I'm batting for newer technology, more compatable technology (DX11), cheaper technology, and something that once OCd will beat a GTS250. As I have already pointed out the GTS250 is pretty much maxxed out of the box, HD4850 is not.

I gotta agree with ket, the 4850 may be on par but it has a lot better technology under the hood.

"once OCd will beat a GTS250" - Until we see a review of an overclocked 4850 beating a stock GTS 250 you are merely guessing, you are probably right, but its still a guess.

Secondly, what is stopping one from overclocking the GTS250 to match the overclocked 4850?

I'll be honest I haven't seen a massive overclock from a GTS250, but they are overclockable to a reasonable level. (W1zard managed to get a 11% overclock on the memory, and 5% on the core.)

Edit:

I gotta agree with ket, the 4850 may be on par but it has a lot better technology under the hood.

But this isn't being reflected in the reviews, a lot of reviews say otherwise. The fact that there is 800 shader units and 956M transisistors under the hood and still looses makes it less appealing. Spec wise the 4850 is better, but we can not hold onto the hope that ATI will tweak the card's drivers in the near-future to exploit the card as it has been 1 year already. Right here and right now its the slower card.

Edit 2:

Flyordie, I look forwards to the review. I'm not doubting the 4850s performance or overclockability, but I would like to see both the GTS 250 and 4850 overclocked as far as possible to make the results ethical.

I have already linked to the HD4850 beating the GTS250 in the non-biased game (AFAIK) Bioshock. Games like Crysis are no good because we all know the devs worked mostly with nvidia hardware while developing crysis.

hmm, i didn't get that link. I've went back and I can not find it.

I'm sure the odd game favours the 4850. I noticed myself in Fear 2 the GTS 250 does poorly.

But I'm basing my argument as an overall picture rather than a game specific one.

Edit:

I'm not sure why it's not considered high-end.

Because it performs at half the speed of the real high end cards e.g. 4870 X2.

I often call the 4850 a mid-highend card

Or I call the 4850 high-end and the 4870 X2 super high-end

Theres no such thing as overall picture, too many games are one side or the other. Thats why its important to filter the games out that have no affinity eitherway and take their results into account more than other games that do have a affinity

I asked the same question (GTS250 or 4850HD) and I was told to get the 4850HD. You won't be dissapointed if you get the 4850 is all I can say. It's a really great card, I'm not sure why it's not considered high-end.

4850. GTS250 is yet another rename of a card, this time the 9800GTX transformed into the /sarcasm/ mighty GTS250! /sarcasm/

and the 9800gtx, is another mighty 8800gts, so yea, your getting a card that was originaly devolped 3 generations ago.... i think i would stay away from it..

Where do these fan boys come from seriously.

The fact that the card was developed 3 generations ago and is still just as fast (faster according to reviews) is a positive not a negative.

Edit:

By the way my XFX 4830 just arrived....need to get this work done before I can install it!

Edit 2:

I'd personally go for HD4850 just because GTS250 is a rebranded 8800GT even if GTS250 performs better slightly.

So you are saying that you turn your nose up to a faster card because of Nvidia's rebranding methodologies? If it was for financial reasons I would of said "that makes sense" but it is out of pride and fanboysm.

So Hd4850 is the best investment towards DX11 and in terms of price too.

I am planning to buy Samsung 19" Mist model for 7K(abt 175$).

I am really new into this mobo thing. I have only heard of 790GX chipsets for AM2+ sockets. Can you enlighten me with some facts? I would really appreciate your help.

If you are gaming on a 19" widescreen the HD 4850 512MB is the better choice, especially at $39.50 USD less. Heck, an HD 4830 would get the same performance at 1440x900. If you were gaming at anything higher than a 22" monitor the GTS 250 1GB would be better. You made a good choice.

Ok ok so now since I know you are getting a 19" wide, some are 1680x1050 max most are 1440x900, which can be more dependent on cpu (attention: 2.8Ghz modern dual will show no bottleneck!). I say dependent on price, a 4830 UNLESS you can get a 4850/GTS250 at the same price. Both would perform about the same and 4830 would be so close to them.

HD4830 will deliver the same performance of HD4850 for games like crysis, gta 4 and others in ultraquality and max resolution????

Exactly, that is what I've been trying to say all day, and all afternoon. :)

The difference between the ATI 4830 and 4850 is tiny. Usually only translates into 1-5 FPS between them. Occasionally you'll see larger gaps of around 10 FPs between. But even a 10 FPS gap is tiny when you're getting say 60-150 FPS average.

Both cards are more than capable, if the 4830 is cheaper in your area by a substantial sum, then it is a card definitely worth considering.

Coincidentally, iam moments away from installing my XFX 4830 :)

Without reading every post, here's my thoughts:

I would opt for a X3 720 over the X4 940 due to the unlocked multiplier and cheaper price. Then, motherboard overclockability isn't nearly as important as all you need to do is up the CPU multiplier.

Go for the cheaper card. Sure one is better than the other, but both wlll do what you need with no real world differences (looking at your monitor while gamimg, etc.) between the two.

I wouldn't equate DirectX 11 into the situation at all, at this point.

Also to add to your post erocker that 720BE is AM3 ready whereas the 940 isn't. Gives you more options to go with ddr3 also. ;)

From a GPU standpoint neither will unfortunately. GTA 4 will benefit from more video memory.

Since when have many of human motives made much sense ?

I wouldn't buy something because it should be better on paper - but isn't. I'm not that far gone. I might if the price was right in relation to the application though (a 19" monitor).

It makes a lot of sence, actually..

I'm batting for newer technology, more compatable technology (DX11), cheaper technology, and something that once OCd will beat a GTS250. As I have already pointed out the GTS250 is pretty much maxxed out of the box, HD4850 is not.
