Alright so my friend has finally decided to move to desktop gaming as his laptop runs hot and loud with very odd occasions where games just refuse to launch for whatever reason. I told him I have some parts i could pass his way as I owe him one. I was gonna give a i5 2500 and compatible motherboard and a GTX 750ti. So my worry is that i may give him this 750ti and it may not be as good as his 965m 2gb. The very few benchmarks i could find say the 965m is faster. Any input would help greatly should he stick with his laptop and wait to maybe get a used 770 sense they go for pretty cheap or will the 750ti give better performance than the 965m.

No offense but you saying that holds little to no weight as all you spat out was a number. I'm fully capable of seeing synthetic benchmarks I'm talking real world usage ie gaming, video playback

A GTX 965M is essentially and underclocked GTX 960 (desktop), so it would be faster than a GTX 750Ti provided it isn't throttling (you mention hot & loud).

Realistically, an OC'd 750Ti would be slower, though not by much. I'd recommend going for a GTX 770.

GTX 965M is faster. GTX 750 Ti is slightly more powerful than 960M. In real world the differences between these two will be marginal but still in 965M's favor.

If the GTX 750ti had more than 2GB of vram then it will feel like it is smother than the 965m at 2GB vram....if they are the same in vram then the above people have already covered it.

EDIT what laptop does he have? We may be able to help get the issues with that straightened out????

I would skip the side(down) grade myself

EDIT 2 1) MSI GTX 970 4 GB $190 Shipped, great condition, https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/...ero-lga1150-sony-rx100-20-2-mp-camera.235516/

I don't think switching a previous-gen $900+ laptop to a 3-4 generations old platform is a good idea.
Have you considered just doing a regular maintenance, like simple cleaning, TIM replacement, cooling system check and fresh Windows install?

GTX965m is a decent GPU, so there is really nothing affordable in the desktop field that will replace it. At least nothing cheaper than GTX1050Ti.
If he really wants a desktop, and you want to achieve better performance than his laptop - get a used GTX970 or a new GTX1060(even 3GB version).
In any case, if I were you or him, I'd still do maintenance on that laptop and sell it in favor of mid-range Ryzen system (at least R5 1500X + GTX1060 or something like that).

Yes weve tried a fresh windows install, and installing fresh drivers, and unfortunately the laptop is closed with little to no way into the parts. I'm not sure of the model.
unfortunately we just don't have the kinda budget to throw $190 towards a gpu as we still need ram and a case. The reason 750ti was a choice was just cuz I have it sitting around doing nothing. I can find 770's for less than $100 in my area.

750Ti = 965M its basically the same thing performance wise.

clean the damn laptop reapply paste use a notebook cooler and be done with it.

Total cost $30

Gaming performance = pretty much the same as building a system with a 750Ti

Whats the ASUS model?

I think you miss the point I'm trying to make, he wants to move to desktop for the ability to upgrade the 750ti is by no means permanent. And the laptop is clean in every way and a laptop cooler does no good if he is not gaming on a desk.

Yet use an old stock i5 2500 on an aging platform with no upward mobility. So build a cheap system to then rebuild it entirely later.

2500 isnt a bad chip. But it is definitely showing its age. a $65 G4560 runs neck and neck with it.

I am not saying not do a build but in this case makes more sense to just save up and do it right. Clean the laptop get it serviceable.

If you posted the model could probably find a teardown guide for it. Remove a few screws pop a couple plastic tabs usually the entire bottom comes off in one go.

I've taken apart the laptop before, it's killed 2 hard drives that I had to replace. It killed a 1tb Toshiba and a 1tb Seagate that was brand new. So it's sitting on a 240gb hard drive that o expect to die within the next month or so
And I did not start the thread to lectured about something I've repeated multiple time the laptop is clean I just did all the maintenance on it. The I-5 2500 is FREE along with everything else except ram and a case and maybe a new gpu.
I am merely looking for advice which I seem to understand is they are equal in performance.

Then clean it and repaste it for the short term. Something like Noctua NT-H1 being non conductive means you can just glop it on hope for the best. With a 965M my guess is via age the shit default TIM is likely dried out causing temps to go up. (most typical units run hot anyway shit TIM just makes it worse)

As for a system yeah did some double checks. A 2500 + 750 Ti is basically the same as a G4560 + RX 460 today.

Okay then to answer the question get a 770 used . But the 965M sill still probably be a bit faster......the biggest thing I can say is buy anything that has at least 4GB Vram and no less if that is not possible please stick with the laptop 965m until you can afford at least a 4GB GPU.

EDIT..MY BAD, THE 770 IS BETTER THAN THE 965m http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-965M-vs-GeForce-GTX-770

Honestly I would just grab a cheapo 1050Ti would be a better option. Used version can be found around $120-130 offers nearly double the performance vs the 750Ti and in general is faster than the 965m by about 20% add in overclocking and you can gain an extra 5-8% pushing that boost to around a 30% improvement.

Honestly a GTX 1060 6gb would be the sweet spot for gaming at 1080p But due to mining prices fucking everything up thats likely not doable.

Also just for shits and giggles:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7xps4C

4c/8t
8GB DDR4
275gb SSD
1TB HDD
500w PSU

$500

Needs OS and GPU. Grab OS off Reddit Microsoft Software swap for $35 get a used gpu sub $700 for a a 1080p system that can max majority of games.
