Good skt 478 cooler?

I need to cool a prescott in my mom's computer, any recommendations? Did these sockets have those big retention mechanisms? I cant remember but if they did then i took it off a while ago. It has a big thermaltake cooler on it now but its loud and doesnt cool for shit.

Almost all Scythe coolers come with s478 retention mechanism. Check out their line of coolers and choose what suits your needs. They are much better than the cheap s478 only coolers made by companies like Masscool, Thermaltake etc.

sounds good, do i need the stock retention thing or do those not need it? i dont think i have the one that came on the motherboard anymore.

I have a Ninja II on my S478 Prescott (which is overclocked to 4.2Ghz, and keeping under 55c load), so I can say it is a great cooler. I don't know for their other coolers, but the Ninja II does need the stock retention bracket because its own retention mechanism uses it to connect to the motherboard.

yeah, a scythe heatpipe cooler should drop temps considerably. haven't tried it on a prescott, but i got one on a 2.4ghz northwood, and it idles more or less at room temp. (75f) actual cpu temp is around 77-78f idle. 30c at full load.
