So this is something that's been making me wonder. I just want to preface by saying that I did RMA the dead card and I now have a replacement. I just want some ideas as to why the old card died.

On the Fourth of July I was playing DOOM with my GTX 1080 FTW2 at 1080p. No problems there as one might expect. After I was done, I listened to music and browsed facebook for a bit. Not long after I started doing that, my system shut down and the temperature lights on the card were all red with the card itself quite hot to the touch.

I decided to let the system cool down thinking that somehow the 1080 overheated. After about half an hour I tried starting the system up again, but the system wouldn't post, with my motherboard giving a VGA error and the temperature LEDs on the card were still red. I decided to switch out my card for my HD 7850 and GTX 970 just to make sure that somehow my motherboard wasn't at fault. They worked fine. I took the 1080 to another system and the same thing happened. The temperature lights all lit up red and the system wouldn't boot. I called EVGA and they immediately set me up with an RMA. A week or two later I got my new 1080 which is working just fine, at least for the time being.

My question is, what exactly happened to my old 1080? I never took the card apart, never messed around with the fan profiles, and I never overclocked it. Could it be that the fans died and the card cooked to death somehow? Or did it just die because the chip was bad? I did have the power option in the nvidia settings set to 'adaptive' and the card's bios was set to the 'Master' bios instead of the 'Slave' so the fans weren't always spinning. I called EVGA about this though they told me that the RMA department didn't know why it did, all they knew was that it just simply failed. I just really want to know what killed the card so that I can hopefully prevent this from happening again.

Did you get the thermal pad thing fixed? It's pretty well known that the 1080 and 1070 from EVGA were having really bad thermal issues on cards.

Or a temp reader went belly up.

I did not get any extra thermal pads. Though this being a FTW2 that issue shouldn't be present in that model of the card since it uses their new ICX cooling solution and all.
As for a temperature sensor going bad, that does sound about right.

The part number of the FTW2 that I had was not on there.
It should be noted that those are all ACX model cards as opposed to ICX models, which was what my old FTW2 was.

You are correct. FTW2 are not affected.

Sounds like RMA time. :(

I've already RMA'd the card and got a replacement. That's taken care of thankfully.
I'm just baffled as to why the old card failed in the first place.

All electronics can fail. I've had a dvd player die after a month. I've had other dvd players work for years.

My step dad purchased a new truck. 31 miles on it and the computer on it died as he was driving down the highway. The truck powered off and he coasted to the shoulder of the road.

Shit happens. No matter how well a company may be with their products, there will always be ones that fail without any signs.

EVGA SC series cards have historically been reference cards with a better cooler ... and they had serious cooler issues with the SC and FTW with 10xx, the omission of thermal pads was corrected, not sure what else. As far as I can remember the SC used a reference PCB again, not sure about the FTW ... don't recall anything mentioned other than the dual 8 pin power output (375 watts) standing out cause max power draw was in low 200s. Wish more reviews would delve into that subject in detail.

well, it confirm why EVGA has a lifetime warranty ... you will need it

joke aside ... i had the same problem with a 460 and it was a EVGA, RMA'ed one time ... two time... three time.... and then moved to other brands

kinda like EVGA for their mobo (second hand at a more "correct" price ) not so much their GPU and PSU.

Well i hope you will be happy with replacement, if it happens again then you have problem with your rig.
or it's like my case ... the problem was the card itself .... in chain (well you could actually say the issue was the brand )

Funny you say that, as this is my third EVGA RMA. lol
First time was for a 980 Ti that was dying, then a 1080 that was just unstable and had extremely noisy fans, and finally the FTW2 card I sent in last month.

Heh yeah, no kidding.
At the very least should the 1080 die like the last one I have a bunch of backup cards now.
A GTX 970 and a pair of HD 7850s. :)

Meh , stuff brakes. Who knows maybe it was something as simple as a blown capacitor or burnt resistor.

Nex is a g1 psu, they changed the name after that, it might be your psu or mobo at this point unless your source power there is just that bad or polarity is reversed....

My 1070 seahawk x just up and died on me out of the blue about a couple months ago, no smoke , no sparks , no warning, just a yellow screen and , done...I've never had one just quit on me . at least your rma didn't take 7 weeks for a replacement..

Funny story , my 970 had a vreg short out some how, you could see the damage under the shroud, but it still ran perfect, but I rma'd any ways, and every card they sent me artifacted , one year and 4 rma's later they finally just sent me a 1060

Like others have said sometimes shit just happens. But I'm glad you got your 1080 replaced , that time in between when your card dies and getting a new one is stressful
