I never knew of one, so if somebody has one id like to know too. Id say in Crysis running SLI with full blown settings and AA my CPU is prolly using 2 cores, all of first GPU and maybe half of second if scaling is that good.

Your CPU usage is nearly identical to mine. Glad to know my PC isn't glitching or something lol. I guess that also means that a Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz will perform MUCH better than my Phenom 9600 2.3GHz, correct? Even without doing an OC to 4GHz (on the 965)?

.

Dude, seems everyone here is telling u to BUY BUY BUY. But have u seen that PPMcGUIRE's set-up? Have u spotted that he is running a I5 Quad Core at 4.2GHz. Do u realise that this CPU blows any Phenom (OCd or not) right out the water? His GFX Sli set-up is also hugely overpowerd as well. But look, he still only gets around 30FPS in the Benchmark. It is a poorly optimsed game, and no monster of a rig is going to pull it up of its knees for the next while at least anyhow.

I advise u again, dont go getting in a mad upgrade rush over just that one Game. The game itself is not worth it and unless you have $2000 to spare, then you WILL BE DISSAPOINTED.

Two questions today:

1. I have recently gotten Crysis, and have been having some major lag/fps issues (using the crysis benchmark tool 1.05 I get an average of 15~19 FPS). I don't know if it is my graphics card or something else that is the problem. If anyone knows how I can improve my performance please let me know.

2. If the above problem is because of my graphics card (specs below), what is the "best" (maybe under $250?) video card out there (ATI or nVidia) that can play Crysis (and other high-performance games)?

My system specs are:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
CPU: AMD Phenom 9600 2.3GHz
RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 8GB (4 x 2GB)
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTS 250 1GB
Motherboard: ASUS M4N72-E AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI ATX
PSU: OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W ATX12V / EPS12V
Monitor: ASUS VH242 24"
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932

That set up should run it fine. What resolution are you trying to run at ?
With my spec's I run it fine with no lag at 1440x900 maxed out setting. If I jump
to a higher rez it'll start hiccuping. I can even run it on the second gamer listed
below if I put everything on Minimum settings. Just keep toying with your settings.
Get the latest driver for your card too.

crysis dont care about cpu not at all. its purely graphics driven try comparing a dual to quad or even the same cpu at different mhz you will see not frame increase at all. that being said buy the fastest gpu you can afford and call it a day

Thanks for your concern, but since I started this post, I really have started watching my CPU usage ingame (was doing it once in a while before, but now looking ever few seconds on my second monitor). Running most of the current games I play (CoD4, AC, Crysis (the 3 out so far), and a few others, I have noticed my CPU usage was spiking/running quite badly/hot (even AC, which usually ran fine on WinXP Pro, is using MUCH more now that I am on Win7; close to 80~90% just running around). Maybe it is because of my recent switch to Win7, but these games are running 75~100% CPU during normal play, not combat.

This leads me to believe that while my Crysis gameplay might not increase as I hope, it should still help stabalize my system while running other games. I could be wrong, but my buddy has an almost identical system (mine is slightly better in some parts) except that he has a newer CPU (Phenom II something, not sure exactly) and he runs all of the games I play with no issues. If anyone has any thoughts on this please let me know.

Ok lemme put my old S939 rig back together with this 280 SLI setup and see if your statement still stands true. His CPU is a major bottleneck for Crysis. If i dropped my CPU speed to stock and left one video card in with a 1920x1200 res my FPS would be around 10 or lower. CPU plays a major role with Crysis.

Ive also made comments towards the previous rigs i had which where AMD. Im not really comparing to my i5 at all. Weve been telling him his video card is fine, but to buy a new CPU because that is the bottleneck of his machine. My dad plays Crysis fine on a 4850 and 940 at 3.8ghz. If i gave him a stock phenom 9850 his performance would drop drastically.

its your graphics card and cpu ;)
you should upgrade to a Phenom II 955 and a Radeon HD 5850 and you will notice the boost

the GTS 250 is OLD, heck its just a renamed 9800 GTX that is also a renamed 8800 GTX (2007)
and you also has a old cpu from 2007, then you have a 24" with 1920x1200 resolution that will make your graphics card scream

GTS250 = 8800GTX huh? I think not.

That being said...

You can play Crysis pretty well "actual play" at that res with that card, what you need is a new processor.

I play Crysis Wars all Very High with my 4850 @ 1920x1080 and hold a pretty steady high 20's fps, sometimes it jumps to around 40, never below about 26-27.

The benchmark for this game is pretty useless.

Yeah, it's actually faster in some apps possibly most since I'm not sure of the clock speed.

Anyone saying Crysis dosen't scale to your cpu needs to look at some benchs.

OP, if you aren't running a high res stick to your GTS250 for now it's a solid card.

I am planning to order the Phenom II X4 965 tonight or tomorrow from Newegg (if anyone knows of a better/cheaper place to buy it let me know).

If I decide I want to OC it or something, what would be a good choice for a CPU fan? I don't want to mess with water right now (cost mainly), so I am sticking with air. I have been looking at the Zalman CNPS9900 (I want the CNPS9900 NT, but I don't think it has been released yet), and also the Cooler Master Hyper Z600R/N620 (not sure if the Z600R is compatable with Phenom II X4?). I don't really know a whole lot about these (they have been recommended to me a few times though) except that they have high airflow (lol). If anyone knows of a good fan please let me know.

Also remember that I have the HAF 932, so should be able to fit most/all fan sizes (this case is HUGE). Thanks again.

*EDIT*
I have found the Zalman 9900 NT for sale, so I guess it is out :p

Uhh... Guess you didn't read that I am a noob :D.. lol. Wha do you mean by "stepping"?

Also, real quick. My motherboard supports up to 140watt CPU's, and I have a 700watt PSU. There is a 140watt and a 125watt version of the 965. Which should I get (does the difference in wattage have something to do with power consumption or OC capabilities? I ask because as far as I can tell the rest of the specs are identical).

That might be a stupid question, but I really don't know the difference, and don't want to overload my PSU and motherboard. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

*EDIT*
Does anyone know the max temp the 965 is supposed to run at? I used to have the page with the list bookmarked, but it got deleted when I upgraded to Win 7.

I mean the benchmark is very unreliable. It's about as useless as 3dmark when comparing cards speed, even in it's own game.

For instance, I have a E6500 4gb ram GTS250 512mb running Vista x64 in the shop right now, on Crysis is gets about 10-15fps through the benchmark, and in all reality it plays the game perfectly smooth all Very High, 1680x1050, I can't say the same for the benchmark.

Everything is stock clocks.

As for the cooler, get a Xigmatec :) They are elite, and you can't beat them for the price.
Phenom II chips clock well you can get a pretty decent overclock on it very easily and very safely.

The newer stepping is the 125w version. The "up to 140w" on your motherboard means it can take up to a 140w stock processor (the older 965). A 700w psu should be fine for what your doing.

As for air cooling, well getting into bigger coolers its a 50/50 game of whats cheaper these days. Here is a list of coolers that are pretty good and will OC a 965 good.

So do you recommend the 125 or 140 watt?

Either one will be fine. The 125w one will draw less power and run cooler but will be more expensive.

THe one at Frys could very well be 125 since the code is different.

Yes but for some reason, it doesn't match the code given by AMD.. Here is what I have found (very confusing):

AMD Compatable CPU List (for my motherboard) 125watt: HDZ965FBK4DGM
AMD Compatable CPU List (for my motherboard) 140watt: HDZ965FBK4DGI
Fry's 125watt: HDZ965FBGIBOX and HDZ965FBGMBOX (now why are there 2 different codes on Fry's for the "same thing"?)
Newegg's 140watt: HDZ965FBGIBOX

Why so many codes? The only ones that match are 1 from Fry's and 1 from Newegg... Does anyone know why this is?

*EDIT*
Okay. This is what I have found, for anyone who is interested. Although I don't know why AMD's CPU support list has different codes (I can't find any processors for sale that have matching codes), I have found which code applies to which CPU.

140watt=HDZ965FBGIBOX
125watt=HDZ965FBGMBOX

Those are the 2 codes used by every reseller I have found so far. So if you are going to buy the CPU, that should be the code you want to look for (some sites have the codes mixed, so be sure you ask them to check before you buy).

AM3 cpus is supported in AM2+ sockets, and ATI is best atm, AMD have DX11, HDMI bitsteaming audio support, Triple Display, the best image quality too! and so on 5850 and 5870 are the world fastest gpus atm

basicly
AM3 CPUs work in AM2+ (DDR2) or AM3 (DDR3)
check your motherboard page for BIOS

and ATI is win!
GTX 295 and 4870 X2 are both Dual GPU cards, 5850 and 5870 are both singel GPU

It's the Phenom 9600 CPU that is killing your FPS. Doesn't anyone remember the TLB bug?
