i like the fakey finish AMD puts on the top of there CPU's, plus i was never good in woodshop class...

Lapping is super easy, it just takes physical endurance to sand for 1-2 hours. Get a graphite slab or a glass surface, tape some find sandpaper to it, and away you go. You might want to add water for a better surface and easier sanding.

Oh yes, you won't believe what some of the people on TPU will go to, to get that 1-2 degrees celcius drop on there temps.

But to answer your question, i have seen people get about a 6c drop before, depends on who's doing it, how well they did it, and what cooler they're using

It depends on the surfaces... lapping both the processor and the heatsink can have great results if the surfaces were bad enough.

I've lapped a few things myself... never saw a spectacular difference, but there is a difference.

I practiced on my stock am3 heatsink and it worked great. also did it to one of my h50, but it was a pain with the hose still attached. Dropped temp maybe 3 deg compared to the one that is stock.

Magic, I guess... didn't even change voltages for anything except the memory (2.15v from 2v stock).

The real problem with my board lies with the 95w limit... if it wasn't for that, I bet I could get more out of it.

Best tip is not to do this...very hard to explain to Intel or AMD if rma is ever needed.

What was acually gained from the couple of degrees reduction in temps?

I have lapped two CPU's first one was an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ BE and my current CPU. The 6400+ I gained a lot of headroom for over clocking lowered my temps -6C. My Phenom II lapping it didn't lower my temps much. I would only do it if you are not worried about killing the chip. Since like a few here have stated you void your warranty.

CPU's come with warranties? hehehe Most people have a time frame in which they must reach before lapping there processor or attempt to lap it. I guess the most popular one is when there warranty expires, but for me I put it in the MB long enough to ensure it’s not defective. So, by the end of the day of receiving it I’m lapping it..lol

I do have to point out that newer pinless intel processors are easier to lap than AMD processors. Not to say it’s difficult to lap AMD processors. You just need to be a little more careful. I say do what you feel comfortable doing. Just remember it’s not hard, just time consuming (your arms can get a little tired…lol). Good luck and if you need any help you can pm me.
