Hi, I'm a first time builder and am a hardcore Gamer. Im 16 and am looking to build my first computer. I'v been doing alot of research and cant figure out what i should do. Iv got the base of what i want in my computer, but i cant figure out what graphics card brand i should go with. im looking to play games like witcher 3 at almost max graphics at 1080p at a steady 60 fps.

You don't choose brands, you choose cards based on budget and features. That being said, what's your budget for the graphics card?

More likely then not, it will affect prices of already-on-the-market cards: that alone is worth the wait, no?

Just get a Gtx980, and if you can spare it, a 1440p monitor instead of 1080p. Could easily fit that in going down to lga 1150 and getting a 4690/4790k.

EDIT: Though I would probably go for 970 Sli with 4690k and 1440p monitor if you are wanting 60+ fps in Witcher 3.

What bad reviews? The VRAM split bug? That is a non issue in real world, and especially with Witcher when it barely breaks 2gb VRAM usage. Gtx970 is the best bang for the buck option right now.

I'd hold off for the 980ti. I have been very happy with my 780ti for quite a while, gaming at 1600p.

I would hold out to see what the 980Ti and R9 390X brings to the table and their prices but if you had to buy a card now I would get the R9 295x2 since it's the best card on the market at the moment and you can find it for as low as $600.

And also with the new DX12 you will soon be able to stack Vram in dual setups so the 3.5GB in a 970 Sli won't be a problem and the R9 295x2 will have true 8GB Vram.

The 970 Sli is still a great option, you shouldn't hit the Vram threshold unless you're using a ton of extra textures that are unnecessary for most games.
And btw you don't need that particular CPU just for gaming. I would go with a lower budget build like an i5 so that you can spend more money on the GPU and cooler.

It is an awesome choice. All the VRAM stuff really amounts to nothing. All the reviews say 970 SLI is great for even 4K.

Also, I wouldn't expect prices on current cards to drop all that much. The 980 might come down if AMD put something out that competes with it. Otherwise the 390X and 980Ti are both going to be placed above the 980 and priced above the 980, so prices on lower cards won't be affected.

If you are definitely going with 1080p, I'd pick up a single 970 now and then grab another down the road once prices actually do go down a little. A single 970 can easily handle 1080p.

Yes it is!! Preparing for the future is futile. Advances are always going to be made. My advice is really, gpu's are really only a 2 year item. With them, it's more about staying current. Anything else is nigh-impossible.

There are plenty of people on here with GTX970's.

The ram issue is a non issue. You just make sure your not saturating the GPU memory and even when you do it's generally the performance drop from the resolution and features you've turned on that you notice.

For 1080p gaming the 970 will be fine for it's lifetime. In 2-3 years when you come to upgrade again then the market will have changed as well. 4K monitors will be cheaper, And games companies will be making the most out of DX12 on windows 10.

I would not want to SLI them as that adds to your commitment in terms of time to the card. SLI'd 970's would be a 4 year replacement schedule for me, but the single on at 2 years is within expectations. 980's fall outside of the price to performance bracket that means your getting the absolute most for you money so I would avoid those as well. The 980ti is an unknown atm so that card cannot be commented on.

I would also rather have a single 970 over 960's in SLI. The single 970 is overall more powerful and less prone to having driver issues as it's a single card solution.

There are other options from AMD that do make sense. The r9 290x is currencly cheaper than the 970 and offers similar performance. Those cards are soon to be replaced by a new chip so your looking at the right time but it'll be a case of watching the news and attempting to make the best out of the information available when your ready to pull the trigger.

One question about your build. Is there and reason you have gone for the socket 2011 setup?? Most gamers are on K series i5/i7 1150 systems and have no problems running games with those. To the point where people on the older socket 1155 chips are still happily using them as the market for CPU advancement is almost stagnant and has been that way for a number of years.. Have you made an educated choice or are you just trying to get the most out of a specific budget?

You don't need an i7 for gaming especially an i7 extreme, Theres no point in overloading a build on a cpu when it's unnesscecary and the money could be spent more on the graphics card etc. Even if you really wanted an i7 don't get that i7 extreme as that's just complete overkill just for gaming and won't actually improve any performance.

They recommend an i7 from the last generation though. Games really don't use more then 4 cores. So you'll really see no difference between an i5-4690K and the i7-5820K. However, the i7-5820K ends up costing you a lot more, not just because of the cost of the CPU but because of the cost of the x99 platform as well. Even if you want to stick with an i7, you can save a lot of money just by dropping down to an i7-4790K. The z97 motherboard are cheaper and the DDR3 RAM is cheaper.

4790K = $330
16GB DDR3 = $115
Z97 Extreme4 = $134

That is over $100 saved for no gaming performance loss. Actually you might have better gaming performance because you'll probably be able to clock the 4790k higher than you would the 5820k.

And it will give you same performance gaming performance and better CPU temperature performance, X99 platfrom(which is what you chose) requires DDR4 memory which is expensive and all X99 motherboards are high end expensive aswell. X99 is only needed for more CPU and memory intensive use. Gaming requires a lot less than you think.

I've done a direct comparisons of gaming performance on an i5 2500k and an i7 5960x, both heavily overclocked using a pair of GTX 980's. The difference was pretty much zero. Better off spending more on the GPU front than the CPU.

If it were me and I wanted to game in teh meantime I would pick up a used 290 or 280X and use it for the next month while I waited for 980Ti or 390X to drop and then see what the market looks like, your are buying used, and your market loss will be maybe 20% when you resell the card, but

290 for $200

780 http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/2x-gtx780-250-each-or-475-for-both.212296/ for $250

The 290 will give better overall performance than the 780 depending on title, but either are good cards, and should resell for for close to what you will pay.
