What Windows are you trying to activate? If I recall Windows 10 digital licensing is tied to your Microsoft account these days, Windows 7 on the other hand is tied to your specific hardware ID's. Usually you can call Microsoft and they will activate it over the phone for you. Just say you had to replace the motherboard due to power spike or failure.

Win 10 is tied to hardware ID... i never heard of that on 7 ... 8.1 maybe but 7 never ... and i reinstalled my 2 OEM 7 Pro a lot of time on different hardware and rigs without any issues, even funnier : Win 10 you change your computer hardware too radically : voided license :p

on my mobo change i had just to reactivate my Win 10 install using the Win 8.1, from which i upgraded from, CD-Key
granted i only did a "same brand, one step above, model" swap.

That's the one I used to activate Windows 7 a couple of weeks ago. Still working as I tried it a few minutes ago.

See I was under the impression that he left Windows installed and just upgraded his hardware and now its prompting to "activate" windows again due to the hardware changes.

Windows 7 anytime you would swap from AMD to Intel it would force you to re-activate. I haven't installed Windows 10 enough these days to see what its tied to, I know they changed the way their licensing works these days and thought it was all tied to a Microsoft account.. something with digital entitlement, i would assume its linked to hardware ID's but wasn't sure how deep that rabbit hole goes with them

I changed an SSD on my desktop and Windows 10 nagged me to login to my Hotmail address for verification.
Did the same on my Win 7 laptop and it asked me to reactivate via phone.

okay i rang that number.. it eventually got me through to a barely understandable indian call center.. he told me i need a windows 7 product key from nearly two years ago.. i told him i no longer have the windows 7 product key.. he kept telling me i could not activate my current windows 10 without the windows 7 product key that was on the machine when i bought it.. i got kind of pissed off and ask to speak to his superior.. apart from having a better phone line i got exactly the same response.. i can not activate my repaired (not new) machine without an ancient windows 7 product key from nearly two years ago..

i did get pretty irate in the end and told him exactly what i thought of Microsoft.. but it seems i am gonna have to add to my £700 quid repair bill with new copy of windows.. f-cking wankers.. least i recon they are.. he he he

Always save those keys. I had to talk to the same Indian people. Then they kept asking if they did a good job. I had the 7 key so they authorized it

It was an old OEM key

That's the downside of hardware swaps. Microsoft can smell the cash.

you can get legitimate Windows 7 keys on eBay now for buttons.

Was it similar to this guy?

The odd thing was he asked for remote access and then went threw the automated key authorization. You know the long ass bunch of numbers. I could have done that for him ??

MS has it all jacked up now. If I had known it would take 45 minutes I would have just bought the damn license

I bought a OEM win 10 key, activated it. Tied it to my M$ account, changed my board and cpu then reinstalled win 10, and it activated automatically.

True but even if you try and activate with an OEM key on a new machine you'll get knocked back by the automated process.
Been there and nearly ripped my hair out. The Indian guy was no help either and told me to buy a new key. Cheeky beggar.

I had a motherboard swapped in a new pc, I just called the number and said I installed it once, It activated fine. I got the old activating window back with typing slui.exe 4 in the run window.

It was the OEM key that I had problems with. I tried everything multiple times but no joy.
And that's the first and last time it's ever happened.

All of this make sense. Windows before 10 used to be tied to a motherboard (so changing ssd/hdd was no trouble at all). When W10 came out, I read somewhere that they removed this restriction but I didnt verify this information. In the past if you wanted to use your oem windows on new mb, you had to call M$ and tell them that your old one broke and you had recieved warranty replacement.

Regarding this issue - keep in mind that you just upgraded your W7 to W10, you didnt get brand new W10 for free so it seems right to me that you should keep sn from W7 you bought.

Yes, indeed, that should be the starting point, otherwise he has his pants at his ankles.

Yes, indeed, that should be the starting point, otherwise he has his pants at his ankles.

Ya pretty much. :(

Though I'd see if I could snag a Windows 7 OEM key off of an old office PC headed out to the trash. Though I work in an office that gets those from time-to-time.

That or buy one cheap from someone at [H]...

I've purchased a few from [ION]:

Not sure if there would be any issues using them overseas, but I had 0 issues using them on my VM's to upgrade to 10 Pro from 7 Pro keys. Used one for my disabled son's new gaming PC for xmas as well, and did the assisted services upgrade then.

For $10-20USD, I'd grab one or two and be done with it. :)
