Got carried away attempting to make my icons look cool and now all my .exe files are the same icon. Did it through files type manager properties.

Hey all,

First time poster here. Thanks for having me. I am hoping to start off by explaining how I have royally displeased myself by accidentally changing all my .exe files to the same icon in FilesTypeManager.

I was able to easily change most of my other folder icons and other computer folders etc but changing .exe was proving beyond my current skillset. Non the less; like a kid taking apart his first bike, I attempted the task.

As a result, now all of my .exe files have become a figure of a beer bong when I just wanted to change that one program that was annoying me on my desktop - can't even remember what it was now because this issue has now become priority.

I attempted a system restore but the problem went away for a few minutes and then came back mysteriously.

I'm running windows 10.

If anyone is able to help guide me on steps to restore the original icons for all my exe files that would be so kind. Extra kudos if you can explain how to change a single .exe icon in window 10.

Thank you all.

Note, as stated on that page, rebuilding the icon cache will "NOT" help when "All icons for a specific file extension display the wrong icon". But in that same section, it points you to this tutorial that may help: How to Restore Default Apps for File Type Associations in Windows 10.

Thanks for the reply. I have definitely done something wrong. I realised later that the easy way is to make shortcuts of my .exe files and change my icons on those shortcuts. I seem to be experiencing icon issues now. They keep changing and disrupting. I will attempt to restore default app for file type associations as recommended. Thanks guys - no doubt I may be back.
