GPU upgrade pickle

Well currently I still have my MSI HD 7850 and I would like to upgrade it. I have a Cooler master 430W psu.
At first I thought I can pick up a RX 480 and it would be a significant upgrade plus it uses a single 6 pin just as my old card but the RX 480 cant be connected to my monitor which has only VGA.
Then I was hoping the GTX 1060 could be an option too until I found out I connect my monitor to it either.

What GPU should I get? Hopefully without having to upgrade the PSU and monitor too.

IF the new gpu has a DVI, nowadays it's DVI-D ,only digital, he needs DVI-I, analoque.

If it does have HDMI then it shouldn't be a problem to upgrade the card only.

With either, if you only have a VGA as input your going to have to use a DP - VGA adapter. That is probably going to be your only bet with either of the cards other than buying a new monitor.

I agree that you should shop around for a new monitor that supports a digital input first. Otherwise, you won't really be taking advantage of the superior capabilities of a new card anyway.

You did not specify the exact model number of your CM 430W PSU but if this one, I would not use it on a new card. It was not of very good quality to begin with. It has poor efficiency and because it is not 80 PLUS certified, it does not have a relatively flat (consistent) efficiency across the full range of expected loads computers regularly put on power supplies.

Therefore, I would recommend you replace the PSU when you upgrade your card (pick card first, then a supply that supports the card and the rest of your computer).

Do note that many if not most TVs sold in recent years have multiple digital inputs including support for computers too. If you have such a TV, you can hold off upgrading your monitor - for now.

Although I don't like that PSU, it's not that bad. The 7870 that he has is a ~130 watt GPU whereas the GTX 950 is a ~100 watt GPU. Should not be a problem. The PSU would be the third item on my list to replace.

The OP said 430 but either way, the specs of the 460W are no better. It has poor efficiency and is not 80 PLUS certified so it does not have a relatively flat (consistent) efficiency across the variety of expected loads.

I think I might have to agree with @Bill_Bright that I have to change my monitor first.
Then the power supply, and only then think about a new card.

DVI to VGA ADAPTERS DO NOT WORK WITH RX480 or Gforce 10xx CARDS

The cards themselves do not send any analog signals to the DVI ports like older cards did so you need an DP to VGA dongle or a new monitor.

use them at work all the time and ship out our appliances to customers with them since dsub is still king in the server room.

7$ is much cheaper than a monitor. lol Then the OP can go 1060.

Find the card you want first, then buy your new PSU to support it. Then buy the card (or buy new card and new PSU at the same time).

If you buy a new PSU first, you have to buy it big enough to ensure it supports any card you later choose and may end up buying a PSU that is way too big (wasting your money). Or you may buy one that is still too small and need to buy another PSU (again wasting money).

Well I have this monitor since 2010 or before so I have been wanting to go bigger lately. Maybe a 27" or 29".

Not too sure about the brand but with a 3 year warranty I cant complain.
And YES I do plan on staying with 1080p. 1440 and 4K are still too expensive in my country + as I'm getting older I don't see that much detail anyway.

Hey Devon68... I hope you didn't buy that Cooler Master on ebay. IIRC, many years ago I advertised a pretty decent SuperFlower based Kingwin unit on ebay. We had an incident though where I sold that unit to a friend before consulting the ebay listing, and substituted the buyer in question a Cooler Master in it's place that was "value equivalent"

Now a days I know there is a lot more to a PSU than it's MSRP, and I would've never made that kind of exchange to a modern customer. If you happen to be said party (who I never could get a hold of), let me de-guilttrip myself and buy you a new PSU.

PS: I realize this is unlikely, but as I doubt many 430W (odd wattage) cooler master PSUs go around, I thought I would ask.

EDIT: By the way you said "my country" and the fact that I don't do international sales outside Canada and the USA, I doubt you are said party. Darn. Been looking for him to do the right thing for years now... his ebay account doesn't reply.
