Its possible that one of their fans had a blowout and was replaced... but its its on the fan blades...

I would reach out to ASUS and see what they say about it.

Well ... I ran it for about 2mins ... I opend up GPUz and checked the fan Senors.... Fan speed % showed 0 and RPM showed zero... shut it down and took it out ...

Now I am pissed.

I have/had 2x 780tis one died and it took them about 11 days too msg after they had it ...saying they could not repair it and wanted too replace it with A 980strix ... I told them about my SLI setup and how that would be A issue for me ... I run 5760x1080p. and ask if they could do something with my other 780ti so it would match ......took another 7 days or so but they agreed to let me RMA my 2nd 780 ti and would replace it too with A 980 stirx. The first RMA replacement showed up today and if all was well I was going too ship my 2nd 780ti back to them in the box this one came in. But I cant ship out my only working GPU (fallout 4 / Disabled and bored with out A GPU) ,,, this is turning into A mess ... and I was so happy they were going too replace both of them now.... happiness is turning into anger.

Wow, they seem generous on the one side and on the other sent you a faulty card. I think that oil stuff is from the fan itself, maybe it's oil for the fan, but it's (still) not working(?). Strange. I'd keep the 780 Ti until they replaced that crap, if I were you.

Yea that's the only thing I can do at this point ... I am so bored lately ... been waiting for fallout 4 (just like everyone else ) .... I assume it will take 2days or so for them to reply to me ... Just wish you could call them ... when you call asus you get A call center overseas and they dont know jack. I also don't think I should have pay to send this card back to them ... thats going too be A issue. Man, I was so happy with them too for taking care of me on the other card .... not sure how to feel now ... LOL

No you shouldn't pay for it. Just wait for them to answer but insist that you keep your 780 Ti, until you have a working replacement.

just ignore this if it's not of consequence, but i thought it might be worth mentioning, I've had Fan, or Shroud only issues in the past (not with Asus) and had AIB's just send Me out the shroud pretty quickly (a day or 2 shipping wait, with proof of course that im a customer). might work for you, but Im taking the liberty of assuming that the Card itself is in good condition.

but to be on the safe side, RMA is a good idea. I simply meant if you Really wanted it back up and running now, and weren't interested in waiting any longer.
good luck

umm... doesn't the 980 strix have zero fan up to 60c? Meaning the fans are off until the temp hits 60c?

Play something and let it reach at least 60c and see if the fans spin up then.

I've had oil on the tips of fan blades and on the inner side of the fan case. Sleeve bearing fans that I've re-lubricated using to "thin" oil for the temperature that started slipping out of the bearing chamber due to centrifugal force and heat.

Don't know what bearings Strix 980 is using but I doubt they are sleeve bearing. Most likely ball bearing.

Inspect the undeside of the fans if you can, if the fans have greasy undersides of the blades, then it might be from the bearings, though I find it very unlikely.

It should power the fans on momentarily while it does a self-check. This should happen when the PC is first turned on.

Did you clean the drivers off of the PC and reinstall them with the new GPUs?

What were the temps? Do you have msi ab startup with a fan profile or something?

Truth be told I did not even look at temps ... went str8 for fan info, assuming something was wrong (leak). When I saw nothing reading on GPUz .. i just shut it down. However I was not aware about them not starting up till under load. Maybe they were still spinning from the boot. Naw I have no profiles setup or anything really installed right now ... Just reinstalled windows the other day... was waiting on this gpu before I started adding in more software.

One of the main things that scare me about this oil ...
I have A Asrock Extreme 9. I just got the new Samsung 950pro and the X4 M.2 slot is right under the main PCIe 16 slot....

EDIT: When I say nothing on GPUz/ only referring to fan info .. everything else was working .. the red graphs even started to show ... but did not really take A look at them

Soooo.... turn it on again, but this time give it some time and keep an eye on the temps.

Make sure you reinstalled the driver following the DDU method above.

Oil is non conductive nothing to worry about.

Some 980 card fans stay off until a certain temp is reached.

Naw , I did not as soon As I started up the comp ... the nvidia control panel /.windows found new hardware and ask me to restart comp ... this only took 20 seconds or so ... when windows booted up I clicked on GPUz ... GPUz was running before my ethernet/network could even come on ... saw it read the 980 and switched tabs too look at fan info .... saw zeros in both slots .. looked in case (is caselabs M8 so they are on the side just have too look over ... they were spinning ... seemed fast .... so I shut it down ... and went too look if saw more oil .... and just took it out at that piont.

DDU

This will clean the old driver from your PC. You want to do this, it is a good thing to do when you put in new cards.
Uninstall your drivers and shut down. Have the latest driver handy to install when you reboot.

Then check back with us.

Ok ... did all that ... DDU/safemode uninstall ... installed 980 drivers .. ran unigine heaven with GPUz open ... and
Fan sensors worked. Also the Fans (both) did stop. After getting drivers installed I waited A min or so before I look and tested anything .. they were not moving and GPUz showed zeros . Running UH they did kick in and GPUz showed them working.

If you want to, you could probably override the auto on/off actions of the fan, but why defeat something that's baked into your new card? It's a power saving feature.
