So I think the graphics card is toast. I can get it to boot into windows and display outputs work, but once the driver is being applied, the computer crashes.
GPU-Z just sees this:

Everything is fine, apart from, well not being able to apply any kind of driver. I took out the card from the computer it ran on originally, it crapped out during gaming I think.

The computer is having issues booting even with another graphics card, I don't have another AM3+ motherboard lying around to test, maybe the mobo is damaged somewhat too. EDIT: Nevermind, seemed to boot fine after removing external USB 3.0 drive.

Can I try anything to get it back? Or I can just shove it in the oven and hope for the best?

I was hoping there was something else I could try. Google doesn't turn up any results so far that help me out.

I hate hardware dying on me even if it's old.

Most threads I can find simply end at discussing different driver re-installs and the same-ish looking GPU-Z picture.

Sucks to wake up on Friday to find out your s*** is wrecked.

Well since you said you have problems even with another GPU , I'd test the other motherboard just to be sure.

I edited the first post, it ran fine after unplugging some un-necessaries. Then again I still have 2 more PCI-E ports to test.

My main rig does the same thing with the 760, driver install = crash. I donored a GTX 460 to the FX rig seems to work OK. It's just the GTX 760 doing nothing.

In the mean-time I will take apart the card and look for anything suspicious. Maybe the solder did break up or something, but then would I get a display output if the GPU isn't making good electrical contact.

Thing is , if the card wouldn't boot at all , that's when I'll try and bake it. There's a chance baking it might not do anything , but it's worth a try.

Looked at the naked card, no PCB damage. I'm guessing the card is pushing up daisies in heaven. I wonder what kind of solder the components use, there's a marking, lead with a crossed out circle.

I want to blow out the dust with high pressure air in between the solder balls, but I doubt that has proven to be helpful. More likely do to more damage.

EDIT: Today I baked the card @ 200C for about 8 minutes, the blue caps on the right look slightly bulged compared to purple ones... Waiting for the card to chill a little before testing it. Ohhh I hope it works on the first try. I wasn't sure the solder quite melted enough, the card did have a lead-free sign on it, which means I had to bake at a higher temp. But maybe it was enough.

In my experience baking was almost never successful, I tried it on a PS2 motherboard and it lost display output completely, instead of artifacting like it did before.

Now maybe I did more damage than good, but the card was dead in the water anyway.

Just leave that sucker to chill until it gets to room temp on its own. I baked a ps3 board about a month ago after it started freezing up and artifacting even during the boot-up and it works like new. Hope it works out for you in the end so fingers crossed.

NOPE! I put it back in the PC quickly to test it naked, it still shows up as a Microsoft adapter instead of a 760. I'll go for a second bake @ 210C, my gut tells me 200C just wasn't enough, but inside the oven there was smell of flux and solder for a minute before I stopped baking.

It feels like me trying to resuscitate a person, while breaking their ribcage doing the heart massage. Granted, I haven't done so ever. And I hope I won't have to.

Maybe the slightly bulged blue caps have something to do with not being able to detect the card properly and run at it's designed clock speeds.

I have a P4 mobo which didn't boot simply because it had busted caps on it, but I didn't bother replacing them, forgot about the board, then I took it out years later, tested it. And now it doesn't even get to the BIOS anymore but it did function somewhat before taking a dive. Could it be that it's simply the caps gone wrong that's preventing the card from fully functioning. I can get into windows with it easily, it simply can't be detected properly and a driver install restarts the PC instantly while failing to apply the driver.

I haven't practiced my soldering skills for a while, and all I got is the thingy that plugs straight into the mains, which can't have it's temps changed. It hasn't given any problems replacing caps or USB ports though.

EDIT: Done with the second bake, the plastic that was once white turned yellow. Maybe something happened this time with the slight bump in temperature. I don't have high hopes though, how long before the capacitors just can't take it, I didn't bother covering them, I'm afraid of the foil making contact near the soldering joints. The oven doesn't have granular markings to indicate other temperature settings, so I have to go by eyesight to set the temp.

If it doesn't work do you reckon I should go for a third bake @ 215C and torture the bastard a little more? lol

Damn that Gigabyte board didn't even warp at all. I see burned flux around some joints. Maybe it separated during the process, sorry I dont know too much about soldering, just enough to make it "just work".

If all else fails I'll just use Windforce cooler on another card at some point.
EDIT2: Added some pictures after second bake. Going to put it in the rig, fingers crossed.

Edit3: It survived the second bake with no difference at all. I am convinced it's those blue capacitors that are messing with the card detection.

An acquaintance told be the power delivery is fine, the bulging simply lower the max capacitance of the caps. He says it's more likely the transistors inside the chip have gone. And then again the replacement caps from nichicon cost almost 2 euro a pop at a local radio store, so he said it's not worth the investment.

He also told me baking the pcb doesn't help at all and thinks it's an urban myth. Sooooo...

Edit4:
I'm sad now, why you gotta crush my hopes. What he said might be true though, I don't have the equipment to really test the card throughout, so I won't get anywhere. I feel like a family member has died. I guess I just have to accept it.

It's worse that I can't get a decent card for modded 1080p for a decent price with the you-know-what is going on. I'm getting the feeling that someone was baking their cards at the same time that I was. I don't know why.

A little history about this card, I bought it used a almost a year ago, it was housed in a Corsair AIR 240 and was used for gaming by the previous person. When I bought it, I replaced the TIM and it was good to go, was able to play DOOM on medium settings. The receipt is from 3 years ago. No idea when the card was manufactured though. With no account for inflation the 2GB model costed 220 euros back in 2014 even though it was released a year earlier. Prices in my country stick for a good year even if a new gen is launched.

That's a bummer. Reminds me of the time my HD 4890 died, baking it did nothing so I had to "game" on the Intel HD graphics from my old pentium g620 before I got the 560 Ti (which had also been baked about a year ago). At least now you have the excuse to get a new toy.

There is more than 1 reason to get a new toy.

1) I haven't gamed properly for 9 months. I feel like withdrawal is setting in.
2) My cards can't even play my favorite modded games with at least 60 FPS stable.
3) I got a Freesync monitor recently and I can't even test it because of mid-range prices going up and Radeons being the worst in that category.
4) VEGA is a mess. I wanted the 56, but now.... I WAITED A YEAR FOR THIS!? It will be 6-12 months before anything good comes out. And the 1080 even though is very good value right now, has no proper DX12 hardware support. And the used market for me is a desert for the lack of better term.

You know? First world problems. I just want to sleep and not wake up lmao. I'll just go look at some memes and hope it will make me feel any better.

Too bad. I was hoping for a happy ending to this thread. 2/10 IGN.
