the oil will end up dripping and could cause an eletrical short, killing something.

just replace the fan with any old fan. as long as air blows over the cards its fine for a cheap fix.

I agree with your ultimate solution of using an alternative fan.

However, since when will oil cause an electrical short? People have immersed their entire PCs in cooking oil without electrical issues. Oil cannot dissolve the free ions that would cause electrical shorts.

The main problem is that the cooking oil becomes rancid after a while, and that may occur in the bearings of the fan leading to a rotten PC. Certain cooking oils are also acidic and attack plastics over long time periods. However, but electrical shorts are unheard of with oils.

Little enough that I would start saving my pennies now... If you really like the card, some people have had good luck baking them in an oven (after removing plastic shrouds) to tighten up the solder joints after it starts showing artifacts or otherwise failing. Buying at newegg is impossible as I'm not from US, I can buy at amazon (Only if I can't really find it here, as import taxes in my country for individuals are so violent that will more than double the price of the item (e.g.: item costs $20, I will pay ~$50. And that's because amazon shipping is quite cheap, it could be worse as the calculation of taxes includes shipping price)).

I never had any problems with artifacts with this card. It is working perfectly well.

I've put a new fan. I removed it from a non-working PSU I have here.

The GPU is much cooler now. I just hope it doesn't fall off, otherwise my motherboard can be damaged permanently as the wires have exposed parts.

Great budget solution! I hope your card lasts a long time. Apparently the cooking oil fix is not viable for long! But I'm a firm believer in using whatever ghetto mods are necessary to keep old hardware running way past it's life expectancy, and you've certainly achieved that...

My 9500GT is still here, I got some problems while trying to fit in my new system (the cooler was touching the sound card), but it is solved already:

Haha, I think it is 1mm or less from touching the sound card. Very, very close.

I tried to use the Intel HD Graphics but it failed to satisfy my 'basic' requirements (not to mention some annoying behaviors).

Idle temperature is 53ºC (at 26ºC ambient temperature). Load temperature is approximately 63-68ºC.

What?! That is nearly the same temperature I got when I bought this card in January 2009.

The ambient temperature here is very hot. And it doesn't help to keep it colder than that.

i use the stock cooler. didnt do anything.

thats why i'm saying your card runs hot - yes you have a fan on it now (which is great) but something else is keeping it running hot. may need new thermal paste, or maybe the fans blocked by the soundcard and not getting enough air.

It always kept at those temperatures when I had all PCI slots free...

I think its temperature is normal, not as cool as more modern GPUs but still very far from 90 or 105ºC, which I believe to be enough!
