Graphics Cards are pretty pathetic at the moment!

Ok, I got your attention with the title, but hear me out...

Right, so now we have the next generation of DX10 cards out (DX10.1 aswell) and they not even capable of playing DX10 games properly... (as in full native res with the eye candy on)

Am i missing something here?... crysis for instance, nothing on the planet will run that game well...

How can you launch a game that wont even run properly?
Also... why is an old card (8800 series GTX / ultra etc...) kicking the crap out of the new cards still?

somethings not right here or have I missed something here... did ATI actually make a driver that would maximise the output of one of their new cards that came out with beta drivers but would apparently run better with the next catalyst.

hmmm... well this turned into a moan, but what I rerally wanted to ask is... whats the best card to buy, to run the new FPS games in 1920X1200 ? nothing?

google is your best friend , the best one to get right now is the 8800GT, it is not better than the NEW 8800GTS or the Ultra (the GTX is a waste of money dont buy it) the ultra is the best one but it is $500+ so unless you got that kind of money coming out of your pocket dont get it. The old 8800GTS is bad dont get it, get a 8800GT instead. between the 8800GT and the new 8800GTS, the 8800GTS beats it by a little bit. so if you need the extra boost, then get a 8800GTS if not get the 8800GT, it is the best card for price/performance. ATI has the 3870 but its not that good compared to the 8800GT.

It just gets a bit annoying how you have to keep buying the latest gfx card every 2 months, to get something that wont actually do what its supposed to do

Anyways, i have christmas bonus and perhaps its time to get another HD2900 to crossfire... or perhaps an X3870.... but i still feel like its not going to make any difference...

Basically we at a point where the hardware just inst capable of doing what its supposed to... we in that blank period where we have to sit patiently and wait for the next gen of card to arrive... (with all of its bugs and bad drivers)

its always the case with new games take farcry for instance that was one hell of a game which could be played on with quite a modest system but couldnt be truly maxed out at full res for maybe a year or so? after its release, this is nothing new however the fact that crysis looks damn good on medium more than makes up for my £190 (when bought) graphics card not being able to run it at ultra settings again the same was true for doom 3, r6lv and many more games its just a sad fact of life but i think if the gameplay is damn good then medium settings if lovely looking will sufice for most gamers

very true, so dont be amped on playing crysis on the VERY MAX. it looks good with 8x AA so stick with that. The 8800GT should be able to pull good Graphics on that, especially if you overclock it .

My setup plays crysis at my res of 16xx x 10xx at max detail....no issues, smooth as a babies botty but I agree, the goalposts do keep changing but I remember when I had a 7900GTX, I maxed every game I played then along came Fear!

yeah i guess so... over reacting... but i have just added up the thousands ive spent on GFX, PSU's, RAM, CPU, Mobos etc over the last couple of years... and i just really would like to have a card come around again and stay as well as the GTX 8800 did a year ago...

Yeah, TBH with the 8800GT I just had 4x AA I think, can get more outta the GTS.

yeah i was happy with my P4 3ghz & X1950pro in DX9 too...
Decided DX10 is here... theres been 2 generations of DX10 cards and none of them can actually perform well in DX10 yet...

still that G92 GTS is not gonna let you play something on a 24" in native resolution with the details up... I guess i just have money to do a valuable upgrade, at the worst time possible.

January / Feb... some interesting cards should be coming out... and my money will already be well spent on holidaying, maxing and relaxing

I think you will find that with your quad, an overclocked G92 GTS will be more than up to the task in giving you at the very least "decent" detail levels on that 24 inch screen.

I agree that there aren't enough higher memory models available, but CPU's are leaps and bounds behind current videocards in terms of tech. I would like to see a cpu that is at least a year ahead of video cards.

get a 1gb 8800gt for sure. @ that rez Im sure you can make use of the extra memory it offers.. just look at crysis.. at times it can use over 700mb's of ram.. get a gt and put some nice water cooling on it or just a good air cooler will do, but than you have that extra heat in your case.

Actually I disagree.

Competition is pretty pathetic at the moment.

Nvidia and Intel are milking it. Intel is holding off from an early release from its next line because they see no reason to stop selling inventory they have, there is no threat, and since they are already the fastest car on the block, why release a new one that will only hurt the sales of the previous chips. Until they run out of inventory there is no reason for them to push out the latest greatest.

Same with Nvidia. I mean if you could just revise a core (g80 -g92) that was already owning the competition and keep making money at it why wouldn't you. In fact making more money because a smaller chip means more yield per wafer.

As gamers and enthusiasts we look forward to the next big release and on the other side of the coin, we are also the first to feel what a non-competitive market feels like. It feels just like this. There is no reason for Nvidia or Intel to release because they own the highend market. And until we see some real competition from ATI/AMD this situation isn't going to change.

direct X is always way in front of itself.. it always has been.. plus its too easy for software guys to add bells and whistles.. far harder for the hardware guys to make hardware to play em.. especially with new super huge 24 inch monitors coming out at affordable prices..

grafix cards are pretty good at the moment.. u guys expect way to much and in truth will never be satisfied.. he he he

in fact everything is good hardware wise.. new cheap intel celeron.. new cheap half decent grafix cards for way less money than they used to be..

its never been cheaper or easier to put together a decent gaming system..

the 1900 and 7900 cards are srill 100% on-par with modern games. Granted, they might not be DX10, but that'll be a while before it starts becoming standard.

Tell me then when the last time we could get cards which are very close to the cutting edge for less than $250.

ummm never? closest thing was the 9700 pro at 300$ upon release. granted with the rate of inflation it would probably be more like 350-400$ in todays standards, just look at milk and gas, both are nearly triple what they were in 02-03

Like I said....I can play Crysis with high detail. Has anyone actually thought that actually it's the game developers that are pretty pathetic.....not the card manufacturers? Why develop a game in the first place that you know 95% of your customers are not going to be able to play smoothly or with the level of detail they would like.......I thought the whole idea about good marketing was to give your customers what they want? Perhaps this is why Crysis sales have actually been pathetic and NVidia cards sales have been out of the roof!......I rest my case your honour

I actually like the fact that Crysis can't run at highest setting on most cards, it gives a kick in the ass to manufacturers to produce a better piece of hardware. It needs to start somewhere.
