I was using a Celeron e3300 before ( I don't OC ) with my 5750 card / win7 x86. I could play GTA IV ok, at 1280x1024 at high to medium settings, all distance settings to 0. Now that i upgrade to a Quad core Q6600 i can play like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONWBRTcOvak

I have notice the game runs about 10% faster with MLAA enable in the CP. Even tho MLAA makes the text in games and outside of games looks fuzzy and weird looking. Anyways, i just tested GTA IV without MLAA and i notice that " Shadows " really kills performance. If i play at 1280x1024 all max out but shadows and night shadows off, i am getting between 37-70fps easily. Runs and looks great, infact the game looks a tad bit better without Shadows enable, with the help of " Reality 1.6 install ".

Anyways, i would like to play with Shadows , well everything max, at 37-70fps all the time or at least near it, or a bit smoother. I was wondering, what card do i need from the 5750 to be able to at least play the game with shadows at high settings and still get up to 30-60 all the time? Would a 6850 fix this problem?

I seen benchmarks where the 6850 with AA enable is about 30% faster over the 5750.

Overall performance of an 6850 is 40% better than your current card. GTA4 is known to be a resource hog especially in the CPU department and GPU memory size. An 6850 will definitely be a solid improvement in any game.

Hey thanks for the reply, that is what i am going to get. GTA IV runs pretty good tho, only when i enable MLAA, but MLAA makes the text in games and text in my browser look fuzzy. I heard its because of the low resolution, but i am not sure if that is the case. Anyways, thanks. Guess i will pick one up very soon. Waiting for a price drop at newegg tho.

Man this game is demanding as f***. Even at 1280x1024 it runs really weird. I can get up to 35-60, but its not stable. If i disable shadows, everything is much smoother, but it doesn't look good. GTA IV must be for high end hardware and video cards or something, because its the only game i own which struggles. So i will pick up a 6850 very soon, i wish the prices were a bit lower, really don't feel like spending near 200 bucks for one of them.

The game is also a very bad console port. When it came out it was almost unplayable on PC. Many many patches on it still is badly coded for the PC so expect to have these drops with a better GPU also. By the way, I think that between your celeron and the quad you saw a great difference.

Well i hope the 6850 can fix it, i will find out this week. Plan on buying one hopefully this week coming up. Yea there is a major boost compared to the Celeron and Q6600. I only tested Hell Gate, TDU2 and L4D 2. All games runs way smoother and records easily. TDU2 i can play at 1280x1024 or 1280x720 with aax8 all very high, but i have to keep environment quality at medium. So overall so far, everything is much better. GTA IV is really the only game which plays like crap lol. Anyways, i will report back once i get the 6850.

Don't panic bro:p, I got a decent rig and I still can't max this horrible console ported game, I rather play it on the PS3 or Xbox360:toast:

I just pop in my old pny 9800gt green edition video card with the latest drivers and play at 1280x1024 medium to all max out, max out meaning my limit with the 512mb card, and i get no stuttering or anything, it runs really smooth. It seems like the Geforce card can run the game smoother over the ati card. I just think with certain setups needs certain video cards, so i am going to buy a gtx 550ti and see how it runs with it before i buy a 6850.

This game seems like nvidia cards more, I remember running this game with a GTX 480 and it was pretty damn smooth, month later I popped on my HD 5870 and it wasn't a enjoyable experience, got stutters and hitching, so I lowered some settings and fixed it for the most part, so there you go, an awesome game that has been poorly coded to the PC and likes to butt fuck nvidia cards:laugh:

If you plan Nvidia then go with the GTX 460, the 1 GB version. The 550Ti is not much of an improvement.

I've got a 6970 and struggle to run this thing at 1680x1050 max settings with max MLAA and AF

edit: clarify "struggle" - it plays fine it just stutters more than any other game. it's the most "demanding" game I have but only because it's sloppy code

If you want to run this game @ max settings, you need at least 1.25GB of VRAM on your GPU. GTA IV uses almost all my VRAM @ max settings and @ my res.

If you have a quad and a respectable GPU and you set the game to look like the console versions with the detail level, the game should have a higher frame rate on the PC. The patches went a long way in improving performance. Not the worst PC port by far. There is a massive amount of rendering being done in this game, the performance is actually very good.

I got the deluxe version of GTA IV with the DLC off of Steam for $10. Well worth it, MP adds a ton of replay. It's fun working towards lvl 10 in MP.

Keeps telling me my NAT type is too strict and boots me from MP games and I don't even have a router. Don't appreciate that, didn't used to do that on my cable internet connection.

I've never been happy with performance in GTA4. It doesn't even run that well on my current system.

If you're just using a cable modem and nothing else contact your ISP. There's something blocking ports and they can give you the support to fix it.

I WAS using cable modem when I didn't get that message. Now I am sharing a wireless modem with someone else in this apartment and it gives me the NAT type too strict message.

As well as upgrading your card/GPU a nice graphics mod such as this is another way to improve performance. Good luck! :)
