?
for that price its cheap but if you need more power for gaming maybe better you save or add some $ to get newer card or newer architecture

personally, I don't think a single GTX465 is going to outperform your GTS250 tri-SLI config(provided your GTS250 cards have 1 gb of vRAM apeice)

Not always! It must have the correct PCB running 10 memory chips. Many of the 465's were running 8 memory chips and did not have the correct PCB or GPU chip to unlock to a 470

But at $109 it would be a good buy. most of the 465's that I have seen going used are running around the $110 to $125 area.

Maybe, but the 4xx series of cards -ate- power, and also run hot. (I know, I had two 470's)

I'd pass and use that money for something else, considering 560's are close in price, and will go down even more in time with the new launches coming soon.

I have a passive gtx 430 for physx and it work well,but i know what you meen i had a sli of 480 so for the hot temps i know what you talking about.

Any GTX550Ti's available? Not much of a bump down in performance but quite a bit of a bump down in power consumption.

What you have to remember is that the 465 is the "big" GF100 chip, like your 480's, not the cut down version (GF108 maybe?) of the 430.

If its unlockable yes,if not no because its to slow for the power it uses.
Not good for physix unless you like wasting resources(according to wizz its a 212w card), power.

of course if it does unlock to a 470 that'd be cool too. you'd get a decent performance boost (i think about 25-30%) from it being a 465 with minimal power usage increase.

I think the 465 is a 200w card while the 470 is 215w. The 550TI is around 120w (that is if hwcompare.com has their infos right)
