I took the fan and struts off the stock i7 cooler for a photo contest and realized it fits perfectly over all 6 ram sticks. I don't know about mounting, but it occurs to me this will not only move way more air than after market ram coolers but it should also be pretty much dead silent. You could probably mount it with a fat rubber band going back around the ram locking clips and the the legs of the fan. A 775 fan might better fit boards with 4 slots.

Unfortunately 775 stock fan is too wide for 4 slots, was the first thing I looked at for ghetto cooling my ram.

Then I made this instead.

Bending and cutting aluminium and fixing rubber edging to the device, fan is attached with rubber bolts.

Also this wee thing moves as much air as a corsair cooler but with half as much noise :]

Never thought about this, but it's actually a good idea. I've got two i7 stock coolers I could try this on.

I'm definitely not buying the new Corsair fan w/LED's for $50. Geesh

That's a really cool way to cool the RAM, I never thought of that. Nice one. :toast:

Is this really nescessary? How hot does RAM really get? My heatspreaders barely get warm at 2.15v...

I always thought ram had a much lower heat tolerence than, say, a CPU; Could be wrong though..

Anyway, even if the cooling is necessary, it's debatable how much cooling after-market ram fans provide because ram isn't designed to be actively cooled... otherwise it would be covered in (a) heatsink(s), not just a heatspreader

Too bad there's no real way to moniter the temps D:

True.

RAM really just gets warm, but rarely does it actually get hot. Then again, you really want to have the RAM cooled as best as possible, and to some, they need/want to have a big ass fan or two sitting on top of the sticks. Especially if you do a lot of RAM tweaking/overclocking, good cooling is essential.

I personally just have a 120mm fan sitting at the top of my case that pulls the heat of my RAM sticks. And really, that's all any normal clocked/slightly overclocked RAM would really need.

If you're water cooling and say running DDR2 above 2.2v I'd recommend an air cooler for your ram. But I'd really recommend something free or cheap. I wouldn't fork out $20 for some noisy little 40mm kit.

THANKS dude, but my RAM doesn't need cooling so I'm using it for my NB instead :). Not using any adhesive or such, just wrapped the wires so it doesn't fall off :toast:
