Hello!

I have a thing that I need confirmation on.

The story goes as follows: I have Gigabyte GTX1070 G1 Gaming Rock, Ryzen 5 1600 on Stock speeds, 16GB RAM and PSU Tacens Valeo V 700W.

Unfortunetly, I have lost PCI-E cable that connects from PSU to 8-pin slot (PSU has only 6 pin connectors!). I had to use as temporary double molex to 8pin adapter that came with card to power it up.

So I went on about testing the graphics card as is leaving it on stock/gaming mode in AORUS software. Problem is, Witcher 3 immidiately after loading in game (into free roam), crashes GPU, causing screen to go black and fans speed up to 100%.

I have underclocked it by 200Mhz and issue got fixed. HOWEVER, when playing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the GPU seemingly crashes as well with underclock on ultra details, spinning fans up to 100%. Seems like with these two, driver resets, but GPU doesn't recover.

Now my question is:

Will replacing my PSU to new one (I have around 110 dollars) fix the crashing issue? Could it really be the Molex adapter that crashes GPU due to insufficient power? Cables don't get hot, I keep monitoring it.

What would be good PSU for this price?

Don't do that.

I know technically that is supposed to work but if your PSU does not have the corresponding cable that's a red flag that you shouldn't use the card with it.

Ah yes, I was asking just that. So the card has no 8pin connector, just 6-pin.

Changing PSU will resolve that problem with crashing and fans, yes?

I don't know of any 1070 that has a 6-pin. They should all have at least 1x8pin.

I don't know if it will fix it but it does seem to be power related. The point is, never use molex adapters for PCIe.

Will 600W power supply work in this situation?

If it won't be resolved by changing PSU, then I suppose I'll RMA the card.

This likely doesn't have anything to do with the wattage, for that system even 450W from a good PSU will be fine.

Then I will get a 600W power supply to have headroom. I knew that using adapters was bad but since I have no intergrated GFX card, I had to power it up somehow.

I was curious about it since I had no other way to power it up. I feel stupid now.

Make sure you get 2x8 pin PCIE at the very least.

Tell me, is it possible that this adapter/PSU is causing this issue?

Its possible, but many things are possible... there is one certainty and that is that your current PSU isn't suited for a hungry GPU, its recommended to replace it anyway.

BUT... its still nice to pinpoint the cause, go by process of elimination for that. When you have the new PSU, you can confirm if it wasn't the GPU.

At ~100 bucks I'd recommend an EVGA Supernova.

Is XFX good too? I was considering EVGA.

List of brands I consider:
Corsair
XFX
Seasonic
beQuiet!
Thermaltake
Zalman
SilverStone
CoolerMaster
Chieftec

Which of them is best for this price? Must be EVGA?

More important than the sticker on the box is what the OEM is on the inside and the platform used. A Corsair PSU can be anything from total shit to fantastic.

Seasonic is a safer choice, its one of the top OEMs, and Superflower as well - the latter is found inside EVGA Supernovas. Bonus points for having an ECO mode that turns the fan off at lower temps (if you oversize your PSU, it'll be off most of the time). PSU fans can be quite audible and are often overlooked.

I want to get Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 550W.

That enough for my PC?

Enough- certainly. But a Gold PSU will also do fine. Platinum has a pretty hefty price premium and at low wattage, you'll never earn back the additional power it saves. (a few % efficiency)

I believe a 8 pin pcie power cable consists of:

3xGND wires
1xGND Sense wire
3x+12V wires
1x+12V sense wire

1 molex consits of:

1x+5V wire
2xGND wires
1x+12V wire

And the molex to 8pin pcie adapters I have seen only use 2 molex's. So you might get enough GND, but only 2x+12V wires from the PSU (missing 1) and no sense wires which might be the most important part (?). So, no, it wouldn't surprise me if this is the source of your problems

Since youre running a Ryzen, the issue could be memory related. You cant just pick up any ram, toss it in and have it working perfectly. If this PSU doesnt fix your issue, I suggest going to your board manufacturers website, checking out the QVL list and buying a ram kit from that list.

I had an almost similar issue when building an R5 2600 system not so long ago and buying from that list solved my issue.

It's not RAM, I've used this PC before with GTX1050Ti that had no PCI-E cable attached to it and it ran just fine.
