GPU throttling issue

Hello,

I have an amd gigabyte HD5770 which sits at 400mhz idle. It does not go to it's max 850mhz when using MPC HC (with madvr) even though the activity is at 98%(but still at 400mhz). There is a boost of quality when gpu sits at 850mhz (with mpc hc).
It does go to 850mhz when using other software (games, benchmark, etc), but not MPC HC.

I can set the clock to 850 with amd gpu clock tool, but I have to do this on each powerup.
The rest of the config: g4560, msi h110m, 16gb ddr4, ssd, 620w psu, win7, latest drivers (crimson 2016.0226.1531.27895 for amd).

The windows power settings ar set to high, everyting sleep mode is disabled or high power - in advanced power settings the Multimedia settings- When sharing media is : Prevent idling to sleep, and When playing video is Optimize video quality

I noticed that when in idle the voltage sits at 1.0, and when it's in load it goes at 1.125. If I set the voltage at 1.125 via the AMD GPU clock tool (when in idle), the gpu core does not change, neither does the voltage.

I tried MSI afterbuner, I loaded the profile and it only went to 850mhz for about 2 seconds.

I also tried the steps is these threads, still the same:

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/89360-cant-adjust-gpu-voltage-msi-afterburner/#comment-1207583

How can I set the gpu clock to remain at 850mhz all the time? (i tried to reinstall driver, same issue, latest driver).

What Power profile are you using in Windows..... is it set to performance? The 850Mhz clock you refer to is the "load" 3D clock, most cards these days have 3 or 4 profiles but it should remain at 850mhz whenever gaming hence why I mention your windows power profile.

That won't do anything.

@Tatty_One, the plan is High Performance, and I disabled any sleep mode, put everything on high performance.
I know cards have this feature, however it does not allow MPC HC to ramp it up to 850mhz.

MPC-HC is a 2D application. 3D clocks aren't required to run it. Hence the behavior you're witnessing is completely normal. Aside from the perceived boost of quality when running it with forced 3D clocks. Which I believe is imaginary. The boost of quality part that is.

@MrGenius, it's 100% not imaginary, madvr has some settings which require high end cards, look it up. I am waiting for the prices to drop so I can get a gtx1060 or something like that.

So how do I make the software to recognize it as a high demand task?

  • MPC-HC 1.7.13.112

I'll get the update, the problem is that new cards have the same standby states with lower frequency (I saw an gtx1070 with 300mhz idle). Not sure what the problem is, did not see any posts complaining about this issues from other people who use this kind of setup, must be something from my config, maybe I should upgrade to win10?

chix_AHOY, I just installed the crimson drivers today, I used an older driver, then updated to the legacy drivers, then crimson, no diference.

Man new members or neverheard of names coming out of the woodwork suddenly.

Go to AMD and download the last compatible driver for that gpu.
Download the latest compatible chipset driver for your motherboard from intel. Download DDU, disconnect your ethernet cord or disable the wifi adapter. Run and Follow the directions of ddu correctly. After that install your motherboard chipset drivers and then install the last compatible driver for that GPU, reconnect your ethernet or wifi adapter.

Is it not possible to do a simple P state edit to fix this?

Have no experience with pre-GCN AMD cards so just guessing

considering driver support had been discontinued for anything older than a 7000 series, no. He needs to get the correct drivers

I used the DDU software to no avail. I even tried to install just the driver (without CCC), the gpu stayed at 400mhz idle during playback. Tried with an older driver, and the latest compatile one(also got the one from gigabyte's site).
Added mpc hc to 3d applications in CCC (pic), change some settings, but the gpu did not budge when using the software. Also changed the exe to run as admin, tried all the settings there, nothing changed.

I noticed that machines with 2 cards(crossfire/sli or integrated + dedicated) have an option in CCC called Power, which you can set the performance, but I cannot find it in my menu: http://imgur.com/FDZ9xSW , and can't install the integrated graphics since the system board drivers only work for windows 10.

Anybody?

After some more testing I noticed that the system does go to 850mhz when playing HVEC/x265 files, but not x264.

It seems to work fine now with the following versions:

MPC-HC 1.7.13.112
MadVR 0.92.10
