Hello everybody,
first of all escuse me for my english ..
I just bought a KFA² GTX 1080 EXOC and I just noticed that it was not semi-passive.
After long searches without results, I come here to ask for help to find out if there was a modified bios compatible? or is it possible to change in NVIDIA driver settings?

thank you in advance for your help

Welcome, I take it by semi passive you mean that at a certain temperature the fan shuts off? As far as I know Pascal is locked for bios modding, however, you should be able to lower the fan curve in something such as PrecisionX or MSI afterburner, to a point where it isn't as loud, and this shouldn't lower the life of fan.

Thank you for your quick reply.
Yes I would not like to hear the ventilos in office and I know that there is an identical model but more expensive that is semi passive.
If I understand correctly, we can not change the bios on this model.
The only way to lower the speed of the ventilos, I have to use a utility.
I know Afterburner but not precisionx.what is the best?

For the noise, a case with sound insulation/picking up some sound deadening foam will help, and utility wise, that comes down to taste.. These 2 seem to be the most used, and I have spent ample time using both, I'd recommend afterburner for your case because PrecisionX tends to be a little more convoluted for first time users.

Use a program like Afterburner to set a custom fan curve that you prefer. There is no "semi-passive" model of that card.

Hello,
@therealmeep: I have a case with ventilos in front and cables passing behind the motherboard so I can not put insulation.
Otherwise I will use after burner and then if it is too noisy I will buy a semi-passive.Car I had a RX 580 Nitro + 8 GB semi-passive silent which rose to 67 ° C in games. It is really nice.

@erocker: yes there are semi-passive models:
KFA² GTX 1080 EXOC Sniper or HOF for example.

That card isn't close to being semi passive. The GTX 1080 is not the card to get if your primary concern is how loud it is, it's a powerful card and even with a custom fan profile will probably always have fans running.

Honestly, with smart case placement I struggle to understand how you can hear an idle fan noise in an office space, set the fan to 20% and it should be near inaudible.

I even do this on my (zero-DB fan enabled) MSI Gaming X. Never notice it even being there, at all, even when fans ramp up to 30-35-40%.

Remember as well that you also have a PSU, case fans and CPU fan that produces fan noise. The net result is that you'll be hearing another component instead ;) This is why case sound insulation is the best solution, idle fans are IMO a nonsensical solution. The biggest nuisance with fan noise is the fact that they spin up and down, this is the sound I generally pick up on (I never game with headphones mind you), and if they spin up from idle, you're more likely to hear it.

Basically, you either accept mild fan noise or you have to go fully passive. Every middle ground is almost guaranteed to become audible at some point, our hearing is odd that way. For a performance rig, going for low-RPM optimized case fans and a good PSU with silent fan (EVGA does this very well, not all high end PSUs do, so check this out) is the best you can really do.

Bonsoir of France,
@ Vayra86: I have a PSU RM850 from CORSAIR so semi passive and that triggers its fan rarely and I never perceived the sound.
On my CPU oc at 4.5 Ghz which goes up to 65 ° C in games, I have 2 ventilos that do their work with an acceptable noise.
Other ventilos on the chassis do not exceed 30% of their speed, they are just there to circulate the air in the box.
I had a R9 390x Sapphire TRI-X OC before that was noisy though in the various comparisons of the time, it was considered correct level noise but after having tasted the RX 580 Nitro + sapphire which is mute ... has no comparison and I can tell you that it's really great to play without hearing his PC blowing like a sick person. otherwise I will return this model and take a silent version more bulky but it does not matter.

@Karli77 yes I have no idea what sound the KFA actually makes so there's that - I will say, that so far every single MSI TwinFrozR cooler that I've had (GTX 770, GTX 1080) has performed super super well both in noise and temperatures.

But gaming will put load on your system so at that point, a zero DB fan on the GPU has no value. And in idle, if you turn down fan speed to the lowest possible, does it really make more noise than your case fans? I will say: I deliberately do NOT use the fan-off mode on my MSI Gaming X and I really cannot hear it.

If you want my advice:

get this case, instead of swapping your GPU
http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/define-series/define-r5-black

Its great to build in, lots of space, has sound insulation and is not a hot box either. It will mute ALL your system components and case fans, I'm sitting next to one typing right now, and I literally cannot hear a thing, if I turn on the system, even with the fans revving up, I need to look at the indicator light OR touch the case to feel vibration to check if its actually on :)

Im also a silent PC hunter ;)

If you DO swap the GPU for another 1080
- MSI Gaming X
- Gigabyte G1
- Asus Strix OC
very silent coolers. Two (large) fans however are better than three!

How?

Generally speaking...

Sound does not accumulate. It's not cumulative. Quiet + Quiet ≠ Loud. Loud + Loud ≠ Louder. Noise increases with fan speed. The 2 (large) fans would have to be SIGNIFICANTLY larger than the other 3 to move the same amount of air with the same amount of noise. Like 50% larger. So that they could spin slower and produce less noise while moving the same amount of air. This is not going to be the case in this instance. Since their relative size isn't going to be SIGNIFICANTLY different. So, in this instance, 3 fans would cool equally(move the same amount of air) while being less noisy than 2. Since 3 fans don't have to spin as fast to move the same amount of air as 2. 3 fans would also cool better(move more air) while only being equally as noisy as 2. Since 3 fans spinning as fast as 2 would be moving a lot more air.

There are more variables to consider. And things aren't perfectly linear like that. But generally speaking...3 fans are going to be less noisy than 2 on a modern GPU cooler...in most instances and usage scenarios.

I really dont see how that card can have louder fans than the case fans at idle being inside the case. Really now, get MSI Afterburner and do whats been suggested and temper the fan curve to your liking, you can add up to 4 more points of change to the fan curve. The default fan curve, without using Afterburner, seems to only have 2 settings , low and high.

Also, noise insulation does not go behind the motherboard. You tube might have a video or two about using noise insulation effectively.

All true, but MSI uses larger fan diameters, this gives a different pitch and noise profile. Noise is more than just dB ;)

Hello from France,
@MrGenius:
I have taken note of your advice. I thank you.
I have 2 large ventilos in extractions of air of 200 mm.

I also have 2 120 mm and 1 90 mm fan which sends in.

I think that's fair enough.

Hello,
On the other hand I find that it heats a lot:
Under Rise of Tomb Raiders and Battlefield 1 in 1080P: temperature between 76 and 82 ° C after 10 minutes of play.

My PC case is a large, very ventilated tower.

Is this normal?

For Nvidia GPUs this is normal, yes

Hello,
@ Vayra86: so it's normal for you.POrtant it is said that the GTX heat less than the Radeon.Ma RX 580 nitro + heated less ...
Can I go to what temperature with a GTX 1080?
Another thing, when I get out of Battlefield 1, my screen turns black (no display) and I have to press the "OFF" button and restart the PC.

And impossible to play this games in Directx 12, it does not launch.
