Greetings!

At the beginning of this year i've tested my previous video card Gigabyte GTX980 G1 Gaming 4 GB vs my current video card Gigabyte GTX780 Ti GHz Edition 3 GB:
https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/...dition-vs-gtx980-g1-gaming-benchmarks.218830/

I now had the chance to test a new Gigabyte GeForce GTX1060 Windforce OC 3 GB video card. My friend brought his Gigabyte GeForce GTX970 G1 Gaming 4 GB video card.

So what was a high-end benchmark at the start of this year, now turns out into a mid-range benchmark, since GTX1060 is a mid-range product that competes (depending on model) very well against NVIDIA's own previous generation high-end video cards like GTX780 Ti, GTX970 and GTX980.

Like always given the credit to techpowerup, we find MSI GeForce GTX1060 Gaming X 3 GB reviewed a month ago - suffice to say that this Gigabyte version has a 13 MHz higher base core clock than the MSI one, which means they are equal in performance, so you can easy compare the performance of GTX780 Ti GHz and GTX970 G1 in that techpowerup benchmark against the given cards, since techpowerup (like most of the reviewers) include only stock versions of previous edition video cards, but so little people in reality have stock video cards...

All the benchmarks were made on 1920X1200 resolution with custom AA settings in each game to stretch the cards to the limit. I now have a Dell 27 inch 2560x1440 144 Hz G-SYNC monitor, and even though the video cards are pretty able to play all of my benchmarked games at 2560x1440 resolution without AA at maximum settings pretty decently, these cards in reality are still 1080P cards if you tune up the settings to the very max and set AA in all the games to point of making them "sweat". The purpose of this benchmark is also to find out are 3 GB of RAM enough for 1920x1080 (1920x1200).

The benchmark rig is

Intel Core i7 5775C 4000 MHz OC all cores
MSI Z97 Gaming 3
Crucial 16 DDR3 1600 MHz CL8 in dual channel config.
Samsung Evo 850 250 GB sata3 Windows drive.
WD SE 2 Tb sata3 game drive

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
NVIDIA Forceware 373.06 (GeForce Experience 3.0)

VIDEO PRESENTATION

test screen 2016.10.11.jpg

Since my previous benchmark i've excluded many older games, and kept only games those really push the video cards at 1920x1200 with maximum settings below 100 FPS.

Arma 3 Apex Edition
(settings maximum, ultra, on, 8X FSAA, PPAA disabled, HBAO+)

If you look back at the benchmarks at the beginning of the year, something astounding happened - the GTX780 Ti GHz frame rates went up from max 43 to max 88 even with heavier AA this time. This must be either a driver improvement or the fact that Arma 3 is an "Apex Edition" instead of whatever i used before... GTX1060 OC is slightly faster than GTX970 G1.

Batman Arkham Origins
(settings maximum, ultra, on, 8X MSAA, AO DX11 E.)

Seeing how GTX780 Ti GHz pulled ahead of GTX980 G1 last time in this benchmark, it's no surprise that GTX1060 OC and GTX970 G1 are left way behind.. Still though, GTX1060 OC is slightly faster than GTX970 G1 here too.

Battlefield Hardline (settings maximum, ultra, on, 4X MSAA, HBAO)

It appears that GTX1060 OC and GTX970 G1 are incredibly tied o far...

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare
(settings maximum, ultra, on, 4X SSAA, HBAO+)

And now it's the GTX970 G1 that pulls ahead of GTX1060 OC, but not by much.

Company of Heroes 2 (settings maximum, ultra, on, AA HIGH, AO N.A.)

An in-game build benchmark tool was used for this - it is stable and reliable. All cards seem to be roughly equal in average performance.

Crysis 3
(settings maximum, ultra, on, 4X SMAA, AO N.A.)

It's a tie between GTX1060 OC and GTX970 G1.

Dragon Age Inquisition
(settings maximum, ultra, on, 4X MSAA, AO FULL)

Again, the GTX1060 OC has a slight lead over GTX970 G1.

Far Cry 4 (settings maximum, ultra, on, 4X MSAA, HBAO T)

Here the lead is a bit bigger for GTX1060 OC over GTX970 G1.

Metro Last Light Redux (settings maximum, ultra, on, 2X SSAA, AO N.A.)

A tie between GTX1060 OC and GTX970 G1.

Rainbow Six Siege
(settings maximum, ultra, on, 4X MSAA, HBAO+)

Medium FPS are tied between GTX1060 OC and GTX970 G1.

Rise of the Tomb Raider
(settings maximum, ultra, on, FXAA, HBAO+)

This is the case is where GTX970 G1 notably, but not drastically pulls ahead of GTX1060 OC.

Watch Dogs
(settings maximum, ultra, on, 4X MSAA, HBAO+ HIGH)

And now the other way around - a notable GTX1060 OC lead over GTX970 G1.

Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
(settings maximum, ultra, on, NVIDIA HW OFF, AA ON, HBAO+)

And finally the only game, in which GTX1060 OC and GTX970 G1 both managed to tie a GTX780 Ti GHz.

-------------------------------------------------------------

CONCLUSIONS

PERFORMANCE SUMMARY.jpg

Calculating the average frame rates of medium results in all of 13 games, we come out with the conclusion that GTX1060 Windforce OC 3 GB is identical in to GTX970 G1 Gaming 3 GB in performance, while GTX780 Ti GHz Edition is about 9 - 10 % faster than both. Keep in mind though, that both GTX780 Ti GHz and GTX970 G1 are heavily overclocked: 153 MHz on GTX970 G1 and 210 MHz on GTX780 Ti GHz, while GTX1060 OC bares a relatively humble 76 MHz overclock.

Thanks for that but it would be even better if you uploaded the full 1920x1200 jpg pics just in the post itself by using the button "Upload a File". :)

Odd CPU you got there....

What i think is the factor that impacts and gives the 780ti the lead is MSAA being on. That is known to be very intensive to memory bandwidth and don't think most using a 1060 would consider using MSAA very offen in mostly any game. With it off I would bet it would even out performance like it was in witcher 3

I thought the 1060 was supposed to be faster than a 970...interesting.

Yes, my baby is aging very, very well.

Nice roundup of benchmarks and cards! Thanks for this. About the MSAA and perf difference - it does show that delta compression really isn't a cure-all and mem bandwidth matters. It also shows how similar Pascal is to Maxwell in that regard.

Big thanks, supports my decision NOT to upgrade this year and wait for better GPUs + especially prices. To all: note this is 1060 **3GB** so it has not the full chip enabled. The real 1060 is probably somewhere around 780 Ti perf, or slightly short of 980 perf.

Also his CPU is very nice, one of the best *gaming* CPUs by far because the L4 Cache which the other Intel CPUs lack is really good in games.
See here and get shocked by the awesome performance of it:
http://www.pcgameshardware.de/CPU-Hardware-154106/Tests/Rangliste-Bestenliste-1143392/

Too bad it was too expensive and is discontinued now. Hopefully we get another Intel CPU with L4 cache soon (maybe Kaby Lake), it's damn nice.

The L4 doesn't seem to show its advantage if you sort on just gaming benchmarks on your link. That roundup consists also of CPU-only and non gaming tasks so they distort the image.

Yes, i5 5775c is a special CPU, but when coupled with dedicated GPU, all that matters is clocks, if you look further into it.

Yeah but it has more shaders than the 3GB version, so it's faster even when the 3GB's VRAM isn't the bottleneck.

In synthetics maybe...in real world 1080... it would be impossible to tell ;)

Well, if I haven't got my 780Ti cheap, I'd probably had a 1060, and IMO the price/performance is better in the 3GB model (at least here in Finland) :)

Bullshit I just activated only gaming in the link so other apps aren't calculated. IT IS one of the best gaming cpus indeed.

Damn that 1060 doesnt support SLI, it would be cool to see 780Ti SLI vs 1060 SLI. Well, I'm thinking about another 780Ti... :)

This is why my next GPU will probably be a used 980Ti, there is so little real performance advantage to the new gen cards from either camp, and AMD doesn't seem to be able to push their performance up in the games I play with current or last gen cards.

I'm going for a 780Ti SLI since I'm rolling on with 1080p :D

The heck are you talking about? GeForce GTX1060, in my opinion, is the best sweet spot mid-range card ever. It's twice faster than GeForce GTX960, which it replaces. That kind of performance boost has not been seen since GeForce 9600GT release!!!

And if you will buy GeForce GTX980 Ti, have i mind that it will be hard to find one with proper warranty and that even the best overclocked one will be only as good as a stock GeForce GTX1070.

There is a 980Ti for sale with a waterblock here now for less than 100 more than a 480, and all the 980Ti's over clock hugely. Warranty......

I was about to post additional 2560X1440 resolution benchmarks of MSI GF GTX970 Gaming 4 GB vs Gigabyte GF GTX780 Ti GHz Edition 3 GB vs Gigabyte GF GTX1060 Windforce 3 GB, but since several of my Asus Z97 motherboards went to RMA centers from November till January, and in the end i ended up with a Gigabyte Z97, on which i had to do a totally new Windows 7 install, i could not test the Gigabyte GF GTX1060 Windforce 3 GB anymore, because of the changed conditions. However, not wanting to trash my MSI GF GTX970 Gaming 4 GB vs Gigabyte GF GTX780 Ti GHz Edition 3 GB 2560X1440 resolution tests, i have decided to post them here.

2560X1440 resolution, no AA, all settings max/ultra

I added 3 new games: Alien Isolation, Doom, Dying Light. Drivers used were 372.90

It's interesting to notice how in Doom, MSI GF GTX970 Gaming 4 GB actually pulls ahead of Gigabyte GTX780 Ti GHz Edition 3 GB no mater if it is Vulkan or OpenGL API, although clearly GTX780 Ti GHz is superior generally.

I don't have any of these cards anymore. Next benchmarks will probably contain Asus GF GTX980 Ti Strix 6 GB vs whatever GF GTX1070 vs something else on 2560X1440 resolution.

Yeah I suspect the 780ti not being properly optimised there in drivers or game side causing the anomality.
