It's good enough now, but don't expect ultra details on FullHD.

Oh, that depends, I've stuck with the GTX 460 up until 2017, if you're willing to drop down settings really low you might get decent framerates. The truth is I've also had a GTX 660 which was far superior in every way and didn't cost that much more at that point.

Yeah you can get away with playing something modern, but it will depend on a game-to-game basis. 2015-2018 AAA games is really stretching the GTX 460, it is especially hurt when you run out of framebuffer (1GB of VRAM for most of them). Fallout 4 as an example runs like hot garbage on it, Skyrim LE without too many mods will be okay. Having a GTX 660 2GB here helps a lot. Some of the newer games really benefit from newer GPU architectural changes which makes Maxwell/Pascal cards wayyyy faster in some scenarios. I'm trying to set the stage on whereabouts the GTX 460 sits, so you can get a general idea.

I remember being able to play Wolfenstein: New Order on the GTX 460 768MB variant, but I would get some stutters here and there, it would still be playable though. BioShock Infinite ran okay for the most part with 900p, CS:GO can almost run on a potato. Final Fantasy 13 PC port can be run okay as far as I know. Resident Evil 5/Devil May Cry 4 runs great at almost max. And you can always run older games at higher resolutions/settings if you know a game you can get into and don't care that much about graphics. I think 2009-2012 triple-A titles are the sweet-spot for it, otherwise as I've said you will have to drop settings in order to reach a reasonable framerate.

Paired with a Sandy/Ivy bridge or even Haswell CPU it should be a decent rig, compared to what you have in your specs right now

Looking back on it, I still think its a good card, it was one of my first proper gaming cards when I finally moved to the mid-range, before I just couldn't afford a card like this.

Most modern games will likely achieve around 20-30fps at the lowest of settings, 720p. My K3000M could barely run modern games and it was around the same performance

We can sugar coat it, but realistically, no those specs are older than yesterday's norm.

Pointless. You need something Kepler or newer (GTX 6xx) or on the AMD side, HD7xxx or better. 4GB RAM is also not sufficient, you will want 8. Thén a 3rd/4th gen Intel CPU will create a nicely balanced, budget gaming rig. Full HD ultra is miles away even then, if you consider recent titles, but low-medium is possible..

Of course if you play old games (and there are TONS of great ones around) then a lot more can be done.

I suppose you got it for free from the recycling place. It's fine for older stuff. Depends what you want to use it for. StarCraft remastered will be fine :)

The GTX 460 I think was around the same performance as an AMD HD6850 maybe a little less, so for modern AAA games forget it, even if it could run the games it prob's be a slide show fest, maybe need a min of something like HD7870 or GTX760 a lot of modern games will be wanting more than 2gig graphics card ram most likely ? let alone 1gig

It was decent card few years ago, but modern game, i dont think so. Of course what you consider modern game :)

I have some results with Dirt Rally, Tomb Raider, Metro 2033, 3d mark. Full hd, high-ultra mostly 20-32 avg fps, with xeon e3-1240.
And some unigine heaven and blender gpu test with pentium g630t. Its around 10% slower than a gtx 750. Or double fast as gt 730 or nearly half performance of 1050Ti.

Thanks for all the replies, I didn't expect so many so quick. The only modern title i MIGHT plan on running if Fortnite. I really don't care on how a game looks graphics wise so low settings are fine for me. All other titles are at least 10 years old by now that I'm running (eg. GTA San Andreas)

At first I wanted to rant about how old this card is and how much it's gonna suck even in low-specced games, but then I found this:

Anyways, for a long-term usage you might wanna think about skipping 460 and at least saving up a few bucks for a used GTX750Ti or GTX950 instead.
Especially if you consider how hot and unreliable Fermi is. I've got about a dozen of dead 460s and 560s in my office, mostly used as paperweights and door stoppers.
But if you get this card for free - it's fine to abuse it until it eventually dies.

Best investment for people with limited budget now are full GTX780Ti overclocked.
Same speed as GTX980 for 150-160$.

That's actually TITAN Black only with 3GB and much much faster because higher clock, same number of CUDA.
TITAN Black Kepler overclocked is still usefull graphic card. And I give you warranty, there is a passionate gamers who can't afford newest GPU every 1-2 years but they enjoy in gameplay more than people who play games only to look graphic details and spend 1000 dollars every year on GPU, now even more.

Enthusiasm can't be only if you have 3000-4000-5000$ per yer for computer.
There is a people still with X79 or X58 RIGs, watercooled, nice, some newer GPU and CPU until really become bottleneck.

My plan to replace X99 is 2020. Not before. Sorry no money.
Later I will buy 10 core Intel as now i9-9820X and again 5 years.

You can save a lot of money if you start to play games 2 years after launch date and GPU same.
In my country there is a people who not pay more than 400-500$ for GPU and 200-250 for CPU and always have premium GPU and i7 processors, only much later not when demand is biggest. Now they have GTX1080/1080Ti, 2020 they will have RTX2080Ti, etc...

For me watercooling become more interesting now than last generations.
OK I will not put him on i7-2600K, but X99 still have power.

No true. A GTX460 will run most modern games up to 2016 very well. Some settings need to be turned down true, but it's still a decent card if it's all you've got. One of the kids in my neighborhood still has one. He's saving for something newer, bu the 460 is working for him. Hardly pointless/worthless.

@8bitgamer757
If it's all you can afford, it's not a bad card. Just don't expect to run the latest and greatest games on high settings. A few of them won't run at all. But for 2016/2015/2014 games you'll be ok as long as you turn down some settings. 2013 on back you'll be just fine. GOG and Steam have a ginormous select of great games that will run perfectly on that card. Pay attention to specs requirements for each title and you'll soon get a feel for what you can do with it.

While that's a good point, some people don't have that kind of money.

In my view, "limited budget" means $50 tops. "Decent budget" is $90, "big budget" is $150.

The GTX 760 can be had for about €40 here, which is probably pretty decent.

You can do most of that on a recent IGP as well. A 460 is simply too old, lacks VRAM, lacks support, and is a weak match for an Intel 3rd/4th gen CPU... which has an IGP too. Its not really worth much anymore, lets just be realistic here. If its free, fine, but that wont make it perform better. As you say: some modern games wont even run period.

However as others and myself also point out, other cheap alternatives exist with much better support and lower (power) requirements, plus far better performance specifically for modern games. For as little as 40-50 bucks you can have 2x the performance or more.

TLDR yes it runs, but dont ask how. OP asked if its good for modern gaming, no. Full Stop

You can do most of that on a recent IGP as well. Even for very low investments you can getfar better midrange GPUs that will actually provide nice FPS. A 460 is simply too old, lacks support, and is a weak match for an Intel 3rd/4th gen CPU... which has an IGP too.
That is a horrible thing to say! The only IGP's that will beat out a 460 are the very newest from AMD. Intel latest only barely compete. Plus you have to account for system ram being reduced to share with the IGP. No thank you! I'll take an older dedicated GPU over an modern IGP all day long. Besides, it's what the OP has to work with that is at hand. There are some users, you included, that are trying to say that what he's been offered has no value and it's not worth considering which is simply and patently false. Sure the GTX 460 is older, but it's still a good card that performs well, especially when compared to 3rd or 4th gen Intel IGP.

Not getting into a yes/no debate with you. What is the point of this topic if we tell people 'its free so then its always good'? If you assess the 460 at face value, it is simply obsolete. We dont know anything about OPs budget or options.

If you assess the 460 at face value, it is simply obsolete.
That's your opinion. That opinion is not supported by the vast library of great game titles that will run very well on it. Only the newest game titles will struggle or not run.
We dont know anything about OPs budget or options.
The OP gave us enough information to go on. They're doing some work and being offered some PC hardware as part of their compensation. Clearly it's what is being afforded them. In that context, what is being offered is likely a fair deal. Especially given the enormous amount of software that will run perfectly on it.

Ignore the nay-sayers. What you've been offered is older, not crap. Take what you've been offered and have fun with it!

To be honest, even that GTX460 is better than nothing.
Most ESport games will run ok on it, and you can get some BF and COD action on it.
Maybe a bit Crysis and some other shooters.

Dont hate on a man that has no budget to work with, he does what he can and what he gets it is good for him.
Do not expect everyone to have RTX2080TIs and I9s. That is what i call racist in the PC World.

Dude, take my advice for it and work with what you have. If you need proof, check out my rig and see what i work with and it works perfectly for most of the things i wanna play.

That's only true if and only if he gets it as a free bonus. Realistically I wouldn't pay even $10 for it, let alone do some work.
If I was in OPs place, I'd shake them up for some more RAM instead. A few more sticks of 4GB DDR3 will go a long way.

Remember! GTX460 is a friggin' 160W steamboat, which will require mandatory maintenance, adequate cooling, and a good PSU. It's not a 750Ti or 1030 which you can stick into pretty much anything (including pre-built OEM PCs) and call it a day. Also it's a risk. I don't want the OP to get the card, put in some time into all of the above and then be totally bummed out when he gets purple lines on the screen a week after.
