Well, it's ALWAYS a good time to buy a new GPU, just like it's always a good time to buy a new CPU, which in turn makes it a good time to buy a new mobo, ram, drive, psu, case etc etc...

hahahah...n.O.t....

There's only 3 times when it is good time to buy new stuff....

A) When newer, better, faster stuff has been announced, and
B) Prices of the previous gen stuff has dropped significantly, or
C) You just got rich & have mega$$ to burn on new stuff just because you can.. :D

it's up to you what you like

I've been told a hundred times that 980ti and 1080ti were the best purchases, but I liked gtx 1080 and rtx 2070 super way more for reasons other than just raw performance.

@Vayra86
going with 2070/2080 might be a waste in "your" eyes, does not make it for everyone.
i sold my 1080 and wasn't gonna wait until ampere (when again? ;)) without having a gaming (capable) gpu.
especially was worth it to me, since i got a LC card as open box for 650$.

as long as we dont pay for a users hw, we can recommend to not get something,
but the value/cost is a waste is in the eye of the beholder.
the same way we dont need a +300K 2 door super sports car as a daily driver,
still doesnt mean that the person that wants one and has the money for it,
shouldnt get it just because it cost multiple times more than a "normal" sports or any other car i can use to go from A to B.
All I look at is generational jumps, timing and perf/dollar my friend and those are hard metrics, some of which return consistently in reviews. Most of these topics are for people who buy one GPU in a number of years, being two to even four years time. This 1070ti already lasted as much as two. So, the outlook is a new GPU that will do at least something similar, right? Otherwise, its a step back. Having to upgrade faster = more net cost over X time = bad.

Whether it is worth it to some individual is to each his own. Whether it is worth it in terms of timing and perf/dollar or 'return on investment', is a concrete matter and with experience buying GPUs you figure that out.

I share that knowledge so inexperienced users can make the right moves AHEAD of time. And not after the fact discover that the jump they made was largely insignificant. I and many others can tell from experience having seen many performance jumps in our time, what value 15-20% really represents. And factor that in against the passage of time and new releases, too. There is a balance to be had. Disregard that balance and all you win is overspending while the top end of performance won't budge anyway. And if you're going to spend too much, the answer is simple: buy the fastest you can afford.

15-20% is not going to elevate any gaming rig from 'unplayable' to 'playable' nor is it enough to push your experience to a higher resolution like say 1080 > 1440p. 15-20% is little over twice what you get out of a regular GPU overclock. 15-20% is strictly in the realm of 'if you look for it, you might notice it'. The only point at which 15-20% matters is when your aim is 60 FPS minimums and you're now getting about 52-55 FPS minimums. That is NOT the OP's case.

OP wants to do high refresh gaming at 1440p. A 1070ti is not going to provide a wildly different experience from a 2060S. Its just not going to matter enough to even bother. If you still personally think its a good move in your specific situation, hey, by all means. But you'd still be better off pushing for something a bit more instead. And even more so by sitting and dealing with that 1070ti for a while longer. Its not like he can't game, right?

And yes, there is simply no question that going from a 1080 (equivalent) that costed 500 ish in 2016 to a 2060S that costs a mere 100 bucks less while giving only 18% perf is a ridiculous move. That means you have paid a net total of 900 (!!!) bucks to end up with performance that still sits BELOW A 2070S. So looking back... you might as well have bought a 1080ti at 700 MSRP back then. See how there is no opinion involved? Its just math.

thats why i said look at open box, maybe not microcenter (didnt see the location post),
but amazon should be available, maybe a local shop.
my 2080S (FTW hybrid) was 650$, and a good deal, unless the 3070 will be significantly faster on air and less than 500.

Just to update my thread to say that I've ordered a RTX2070 Super a Founder's Edition from Nvidia that I should get tomorrow. With the FE ? Well I love the look of it, and seeing how things go because of a certain virus, I've already seen prices rising up for gpus so it was maybe a good time to get one.

Hi folks !

I currently have a PC with a i7 7700k 5ghz and a gtx 1070ti. I'm thinking about upgrading but is it a good time to do so ?
Any idea when new GPUs will be released ?
I'm leaning toward a rtx 2070 Aorus, a more expensive GPU but looks awesome and has very high oc out of the box.

Another question, I have a 560w seasonic x560, should I change to a more powerful one ?

Thanks !
The question that has been asked since the 1st GFX card was made has no answer. It's a crapshoot... however some things remain constant.

1. If you satisfied with last gen stuff, best time to buy **with warranty** is at least after the next gen is announced.

2. Never buy next gen as soon as they go on sale ... prices will be higher as demand exceeds supply, b) the "I gotta be the 1st one on my block to have the new shiny thing" crowd will keep prices high even after supply starts to catch up w/ demand c) and this is most important ... 1st stepping stuff has bugs, imperfections and problems that 2nd steppings will have cured. With 2nd stepping you get to skip

EVGA SC s 570 here VRMs went up in smoke
EVGA SCs 970 where 1/3 of the heat sink missed the GPU
EVGAs 1060 - 1060 SC and FTW series where they cheaped out and skipped the thermal pads and VRMs again smoked
MSIs tape to keep the fans still during shipping, the adhesive was so strong some users broke their cards.

In the last 2 instances everybody who asked was made good, but still who wants the hassle ?

3. As for which 2070 ... thru the 7xx series, Asus usually was top dog ... since then, for the most part, it's been MSI. ZFor the 2070, I recall MSI posting the best OCd fps numbers in TPU testing. Note that highest clocks more often that not, dontt score the highest fps

4. There will likely be an announcement or presentation of some sort at GTC later this month ... but I don't expect a release till the fall holiday season

650 is still steep especially for a mid tier card.

I wont pay the greengreed tax

Agree 100%. 2080 and up are way out of the comfort zone. And bad perf dollar too, even at 650 its not really that great at all. Its kinda the same sentiment as 'don't pre order'... we have a collective task here in that sense to show company where the limit is at.

@keveuh a wise choice IMO. The FE wasn't a necessary move but at least Turing's FE's are decent anyway, and no blower! Enjoy!

Well spoken sir. 'Made good' in my book is insta return to seller and full refund, and avoiding the brand at least for one full gen altogether. The whole business with removing a cooler to place thermal pads yourself on a product like this is beyond ridiculous. My Pascal FTW went straight back. I've not done such a thing and will never do it. If you have this sort of problem with 400-500 dollar products you don't deserve business IMO. The same goes for just reusing coolers on dies that don't even properly fit (Heatpipes missing the die, bad contact)... the list is actually quite long. :D

Rant over :)

Says the person who doesn't have one. I can say with complete confidence that my EVGA 2080BE was a solid good value for the money. The perspective you've stated is purely opinion, just like mine. The difference is, I have one and can speak from experience.

The purchase time is based on Amazon's price fluctuations, but it is a little caution, but if the store is officially announced a new GPU, it will try to reduce the in-store inventory at a cheap price for arrival. The timing of purchase comes unexpectedly early. Note that this is easy to overlook. If you can't buy it when you need it, you're in hell! It is also important to determine whether you really need it.

Personally, a GPU of 2080 or more is perfect for those who want the highest image quality, frame rate and resolution, but it is very costly. There are not many such titles. Think of it as a contributor to YouTube benchmarks or for some enthusiasts or athletes.

all my card since gtx500 have been from 1st stepping, sometimes even multiple cards of the same gen/chip (but different brands),
and usually 1-5 cards/year, yet ZERO of the probs you mentioned.
and brands incl zotac/pny/msi/asus/evga/gigabyte, but since they had the best air cooled cards, mainly msi since gtx9xx series.

@eidairaman1
mid tier card? mmmh, ok if that's what you want to call the 2nd fastest single chip gpu on the market.

since amd is doing mid -tier, what do they have that can level with it in perf?
right.

Over 500 for any gaming gpu is ridiculous for price.

tru, but doesnt diminish the product performance or determine its value,
as that is mainly based on income/budget.

just because i don't have the money to have a +200K/+200mph 2 door car,
doesn't mean i will complain about its price/value, or sour it for the ppl that have the funds to buy/own it.

e.g., from all in this forum that say bad value/overpriced etc, would NOT buy one, if they had +1 million USD in their savings account?

nope.
all past shelter/food and basics like tv/internet, EVERYTHING else is what we WANT, NOT need.
as in "optional". we either have the funds for something, or we dont.
still doesnt change the facts on the product, no matter if we can buy it or not.

nope.
all past shelter/food and basics like tv/internet, EVERYTHING else is what we WANT, NOT need.
as in "optional". we either have the funds for something, or we dont.
still doesnt change the facts on the product, no matter if we can buy it or not.
Considering in 2014 i took part of a check each month to buy a part, the gpu at the time being $460.

And Nv inflates pricing.

Never claimed the opposite, yet still doesn't mean i wont recommend a part just because the
part costs more than im willing to pay/think it is worth, as im not the one paying for it.
