Here is the EK FC-470 I jut installed. I put it to some hard core testing last night. The most came from some real time rendering and the Cuda toolbox. It pretty much evened things out with the i7 and never got over 40c. I also played a few hours for BBC2 everything maxed except 32xAA, still never over 45c.

My conclusion is, on a loop with 1 BlackIce Xtreme III, my i7 and 470 extremely stressed are cooler then idol on air cooling. That's cold when it's 100°f outside.

I have made a slow fan up to 50ºC profile with Afterburner, then 50ºC=50%, 60ºC=60%, up to 100ºC=100%, and I am happy. The stock fan speeds are to slow and silent :)

Great card and SOLID "as it should be"! :)

Well I can confirm my old 480 gtx fan wasn't any louder than my current BFG maxcore fan. FYI at 700/1512/2500 this 260 gtx kicks all my games in the ass . Still miss my old 480 gtx but for my friends new build I think I will use a 5850. I picked one up new for him at 269.99 and no 470 gtx is that cheap so ATI it will be thanks guys for the info. Alot of good info was posted here about the 470 gtx but it became about money.

Fan IDLE’s at 40% (1400RPM's), highest LOAD is about 70% (2950RPM's) @ Stock fan settings. This typically keeps the card at 50c IDLE and about 88c LOAD, lowest temp was 42c, and highest temp was 93c. At 70% you can start to hear the fan more easily.

Oops. Sorry about that. The boss walked in and I smacked on the wrong keys.

Anyways, was going to ask whether 88°C is OK at full load. I use stock fan speeds, as well, and have been worried that 88°C is a wee bit high? Or is it? I do not like to mess with the hardware and usually keep to stock settings or auto. Do I need to worry when my GPU hits 88°C? MY GPU temps do not exceed this level, from what I've observed thus far.

Thanks and again, I apologize for the double post.

Are stock settings OK?

Was using two 9600GT's, a Recertified XFX PV-T96G-YHF Single-Slot, and a MSI N9600GT-T2D512-OC Dual-Slot, the XFX would IDLE at about 54c (35% Fan Speed), but would never go over 68c (52% Fan Speed). The GTX 470 I have is quieter than my XFX card at IDLE and at LOAD.

I use stock fan settings on my reference GTX 470, as well. Is 88°C all right insofar as GPU temperatures go?

As long as the card continues to run it is "safe". Temperatures getting too high will send the driver into recovery mode, which should send you looking for the cause;)

Should be fine, so unless you start seeing artifacts or having other issues it should be perfectly fine.

Idle temperatures are comfortably low, a lower fan speed in trade for higher temperatures would have helped with the idle noise. Under load the card is at what I would consider a healthy maximum for long term use.

It's been some 6 months or w/e since I've even logged in @ TPU. Looks like the place is still up and running.

Anyways, I was poking my GTX465 (unlocked to full GTX470) with a screwdriver - lo and behold, the IHS fell off.

Err, okay, it didn't just fall off...

It's the same terrible gray excuse-of-a-TIM on Fermi nV used before on G200 and G80.

Wow that's a great pic. I never thought of removing a heatspreader, but wow, same crappy TIM under there? Very tempting.

The dark colored stuff is an adhesive? It looks kinda spongy. Can you describe it? How did you adhere heatspreader back on?

Looks like he did a very nice job getting it off. Routine TIM replacement and reapplication from there. Curious about that adhesive though. How tough was it held on, how tough was it to remove and replicate?

Curtain's pulled away, well worth the time to photograph.. :respect:

The dark colored stuff is an adhesive? It looks kinda spongy. Can you describe it?
The adhesive is some sort of solid epoxy and I don't think it could be cut by a blade. But it's brittle enough for the seal to be broken by force.
How did you adhere heatspreader back on?
have you put back on that ihs or not?, if you did not does it lower your idle and load temp?
I had to put it back on but didn't use any adhesive, it's just sandwiched between the GPU and a MCW60.
I couldn't leave it out at the moment since I don't have a waterblock compatible with an IHS-less GTX470 that has the stock cooler's baseplate installed. So, I "had to" flip the IHS upside down and just apply proper TIM. I'll leave out the IHS as soon as I find a way to deal with the wateblock-incompatibility problem caused by the height of the frontplate around the GPU.

But I'm sure at least load temps decreased by a fair amount as the rubbery stock IHS-core TIM actually prevents contact between the two. As usual for me, impatience won while I was pulling the stock cooler off and was about to install the waterblock and I decided to save a step and rip the IHS out before even running it with an intact IHS. ¦|
lmao, whatya gonna do if the card dies now from prying that IHS off?
Don't worry, I've got an identical spare.
¦]

Think I'll do a temps comparison (cum-IHS vs. sine-IHS) when I decap the second one.
hmm I still wonder if the IHS on a Core 2 or a Core i7 are removable?
Some low-end C2Ds have a conventional non-adhesive TIM, some have the IHS kind of "soldered" to the core with an tin-indium alloy which melts at somewhere around 90ºC. Heat the IHS appropriately and you'll hear a *pop*. There's even no need to force it by hand. Few razor blades inserted at the corners make the event faster / more dramatic.
I haven't toyed with i7s, but I know they're are also soldered with similar or same stuff as C2Ds.

Here's my E6400back in september of 2006 after decapping the bugger. Unfortunately, it did not survive decapping as I foolishly bent the substrate of the CPU too much while (needlessly) levering the IHS.

To the OP..

Got a little sidetracked by the sight of a naked Fermi, I meant to contribute OP..

I'm running 470 SLI right now. 20 days left to step-up, I'm torn. I'd like to play with 480's, but OC'd 470 SLI is pretty sweet. I like knowing that 470 didn't undergo a last minute neuter like big brother did. Overall it's a solid choice. As for competitive products, I've run 5870 single and CF. Had to try Fermi though, happy so far..

My 480 is quiet and runs cool. I use MSI AfterBurner to adjust the fan scaling.

I wouldn't think the 470 would be any worse. And the case cooling is important too.

I like my msi gtx470. Recommended for everyone. Fan noise is good till 80%. 90C is highest temp i have seen at my clocks at fan of 75(manual). Excellent price/performance ratio. No complaint at all. :D. If you look at my specs you see i only have a COoLER MASTER(yes no corsair!) 620w PSU and it runs perfectly :D
