Gpu Upgrade 67xx or 68xx ?

Bearing in mind my current system specs which i know the cpu will be the bottleneck.
I need to replace the GPU because its dieing and its getting to the point where i cant play games with consistent framerates.

I'm looking to spend 150~200 $ or less, I don't need a killer card to run everything at uber settings and seeing how the cpu is going to limit my ability to MAX games
I just want a decent card that can play BC2 TW2 BF3 etc at playable framerates without butchering the gfx.

With all that in mind i was looking at the 67xx/68xx cards wondering if the cheaper of the bunch would be up to snuff or should I spend more and get a 6850 or 6870.

i will probly get shot down here, but if you are only planing on running one card. i would go with a 5870 for the price range, and you would get decent performance

definitely 6850,,, my 5850 is such a beast playing games at 1000mhz gpu,,, custom air cooler but u get the point of its potential.. get nothing less,,it will last longer ,,, and when in future u upgrade to quad core it will seem even faster

Edit scratch that 6850 for the price this, and it blows air out of the case which I need.

I think 6790 is a failed 6870 with disabled features for like $60 less, there is a slight possibility of it unlocking to 6870 but don't have all your faith in it.

6770 is even worse than 5770 so don't bother.

Last time I checked 5870 was $250 + if you can find one. The 6870 is not as fast but a good card. And under $200. I just ordered one $180 after rebate. Going from a 9800GTX your not going want a 6770

The 6870 is awesome, XFX has an excellent replacement record, and the cost after rebate is about $165. There is no reason to spend slightly less and get significantly less performance.

Pull the trigger now, and start enjoying better visuals in three days or less.

I have the the XFX HD 6870 and love it! Old card was a GTX 460, but was having a lot of issues with it. But it was a nice upgrade

I'm going to agree here. I found a 5970 on craigslist for $275 last week. Needless to say I bought it, and now I'm reselling it.

You can find AWESOME deals on 5k series cards, but if you just want something that is 2nd gen dx11 go with the 6870 and crossfire another later. The scaling is amazing, but like you said your CPU may be a serious limiting factor.

I'm a little shocked that's what a 6870 scored. Is that stock settings? My 6950 unlocked doubles that score. It might help that my processor is much faster though.

Yea now i see the cpu taking a full load instead of the gpu before in bc2 i averaged 80% utilization
now that the gfx card isnt holding anything back the cpu is pegged

He is scoring right on par for a e8400 with 4Gb of ram.


Either way the 6870 was a good move and will be really good when you decide to crossfire a new one, because the 6xxx series scales better then the 5xxx series. So you have a pretty good upgrade path.

I would say Buy a 6870 or a 6850. The 6870 will perform better stock... but if you like to overclock you will be able to match the 6870 performance and get allot more overclocking fun out of a 6850

thats a big boost,, good thing that it exhausts air too,, do a little overclock and run benchmark again :0)
